Hi there. Sadly, at this moment, I found myself in the bed again, not able to sleep. See more at my insomnia thread if you want to. Anyway, I realised I can't most probably pay my rent. In fact I'm more than 1 month late, and I have no place to move to, seeing as how none of my relatives have oom for me. The rent isn't that much, only 219 euros per month. I started thinking that selling my el. guitar might just be the only possible solution for me at this moment. I was wondering how much can I really ask for it. I mean, it's a Squier stratocaster, a '95 celebration model with humbuckers. The original price was 425 euros when I bought it. Since then I've changed strings which were worth 20e, I've taken care of it like a baby, the fretboard is in better shape than what it was in the shop, I changed the factory springs from under the base to better ones. The top has a tiny crack on it from years back that came at a gig. But I can certainly say it's the best squier and even the best guitar I've ever played. the sustain is remarkable. A red genuine sunburst with a rosewood fretboard etc. I was just wondering, can I really ask for the same 400e for the guitar? I mean, an instrument like this doesn't get old in that way, the original Fenders from 60-70 might cost more than the new ones. In fact, with my mods on it, I think I've added to the value. I know I'd really hate to give it up, that'd only leave me with my nylon Hohner and my flute, but quite frankly as a poor student it's pretty much what I own. I was thinking of selling my computer some time ago, but fate decided otherwise; my HD broke up, my monitor blew up and my keyboard and mouse broke the deal too, so it's worthless crap now, although, it was only 500 when I bought it 4 years ago. Selling my cd collection would prove impossible seeing as no-one listens to progressive rock anymore. Also, I guess, selling my guitar would make it sensible to sell my amp and my effects too. With a lot of luck I might get some 400e together to keep me alive for a month. Uhoh, I never thought it would come to this, but ... sh*t. I guess I could sell it and change to a 25e guitar just to get the practise... Ok, just needed to open up. Usually this helps when trying to figure out stuff, arranges ones thoughts. |

Do some research to see what guitars like that sell for nowadays. Unfortunately, very few guitars (mostly vintage Strats and Les Pauls, I think) gain value over time. Best of luck to you, though.

Sorry to give you bad news my friend but Squier strats have very low value indeed even in mint condition, if you are very lucky and find a buyer you may get 100/125 euros for it, even with humbuckers, but the crack is a problem.
your family should support you in an emergency whatever the reason..... shouldn't they?
 the American Fenders were very well made in the 60's, especially before CBS took over the company - that's why they are so valuable now, also age has its effects on the sound, and the kudos of owning a genuine 60's model, they are worth many thousands of pounds in original condition, especially if the seller claims it was used by Jimi Hendrix!  -------------  Prog Archives Tour Van

| Why don't you pawn it? You wouldn't have to think of a price and you'd get it back when you have money. (Unless you're never going to have money, which means you eventually end up selling everything and living on the street. In that case it doesn't really matter what you ask for the guitar.) |

Oh I do, I teach jazz guitar and composing as free lance, but it doesn't really pay that much without a paper that says I'm a professional. Also, yeah, I did consider pawning it, might be better. well, I'll be deciding tomorrow since I've got some business tomorrow to attend to. Hm, well I was hoping that my guitar was worth a bit more since I know squiers quite well. Mine was an original, kind of special edition, which had better mics and better wood on it, that's why it was over twice as much as a normal one. But I don't see them a lot anymore. Oh well, One thing I know, I'd never change it for a real Fender, as I've never played one genuine that was nearly as good as this one. It's sad that the name multiplies the price :P |

Re : the pawnshop ... one bit of info that they can provide is what price they would sell it for. That would give you a good idea of its' saleable value. In my corner of the world, you're usually going to get half of that price in cash if you sell it to a pawn shop. Of course, if you think you may have some money coming in shortly, you may want to pawn it to get the money you need now, then reclaim it later. But beware, this means you'd be putting even more money into an inexpensive guitar. If you are able to delay selling it at a pawn shop, other options for you to sell it directly are to check local businesses (independants, the majors won't let you usually) to see if you can post a card of sheet of paper advertising the guitar for sale. Some businesses have community bulletin boards just for such needs. If it doesn't sell quick enough, you still have the pawn shop as a backup. oh my amp. yeah, it's worth nothing... anyway, I was lucky enough to get a private loan, so I paid my rent. Now I'm waiting for how it goes with the social security, most hopefully I'll be clear in a few weeks, and ready to start working. Until then, I'll just consentrate on my girl, composing and the coming elections.
also i understood, no matter how big a value they set for my plank, it's not really worth it in this case at least |
