another one of my pseudo threads.

Do you all reflect on your tastes, wondering how you came to have them? And if so, do you - as I do - lament about how bad they are? ;P I know this is a rather "enlightened forum" in some ways, but I do see people complaining about criticism and overratedness and basically everything that impugns their taste to even the slightest degree, and naturally this aura of touchiness and insecurity makes me wonder how much stock you all put in the music you've gravitated towards.

Personally, I spend time wondering why I like the things I do, trying to identify things I like only because of their relations to other things, redundancy among my favourite bands of similar genres, and I generally hone and consider my tastes. This is reflected in a fairly small collection of CDs and videos, as I like to think I'm constantly refining my tastes towards a body of music I'll always be comfortable with. It's probably hopeless, isn't it?

Even so, I find that it's hard to part with some of the bratty (ATDI/Mars Volta, Melt-Banana, everything Steve Albini did), simplistic (doom metal) and just plain embarassing (video game scores, unbelievably cutesy japanese pop, cabaret and new wave) music that I used to like more. I know that I like them now but will probably grow out of them, yet I keep these CDs around.

anyway, pick some poll options and then post about what your tastes mean to yourself!

Voted for six.

Even if I like a lot of silly pop, oldies, metal and hits from my childhood/teens etc...  option number 9 is the one I disagree with the most.

if i like it, i listen to it although i don't think i have a collection of 100 bands yet..

i don't really think why i like something, mostly it's just like 'hey, this sounds cool' and so i listen to that certain band. as for the 'old days stuff', some of them remains among my favourite, although there're lots of them that i don't listen to anymore

but i believe no one has a bad taste, it's all only the matter of perspective. you can't say that because somebody like err.. rap for example, they have a bad taste because of that. to them, rap sounds good and there's absolutely no point in arguing over things like that, wasting time..and energy too

so option three(with a bit of exception) and nine for me

I chose option # 3.Smile

I enjoy a wide variety of musical forms and artists. Though it's dear to me, prog rock is only a fraction of my overall listening range.

I have a liking for the bizarre. I wouldn't say "the weirder the better" because I have seen and heard weird things I didn't like; some weird things are definitely boring, like putting on a white shirt, a tie and a grey suit each morning.

I picked the third option.  If it sounds good to me, I'll listen to it.  But I don' think I listen to 100+ bands....

I listen to anything I like, which ends up being a lot, and it does cover a wide range.  Recently I've been listening to stuff from almost every progressive genre, and a lot else too.

I voted for "If I like it, I listen to it - my collection spans 100 bands". When i was younger i used to read books that i am supposed to read and listen to albums that i am supposed to listen. Peer pressure from my age group brainwashed me back in the day. LOL

Now i am free. I can do something that i never did as a kid: if it sux, close the book or turn off the record player.

I don't have peer pressure from Progarchives either. If million fans of Tool claim that it is a great prog band and my ear says it is boring grunge metal, i trust on my ears.

There was a time when i used to think it is important to have excatly the right experiences to "climb up" in the social ladder. Today i'm a different person and i believe to my soul. If music makes me feel good then it's good for me. Otherwise i just move into something else.

I know what I like, but what I know doesn't make any sense. Wink

I've never experienced much peer pressure from anyone, so my tastes seem to roam all over the place. I'm glad that they do, nothing is sillier than restricting yourself to one single genre.

I picked the third option.

i've found my obscure genre niche. I only listen to prog and prog related music. My collection of music has evolved into a collection of pure prog and I have discarded or shuned everything else. why? because I just can't seem to like anything else! I'll give new stuff a try, but usually only classic prog and fusion will enter the special top two shelves of my cd collection!

i'd argue prog over rap to the death! silly? perhaps, but i'd still do it! I believe that it's about much more than what any individual likes: it's about musical integrity. some music (like prog) is simply more musical than other 'music' (like rap).

If I like it I listen to it, and I have the 100+ bands part to boot.

Most of it falls under the prog banner however, mostly because thats what I prefer to buy. I still listen to classic rock bands, Jazz bands, etc but not nearly as much.

Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive
Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.

I used to reflect on my taste... Now i understood it's like trying to justify who you are...

I don't reflect on my taste... I just go along with it and follow it....

If I like it I listen to it.  I have well over 100 bands in my collection, and not all of them are prog.  Shocked  I also have some (non-prog) metal, folk, alternative, new wave, and classical (does John Williams count as classical? LOL).  But 75% of my collection is prog, of various subgenres.

I like everything, basically. Computer game music is one of my favourite genres, hehe..
No, but really, i can find something good in almost any genre, and i'm rarely ashamed of liking anything at all anymore. J-pop is rather terrible, and R'nB is still not on my playlist, but if i like a song, regardless of genre, i don't feel ashamed of it any more. With a few exceptions, of course,... :)
