Being an naturally curious person, I am wondering how people first found the Prog Archives. This is my story.
Some years ago I was in a tapas bar the converted Railway Station in Winsor (just by the castle where the Queen of England lives). Normally the La Tosca chain of tapas bars play fairly standard flamenco and Spanish pop music (very loudly) while you eat your frittatas and paella - but this one was playing some really cool Spanish progressive rock. We stayed there quite some time, drinking wine and listening to the fine music, but eventually decided that there were other things we should be doing, so had to go. As I was paying I asked who the band was. "Triana!" all the staff said in unison, while glaring at me as if I was foolish in not knowing. I left quickly, repeating the name over and over in my head so I would not forget it.
When I got home, I searched Amazon and all the other usual places for this band and found nothing, then I googled it and found the Progressive Archives. I've been lurking here ever since.  ------------- What? |

A friend at work wanted some information on Grobschnitt. So I searched for him, found nothing much. And then he suggested to go to a site with prog music. He could not remember the name, said it was something with "archives". Found this place and I'm still here. |

More than a couple of years ago I was googleing the names of various rock DVDs because I was going to buy 5 DVDs from a site and I could not make up my mind. Some of the bands were Pink Floyd, ELP, Jethro Tull and YES, so this nice looking purple site with reviews kept showing up. There were a lot of useful facts mentioned, like sound quality and how inspired were the performances, but at the beginning I was struck by the difference, often opposition, between one reviewer's opinion and the next's. However, by the time I finalized my documentation and ordered the DVDs, I was already able to get a clear overall picture of what the reviewed item was supposed to contain. And after some time, I noticed the site had a forum. ------------- "PA's own GI Joe!"

It must have been early/mid 2004 after I had a discussion with a friend about the Mellotron. I had just got access to the internet and searched on Mellotron. After a few hits on sites I came across the Ultimate Mellotron site. The site had a number of links to other sites including PA. The rest is history as they say.
The timing was spot on though. It was about then that I had a bit more finance to follow my musical taste and had just about finished replacing my old vinyls with CDs. I got a few leads and influences from the Mellotron site - Spock's Beard, Anglagard, Arena for instance. Then mid 2004 I started taking PA seriously before joining in early 2005. I think there was less than 9,000 albums from about 1,500 bands at the time - could have been lower.
Anyway several hundred albums and a hell of a lot of listening pleasure later; here I am.

I have to say that I like the guy's style of writing and my appreciation for his site is very high and I will always be grateful for his work. I was dead impressed that he had Seventh Wave listed, despite low Mellotron input.

met Ivan on another site and he recommended it to me.. I registered under a name... posted once then left.... came back some months later under another name.. posted a few times.... left again. I visited the archives for about a year and strictly used PA as a resource.Then I sustained some really nasty chemical burns on my legs from hydroflouric acid at work and was laid up for quite awhile and after reading everything in the house I got bored and my daughter said..."You should check out the forum of that prog site you like so much".
I followed her advice,registered as TheProgtologist and got instantly hooked. -------------  |

I hardly remember now, it was over 2 years ago... I've seen this site a couple times very ling ago(03-04?) but never really went nowhere further than the band/album page I came across... then later in 05 when I had a bigger interest in prog(before it was mostly classic rock and heavy metal a la Maiden, Manowar, Metallica) and the first "real" visit was when the PA page for 6DOIT came up in a search. So I started frequenting the site to check out reviews and stuff, then noticed the forums(back then actively trolled by Reed and Karny  ) it seemed like a great place so I joined a couple months after the first visit. My first post was the opening of a thread about how much Green Day sucks(later turned into an ulk-fest ). I googled Porn Archives during a midnight session but because of one of my infamous typing errors I stumbled upon Prog Archives ...
OK but now seriously: early 2004 I had just stopped working for a Dutch progrock magazine after at about five years and was searching for a new challenge. I googled 'progrock' and so I discovered Prog Archives. I got in touch with Proglucky and mailto:M@X - M@X , I proposed to write some biographies and reviews and the rest is history, it's almost 3,5 years ago, time is running fast!

