Texas native Pat Mastelotto is set to tour as the percussionist for legendary Swedish mega-stars The Flower Kings on a November European tour.  Dates unannounced, and it's unknown whether this collaboration will continue onto a US leg.

I meant that a member of King Crimson is joining members of the Flower Kings...  title line didn't give enough room to clarify Ouch

Of course they'll also have a drummer ... TFK sometimes tour with a drummer and one additional percussionist.

I think that Mastelotto is going to be the primary drummer for this leg.  It's been unknown for a while if Zoltan would be able to tour, and while TFK are fairly big, I don't think they're big enough to hire on Mastelotto as additional perscussion, as awesome as that'd be.

Rather, I'm thinking Mastelotto might be one of the few drummers that could do justice to Zoltan's style, drumming over loops to emulate Z's insane and busy polyrhythms.  In the less busy parts, he may also be able to emulate the 'two drummer' sound, similar to the way KC play the double-trio material with the four-piece.

This is true in many, many more ways than one.

As of 16/9 Zoltan is no longer with TFK. His final performance with the band was on Symforce UnhappyCry

I think this might be pretty cool. I've been following Mastelotto since his days with Mr. Mister and playing on Al Jarreau's High Crime CD. The guy is phenomenal.

TFK could certainly use a phenomenal drummer.  Jaime Salazar was great, and Zoltan was a living legend...  Marcus Liliquist, maybe not so much Confused  Mastelotto is a beast, though, and I can see his loop systems helping him cover Zoltan's jazz territory quite nicely Big%20smile

Zoltan played his very final gig with The Flower Kings at the recent Symforce festival last saturday. I sat backstage with Zoltan after the gig and he was really pissed, eyes swollen from crying and all that. He didn't explain yet he knew that this gig was the final one for him with the band. Personally I think it's weird for him to perform on the latest album knowing he will no longer be a part of the band. The recordings were done without Markus Liliequist as he was too much involved with his band Clark. When I phoned Roine about two weeks ago he confirmed that Zoltan would not be part of the band during the tour in november. He told me there woud be a surprise which made me suggest TFK would tour with two drummers hence his smile when I suggested a Phil Collins/Chester Thompson duet :-)

anyway, Zoltan continues to work with Jonas Reingold in Karmakanic whose third album is recorded and awaits a release

A real shame that Zoltan has gone, he's a great player. I'd like to know the reason why he's out the picture.

He was fired before, because (my assumptions) he was missing qeues, played songs in the wrong tempo etc. overall taking a bit too much liberty, which could work well in a jazz(rock)-setting, but not necessarily in TFK. however, I still think he is the best drummer TFK have ever had, and I'm looking forward to the new Karmakanic, as Zoltan is still playing there.

Must admit Jaime Salazar was my favourite but whatever, The Flower Kings need a permanent replacement for Zoltan at least as good. IMO Marcus Lilliquist whilst adequate didn't have the spark to his playing that TFK's need.

I was one of the lucky guys that managed to go to Symforce and see his last performance with The Flower Kings, though i dont understand why he's leaving, his last performance was incredible and he really showed that he wanted to do his best for his last day with The Flower Kings. Its a shame, but Mastelloto is a great drummer as well, so no biggy.

Could this mean that Zoltan was kept in the dark a bit about his future in the band?

Part of me wonders how positive it would be if he had never played with King Crimson, but (instead) they announce that former Mr. Mister drummer Mastelotto was joining them on tour.

I was a fan of Mr. Mister back in the 80's and have always thought he was a great drummer (Just listen to Go On...).
