I've heard different opinions over the years on how often you should change a Diamond Stylus before it can start to damage records. 100 hours of playing seems to be the most common opinion although personally I probably go a bit longer than this and my records are in good condition still.

At £75 a go it's pretty expensive but I only play records a fraction of the time I play cd's these days so it's not that often I replace it.

Any thoughts on how often they should be changed?

I wouldn't go much further than the manufacturer recommends; they know more about the styluses (styli?) than you do.

100 hours? Are you sure you don't mean 1000 hours? A brand new cartridge w/ diamond stylus is barely broken in after only 100 hours.

Yes I was underestimating a bit. I've done a bit of hunting around and it seems a Saphire Stylus should be replaced after 100 hours but a Diamond one will last 500 hours.

i have two Audio Technica styli, my dealer claims they should last a few years if they are cleaned regulary and treated carefully, and after 2 years they are still in excellent condition. they can be studied for wear under a microscope, flat sides means wear.

Thanks for that. What should the sides look like under a microscope before wear?

A good quality and well setted stylus lasts much much longer than 1000 hours IMO.
