Thanks for posting that - there are times when I feel like a bit of a geek given the amount of time I squander on this forum, but reading that makes me feel positively well balanced.

Yes, it was.  I was one of those constantly searching for clues re the "Paul is Dead" myth: lyrical, musical, visual.  There are actually quite a few, as any Beatle freak can tell you.

However, few if any of us took it seriously; even back then it was obviously a "marketing" gimmick - and possibly one of the best in history.
