So, unfortunatly I had to cut some out, as Woody made more than 25 movies

My vote... the obvious one, Annie Hall... but I really like Melinda & Melinda, Love and Death and Bananas as well... actually, i like them all!Big%20smile

Oh this is torture!!!!!   I love them all but voted Stardust Memories.  Husbands and Wives is another sleeper classic not to miss.  Deconstructing Harry is the best 90s one and the last great one.  All the 70s ones are awesome.  Crimes and Misdemeanors is very good.

I'm not a huge Woody Allen fan, I find him rather annoying. But I found Zelig very fresh and delightful.

I loved Radio Days, but I think his stand-up was better than any of his movies

Take the Money and Run ... closely followed by Love and Death and Sleeper.

IMO the key situation that summarises what Woody Allen is about is in Take the Money and Run when he gets all dressed up and wants to leave the house and realizes he forgot to put on trousers - then sad piano music starts and he gets depressed.

How has Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Sex... not received any votes? My goodness, that movie is hilarious! That final one where they show you what happens inside the human body during love making just cracks me up. Woody as the anxiety filled sperm is pure genius. "I'm not getting shot out of that thing!! I've heard stories about guys ramming head first into a wall a rubber! Or, what if he's mastur****ng??!! I could end up on the ceiling!!!"

it's good, but tbh, its too patchy and inconsistent... even Woody admitted that himself.  Of his funnier, early movies, you really should try Take The Money & Run (imho, the first 5 minutes are just about the funniest thing ever committed to celluloid), Bananas, Play It Again Sam, Sleeper or Love & Death.... frankly, all of them have gag after gag, intelligently paced thru the movies... superb...Clap

btw, if anyone's interested in the movies missing from the above list, they are:

What's Up Tiger Lily?
Bananas
Play It Again, Sam...
The Front
Broadway Danny Rose
Oedipus Wrecks
Alice
Shadows & Fog
Bullets Over Broadway
Mighty Aphrodite
Deconstructing Harry
Small Time Crooks
Hollywood Ending

Off the top of my head, I think that's the lot....Embarrassed

Wouldn't quite put it that way, but yes, his stand-up comedy is pure histrionic bliss. This gem is mandatory for any Woody fan:

my favourite Woody Allen film is  "Play it Again Sam" (not on the list Confused). Absolutely hysterical comedy ! Woody has the mark of the great comedian - he never laughs at his own jokes - he never laughs! LOL

Oh so hard to decide! Shadows and Fog I think is his best made film.  Its brilliant, but doesn't appear on the list so I'm sad.  Manhattan was great, Anything Else was actually pretty funny and Jason Biggs did a great Woody impersonation.

Stardust Memories was also very good, and Sleeper had good physical comedy.  I didn't care for Match Point, but thought Scoop was great.

Zelig was great and Melinda and Melinda was very interesting.  Manhattan Murder Mystery was very funny.  Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex.... was interesting, but didn't really grab me.

Celebrity seemed more dramatic than funny. Kenneth Brannaugh was good in it though.  Bananas was weak I think, Annie Hall was really good the first time I saw it, but I didn't care for it as much the other times I've watched it.  Hannah and Her Sisters was also a top notch effort.

I found Small Time Crooks to be awful, Hollywood Ending was entertaining as was Deconstructing Harry.   I guess since Shadows and Fog isn't on the poll I'll go with Zelig.

I'm trying to have a complete picture of Woody Allen, until now it's like this:

Love and Hate: 7/10 (very good). I haven't laughed that good since I can't remember when.
Annie Hall: 10/10 (masterpiece). Woody Allen at his best.
Interiors: 9/10 (exceptional). And yes it's a tribute to Bergman, but just as good as the "originals".
Manhattan: 8/10 (excellent). It does disappoint somehow though, especially seeing it after Annie Hall
Zelig: 9/10. Not that entertaining movie, but more interesting from a "technical" perspective.
The Purple Rose of Cairo: 8/10. A charming little film.
Hannah and Her Sisters: 10/10. Stupendous.
Match Point: 10/10. How can one have such a varied and consistent work?

I was just comenting today with a fellow Allen fan friend how Match Point is my least favorite Allen movie, and he agreed...  I find Scoop better and more entertaining... well, maybe its cause of the lack of comedy that I love in all of Allen movies...

Indeed Match Point is from a totally different world than most of Allen's work, but it's incredibly good at what it does. It doesn't need to be a "Woody Allen" for me to like it. and I like it, because I like all those English themes & motifs. Actually when I saw it I had just finished reading two of Galsworthy's sagas, and it fitted perfectly. I like an artist to be versatile and to be able to adapt successfully to another world of culture and forms.

My personal favorite remains Crimes and Misdemeanors, but Radio Days, Zelig, and Hannah are close behind.  Amazing storyteller... I didn't much like Purple Rose or Jade Scorpion...  and Shadows and Fog though unique, is forgettable.

It's burnt on my brain, shadows and fog... Spyro's scene "I don't wanna be sniffed!..." incredible joke...

Purple rose is a great film, but the end... I dont like it that much. Sure, its not the "and they lived happily ever after" end, but it kinda bumbed me out a bit

I personally decided that I didn't "get" Woody Allen or his sense of humor a long time ago.  Granted I was a teen at the time and the humor may have gone over my head.

The one movie in particular that I am thinking of had a scene where I believe he might have been on a job interview or a sales call and the office lobby that he had to wait in was freshly waxed so he kept falling down while he was trying to go sit on a couch.  The couch turned out to be a leather couch so once he got to the couch he couldn't stay seated on the couch because he kept sliding off of the couch.  Then after what seemed like an hour he tried opening a bag of M & M's which amazingly tore open and sent M & M's flying across the floor.  In theory, kind of funny, but while I was watching it, it was one of the most boring and stupid movie scenes that I had ever seen.

I'm pretty certain that was a Woody Allen movie.  The name however, I don't recall.

I agree, Crimes and Misdemeanors is a great film, one of the best. Woody made great films before that one, but with Crimes he solidified his stature as one of the great film artists, IMHO.

Yes, and wha't interesting is that he revisited the same theme in "Match Point." Another Woody masterpiece.