Found this site after searching for some KC reviews etc. That was in early/mid 04, and used this site as a new prog resource for about one year. I also wrote a few reviews back then, fairly low quality ones though. When I felt that my english was good enough, I joined the forums as well and started making friends and discovering even more new music. That was over two years ago, and I still think this site is the best prog site around ------------- RIO/AVANT/ZEUHL - The best thing you can get with yer pants on! |

Well, I copied four albums of VDGG from a friend and was looking for some info about them. And I came across this site and really liked it. After some time I discovered the forum and started to frequently read it but was too shy to join it. Finally I signed to the forum but still couldn't make myself to post. One day I decided I have to break this shyness. I was looking for some info about DT's newest album at that time (Octavarium) and I stumbled upon this site. I started looking for similar bands as well as the essentials (since I didn't knew other prog bands except DT at that time). After a couple of months later I joined the forums and here I am today. If it wasn't for PA I wouldn't be listening to Prog Rock today! -------------

Imdb forum for Pink Floyd's the Wall. I thought it was the best album ever, it totally turned me on to music, and then there was one thread on imdb where some guys discussed what prog was, as usual, and someone linked to progarchives. There you go.

I was simply bored at work - did a search on 'progressive rock' & was directed to this site, which had a 'forum'... "what's that?" I wondered (I've never been particularly interweb savvy ), so popped in, and there were a couple of others there, too (if I remember rightly, there were only a very few members in those days), one of which was Peter & the rest is history.
I've made firm friends here over the years & discovered many new bands (also introduced quite a few) - as far as how many hours I've been on this site since I first discovered it... I don't want to think about that...  -------------

i used to google band names for more info and many times PA was the first choice.. but on;y after a while did i realise it was the best prog database in the whole world!!!! ------------- -music is like pornography... sometimes amateurs turn us on, even more... -sometimes you are the pigeon and sometimes you are the statue... |

Back in November-December 2004 I started being member down some forums I enjoyed - like Tangerine Dream's official one, Mike Oldfield's fansite one, Pink Floyd's unofficial one or Genesis's particular one (couldn't find a Schulze forum, can't find even to this day   ).Around Christmas time, over at the Tangerine Dream forum I discovered a concept topic old members have decided, months ago, to initiate. One topic of the entire concept (in total they were nine) featured a Tangerine Dream album vs. a Klaus Schulze debate (based on common or contemporary features), which included the possible of reviewing. So that, with some vacation effort, I had reviewed almost every classic Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze album. Later on, I incidentally found Prog Archives to have Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze added (and to recognize the movement of progressive electronic). The chance of reviewing them not only in the Tangerine Dream forum, but also here, was something I couldn't resist. My first ever reviews, very short and very numb, are actually from that period - and I actually don't think of changing them. After reviewing a lot of TD and KS, I decided to enter the forum, simply because I already had enough memberships down the forums I mentioned and wanted one more. For a few days, I randomly posted about 40 messages in different topics, plus an incoherent one, made of emoticons, in the Mariah Carey thread (thus, managing my debut in those of spam-topics as well ). But, for some reasons, I felt the forum was huge and diverse, even cold in conversation. So I abandoned it till (I had another nick, so I think that account of mine lies busted around, somewhere) February 2005, when I joined and I never ever left.  So, however awful it sounds, I didn't come for research (barely knew and listened to 20 bands that were in PA, at that time), I didn't come out of progressive dedication (classic and electronic still ruled those days, progressive rock was only starting to be a hobby genre, thanks to me becoming more open-minded) and, after totally getting in the mood of Mariah Carey and some small topics of great interest, I settled down for fun, for reviews and for a bit of prog knowledge. I honestly can't remember how I first came across PA, but it was probably from having a general rummage around looking for prog music sites.
I used the site for a few months before I really took any notice of the forum, then it was the wit of Snow Dog that made me jump in and join. That was just over 2 years ago.

Exactly the same for me; bored at work, searched on prog rock and was led here. I signed up straight away. That was back in 2004. I've made friends here, with whom I've gone to gig's, gone for beer and curry evenings and generally talked prog nonesense with for some time now. I've discovered new bands through the archives, reviews and the advice on others, and generally have never got bored repeating the same inane rubbish on these forums for three years. A great community. It's a pleasure sharing it with you all.

