Is the guy from Katatonia alive?

^ Yes - incredibly exciting - even the not so well known vocalists have great voices. I think some of the sound bites from each vocalist are still available on the main
Ayreon home page.

As far as I know - Jonas P Renske from Katatonia is still with us!!!!

One of the main reasons I'm looking forward to it is because of the guy from Evergrey.  I love his vocals.  Him and Daniel Gildenlow should be awesome!

I've heard Evergrey onlt once and they didn't catch my hear. Seemed to be your usual boring and rather pointless prog-metal band, and Englund didn't shine as something special at all, but I think that his sample of the new Ayreon album is great! Caught me in a second.

The line-up is very impressive. My anticipations for this release are very high.

Englund and Renske. Two great vocalists from two really great bands. Should be an album well worth waiting for.

I'm excited, Simone is a great singer from a terrible band.  I went to the Kamelot show where Epica opened for Kamelot and they didn't do so hot, Simone's the only good quality with the band.

And Evergrey's and Katonia's singer will be quite interesting.  I find that interesting that Arjen is using the guy to growl, I remember hearing a little bit of it from his first album (I think that's the album he growled on), I like the newer less harsher vocals but all is well.

Didn't really know much of the others, heard of them but haven't heard them.  Blind Guardian should be cool, and from the few samples I did hear this'll be exciting.  A lot of vocalists, but knowing Arjen, we're in good hands.

Looking at a lot of these artists and guest musicians I'm not sure this is going to be quite as good (for my tastes at least) as The Human Equation. That said I'm optimistic that Arjen will put out an album as strong as Into the Electric Castle or The Universal Migrator. I'm sure I won't be disappointed. Can't wait.

I've been listening to "Planet Y" now for a couple of days. It's incredible.

The only other Ayreon album I actually own is Into the Electric Castle. I found the story a bit hokey and pretentious in many places (and just pure fun in others) but liked the musical quality of it the best. I've given a listen or two to everything since The Final Experiment but none of the others really clicked for me. Human Equation in particular didn't do anything for me (in the emotional or story sense) even though it was musically excellent. I have a vague understanding of the overall story.

I gave this one a try because I liked the talent I was hearing, and man I was just not ready for what I got when I put those headphones on. This album tells the story of "Planet Y" (Forever's homeworld). It's dark, haunted, murderously melancholy, progressive rock genius all rolled together with a pseudo-industrial sound to set the overall tone of a world fallen into oblivion. Someone needs to send a copy of this to both Trent Reznor and Al Gore - they'll appreciate it for entirely different reasons.

The story this time around is anything BUT corny. The lyrics aren't perfect but never fail to be at least adequate, and some of them are just downright fantastic. This is a far more serious album just oozing science fiction... there isn't a hell of a lot of plot, more like a history lesson of how a race can lose everything while trying to conquer science and acquire knowledge. It isn't the quest of knowledge that is the problem - it's the increasingly unnatural technology used to achieve it. Forever achieves mastery of the entire universe only to find they have no meaning left to drive them.

I won't spoil the story for you, that's just what comes out in the stunning opening track (and there's two CDs left to go!) Fans of the series can doubtless guess what happens next. Frankly I think Age of Shadows was every bit as epic an opener as The Poet & The Pendulum from Nightwish's latest Dark Passion Play.

After hearing this one, the story has my attention enough for me to go out and pick up Ayreon's entire catalog - something Coheed and Cambria hasn't managed to do yet. Consider me a converted Ayreon fan. I haven't enjoyed an album like this in a very long time, reminds me of the first time I actually 'heard' Amarok.

It's going to take me a while to digest this one yet - and I don't want to review it on progarchives until I've got my head firmly around the rest of the catalog. The music has respectful (almost playful) nods to Giorgio Moroder's Metropolis score from the 1980s - Arjen must be a fan. It's taken industrial sound influences from NIN, thrown a dash of Tool in, but put them to work in more active ways weaving around Ayreon's own sound (which is still there, never fear). It is cold as ice and very, very dark, something I didn't feel in the other albums despite the subject matter at times. I'd bet at least once you'll find yourself feeling sorry for Forever and have an entirely new perspective on the events of Into The Electric Castle. I can only wonder if it shines more light on the other albums I'm not more familiar with (yet).

I'm thinking 5/5, betting it'll rate 4.2+. Just brilliant.

That was a freakin' fun ride. I posted my review, and I'd appreciate criticism as I'm kinda new at this. I don't usually review albums unless I have something good to say about them - I figure it's better to let the people who like an artist advocate for them. If I'm into a specific artist's whole catalog I'll usually write both good and bad reviews for their good and bad albums since I figure I've got a better handle on why those are bad, enough to be constructive. I try to review promos that come my way because I think it's important to promote artists before release, especially these days.

I just love the way this new Ayreon album ties all of the other works together. It gave me those precious 'new ears' we all sometimes get when listening to works we've heard before, where you find yourself thinking "how the hell did I miss this the first time?" Anyone who has heard Amarok probably knows what I am talking about ;).

I am way, way out of my depth to review the music on the album. I only know about half of the artists featured (something I plan to correct shortly), and frankly all of the singing sounds so fantastic to me that I'm hard pressed to make any distinctions let alone criticisms. All I can say is that I haven't been this blown away by the music since Spock's Beard's "V" which is one of my most favorite albums.

I find the album to be good+ now after several listens (at first I was a bit disappointed; I have a promotional copy). It grows on me slowly. I think it's a step down from previous albums and has elements taken from both Human Equation and Electric Castle. Liquid Eternity is a catchy good song as is the closing song. Just read his interview on DPRP.  Knew about his split with the wife but hadn't heard about his losing his sense of taste and smell.  How awful that has got to be on top of it.  He just seems like a really down to earth guy who has a lot of talent (with little ego) and is a kid in a candy store doing what he is doing but life has dealt him a few blows recently.  Whether you like the new album or not, you got to give the guy his due.
