Hi Titan. Welcome! I like all those openers a lot. After some consideration I chose 'Eleventh Earl of Mar' Its by no means my favourite song out of that lot, I just love that very unusual chord that Tony Banks opens with, and the way the intro progresses dramatically into the first verse. Genesis were masters of atmosphere and this is one of their finest examples IMO. 'Dancing with the Moonlit Knight' and 'Dance on a volcano' are actually my two favoutie songs out of your selection. ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |

Has to be "Watcher of the skies". They opened with it the first time I saw them live at the Apollo in Glasgow (Greens Playhouse Fragile! |
) , and it sent shivers up my spine. The symphonic melotron is so majestic, it was like an entire orchestra was on the stage.Posted By: Chris Stainton

Foxtrot is my all time favorite album and I love every single track. I voted for Moonlit Knight by mistake though. Damn! I've gone for Watcher because of the fabulous keyboard opening. It has to be said that all the songs are great openers though they all catch your attention right away. |

Genesis were rather good at openers.. I chose Looking for Someone. Just can't beat that Peter Gabriel and his vocals, and the vulnerability in his voice just gives it the edge over Dancing With The Moonlit Knight.

Hi Everybody If is there a band that made wonderful "Overtures Albuns Songs", this band was Genesis. All of them are Spetaculars (as a fine overture has to be). I could choose "Musical Box", Watcher of The Skies" or "Dancing with The Moonlit Knight" from the classic albuns. Even the Bombastic "Dance on a Volcano". But my choice is "Looking for Someone. What is the Peter voice when the song begins ??? Something weird, dramatic and sweet at the same time. It will be a mark for all songs of PG era... Best Greetings... |

The answer is obvious, Dancing with the moonlit knight... also probably the best song to introduce to people who dont know Genesis yet. An opener needs to be more than a good song, it needs to be representative to the band's style too. So my vote goes to Dancing, but Wathcer is just as good. The Musical Box is even better, but Wathcer and Musical Box aren't very good as openers in my opinion. -------------

The only thud of Genesis entire career as far as album openers goes is "Invisible Touch", but that5's for another thread....

Those are all great songs, and they'd make a great compilation album too! It's hard to vote for any particular song, since on any given day, one might stand out more than the rest. That's the great thing about prog. music; different songs will be more interesting or enjoyable depending on time of day, weather, personal mood, location, etc.

Man, all are friggin good (lamb lies down to a lesser extent and
I haven't got Trespass yet). I might vote for Eleventh Earl of Mar for a change, because of its energy, I always get really into it when I listen to W&W. The rest of the album after One for the Vine smehow always falls short for me. Dancing With the Moonlit Knight. This intro still gives me chills, and because it was one of the few songs that got me into prog I can still remember when I hated it! It took me a while to 'get' early genesis but wow it was worth it

I think Eleventh Earl is really underrated. People don't talk much about it and I can't understand why. It's one of the best performances of Collins career and has that great Hackettesque instrumental interlude in the middle. I never get tired of listening to it. It's a great opener! I think its the best (Dance on a Volcano would be my second choice). Someone should start a thread for best Genesis closer.