Interesting thread.... Here's my story: An old friend, who owns over 2000 LPs and CDs of which I'm really jealous, told me he is a regular visitor (but not a member) here. I didn't do much with that information, until I noticed that Googling for any prog band name plus the word 'discography' made this site show up as the first hit, in about 90% of cases. So I decided to have a look around, then I joined, got hooked, met new soul mates in music and recently became a collaborator ... Thanks to this site, I have regained my interest in (hard)rock and prog that eroded to almost nothing during the nineties. I changed jobs, and found myself in an office job (with three labs adjunct) instead of on the field job, and therefore almost unrestricted web access.
The first coffee break, I googled Harmonium and Maneige and found this place!
The place was almost brand new (in its actual form), so I started one line reviews to give the place a little credibility! (there must still be one or two of those around
 )Never left since, even if I took a while before joining the forum. ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

I first came across this site whilst searching for 'progressive rock'. I was about 16 at the time and we'd just gotten a home PC. The first time I went on the internet, this must have been one of the first sites I came across.
I have actually been using the site since then- January 2004- and starting writing reviews around July 2004 (I'd just finished my GCSE exams then). I'm something of a veteran of the site, although I didn't join the forum until 2005.

I found PA quite by chance - it was a hot summer Sunday, and on the previous day I had had quite an unpleasant falling out with some people I used to frequent in Rome. I was home alone, surfing the web and looking at some music sites, when I clicked on the Links section of one of those prog websites (I think it was either ProgressiveEars or Sea of Tranquillity, though now of course I don't remember). As soon as I opened PA's homepage and then the forums, I really liked what I saw... I registered immediately, introduced myself, and started posting... At first I felt somewhat out of my depth, and it took me almost a year to really get into the thick of things. The turning point for me was when, in May 2006, I got broadband connection at home and became a SC (I was already a Prog Reviewer at the time) for the Symphonic Team. Little did I know that it was going to change my life.... The rest is history.

Purely by chance.I had rediscovered my love for prog @ 2003 and wanted to re-aquaint myself with it but only one of my friends is into prog and I don't see him all that often.
I Googled 'Prog'.Up came PAs and I joined right away as one of the active topics was 'In which order should I buy VdGG albums' and I thought that I had to add my two-penneth's worth. Snow Dog was the first person to reply to my post.He was welcoming and humerous and found quite quickly that most of the members on PAs were of a similar attitude... Curses! -------------

It was around June 2004, I think, when I first stumbled on this site. I had just discovered Yes, if memory serves me well, and I was searching for new albums to listen to. It took me a while to notice the forum and register myself, but this is still the only forum where I remain active.

nothing like a bit of PA nostalgia... I might as well chime in with my "PA history"....umm, I've actually been around here for quite a while, the first time I ever came across this site was sometime in mid-late 2003, the same way most everyone did: google. Actually, I didn't know much about progressive rock in those days outside of Yes and Pink Floyd (two of my favorite bands at the time). I believe King Crimson are responsible for my stumbling in: a friend of mine, also a Pink Floyd fan, was an even bigger KC fan and always went on about 21st Century Schizoid Man. So if I recall correctly, a google search for ItCotCK eventually led me here. No forum in those days, very few reviews too but I can recall many short descriptions posted by a chap named Hugues (as he said)...I can recall that he didn't like Styx very much
 (yes, I loved them and found it strange that they were here...plenty of 1 and 2 star reviews for Kilroy to go 'round ). At any rate, I frequented the site for a while, discovered the forum probably in 2004 sometime. I didn't post for some time but I liked stopping on occasional, it was much smaller then but the member's were very friendly and always clever....joined the forum originally in '05, lots of interesting people...there was wallace (blubberin' ol scotsman) and of course Reed (before he became a big shot admin ); then the troublemakers (anyone remember karnie?....those Rush v. ELP threads were oh sooo much fun). Anyway, I disappeared for a while and now I'm back and enjoying this great place more than ever. Cheers  |

I did a search for Progressive Radio (looking for a station that was not online...which I've still yet to find) and thanks to that prog radio link at the top of the page this site appeared. At first I wasn't really fully into prog so I just browsed. As I got deeper in to it, I began to use as a resource to look up different bands and what albums to explore and to download a few songs (became more than a few though in the end). This was around Dec. 04. Took from then to March for me to find the forums. Stumbled across a 'funniest song title' thread or something like that (which was the first one I looked at) and found out some pretty interesting things (for one thing Forever Enistein, which wasn't on the site at the time). Shortly after that, I joined the forums pretty much just to try something new (I've never signed up for a forum before hand). I think the first thread I posted in was about your top ten GG songs. And, as they say, the rest is history....
Been hooked ever since. This is still the best prog site around (even with Queen, The Who, The Beatles, ELO, etc  ).  ------------- Dig me...But don't...Bury me I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect. |
