First of all, this is not a mutual arse-licking thread . This is a thread of honour and respect!
And the winner is...Sinkadotentree (John)!!!
Rather rare guest in forum, he's immensly masterful in reviews. How come that a 40-yea old man from Canada has THE SAME taste as me? Every time I see a 4 or 5-star review from him, I know what will be another favourite album of mine. Keep the things going, John, you're great!
Also I must mention Erik "The Holland Rocket" Neuteboom - yo, mellotron masta! - for his Symphonic recommendations, chamberry(Ruben) for his Post-Rock/Modern Prog reviews (sadly, sometimes his reviews are only ones for certain bands and albums ) and avestin(Assaf) who'll always help with obscure and hard-to-find stuff (rare but awesome reviews!!!). Thank you all, guys...and forgive me, the ones whom I didn't mention!

I second the opinion that John Davie is an fine, important, top reviewer. Having almost a daily review, as rhythm, and combining leisure impressions with deeply satisfying knowledge and art-focus, his reviews (whether focused or advantageously diverse) prove worthy.
Out of the quartet who currently dominates the "top", let me appreciate most Bob (Easy Livin)'s reviews. Always one of my favorite as style and as charm.
Next up, I really enjoy most reviews that are posted by Cesar Inca (sadly, he posts only rarely), ClemofNazareth (which, until inpraiseoffolly and Mr. T got crazy about lengthiness, combined a record of words and insight fullness ), Ruben (chamberry) - definitely!!, memowakeman, Guigo, David!! (Atavachron).

It's lucky I've only made a limited amount of reviews, otherwise I maybe on the "he posts reviews that are far too long and boring" list.
As for favourite reviewers, well it's difficult.
Rico always makes me giggle... I've no idea what he's on about most of the time, but his use of words is extraordinary! How can that guy have such a large vocabulary and yet still make up non-existant words, as well?
ClemOfNazarath and Syzygy's reviews are always well thought out too. I prefer longer, succinct, well written reviews. I guess that goes against many peoples' ideas here.
Another favourite reviewer of mine is Guigo.
One must also not forget David's (Atavachron) reviews, he's an exceptional writer and should definitely write more often.
As should I, of course.

I am in NO MEANS kissing this guys a$$, but i do like the way Cygnus X-2 (Robert Pena) reviews. Im not surprised either, because his age is within a year to two years of mine. His taste in music is very closely related to mine, and every one of his reviews are very thought out and well done. I say this, because i judge an album just as much on what other people think about, than what i think about it. When i see Cygnus X-2's reviews i take them quite to heart. Good job Rob. .

I certainly hope not!!!! thanks anyway !!
I'd like to point out Bob's reviews are always a fun read, very often agreeable, and I love the titles he gives them! Shows he puts a lot of reflections into them. His Caravans, Camels, but not Canterbury about Santana's Caravanserai is a classic!!
My buddy Chris (Syzygy)'s reviews are always incredibly helpful, especially when I don't get an album, he finds the words to make it click ( didn't say like, though )
Cert's reviews are always interesting, but maybe slightly pedantic and often overlong. and speaking of long reviews, I'd like to echo on Rico's reviews: I think the man is flying up on his cloud when he reviews, I've no clue to what he's on to, but he's got such a way with words, in a language that's not his first....
Found a few of Assaf's reviews interesting (few because there aren't many ), I do reckon Sinkadotentree's reviews catch my eyes as Martin Didriech (hdfsch), Raffaella's , Fitzcarraldo and Peter's (when not retrieved ) reviews do as well!
Loved Trotsky's reviews too. Miss you Martin
Among the newer PR, Zowieziggy is certainly the one to be reckoned with! He's the one I consider the first menace to my throne too, at the rate he's going!
Mentions to Ipof, Atavachron (Dave), Cesar, Zitro, Hegede, Paffnutti, Zac and Clem

that's beginning to be a nice compliment, I'm not worried. but, overall, there should be at least some kind of clue what I like about an album. Over which lots of adjectives and writing skills explode.

Nice one. However he (ours, not the 16th century one) really writes well, kudos to him!
There are a lot of reviewers out there making splendid reviews, or preciously useful ones, or spreading contagious enthusiasm.
I usually check all the reviews and I stop to read in full whenever I notice the signature of fuxi, David (Atavachron) and Bob (Easy Livin - those titles are fantastic!), probably my favourite reviewers! A special mention goes to Erik, whatever he reviews seems like heavenly attractive. One other thing I admire is Sean Trane's restless objectivity and ability to express all what's needed in few concise sentences a la the Latin prose. Another special mention goes for those who focus on particular, unexplored, local scenes, like the Eastern European scene [especialy Igor (Prog-jester) for Russia, Seyo for the ex-Yugo scene, Moris (clarke2001 - I like all his reviews); btw, Tuzvi, why don't you review the Polish prog you're promoting, that would be fantastic] or the Latin American scene [Guigo (Atkingani), whose reviews are a pleasure, and Cesar Inca]. These guys' efforts are really inspiring. Other reviewers I enjoy reading are richardh, ZowieZiggy (so informative!), salmacis (so ojective!), Raffaella (Ghost Rider - so balanced!), also Peter's old reviews, Certif1ed's (definitely the ones I learn the most from), Gatot's, Alan's (Chopper), Joolz', sinkadotentree's (I would like to see him more on the forums), Chicapah's, Jake's (1800jarejay), and many more. There are also many excellent reviewers who haven't yet made it to Prog Reviewer, like The Whistler (NOT Ian Anderson! - one of my favourites! too bad his collection is growing at a slow rate), Kotro, Cheesecakemouse, paolo.beenees and last but not least Ben (progismylife)... When's the next promotion round?
And finally, above all there are Rico (the wiz-kid) and Mandy ("most preffered" enthusiast), definitely PA's own wonders...
They, along with those many other guys I haven't mentioned, make this site a great resource and a great place. Thanks!

Thanks for the mention, andu. I do try to remain objective about albums/genres when I can- one of my main bugbears about reviews of prog albums in the mainstream music press is that the reviewer's own preferences/prejudices tend to taint their judgement and as a result, you get paragraphs of pure rock snobbery. There are of course objections to the rule for me- I find it hard to be objective about the 'poetry' on Moody Blues albums, most orchestra/rock band crossovers, Magellan, 'A Passion Play' and 'Olias Of Sunhillow'...To say I'm not a fan of these is an understatement.
As for my favourite reviewers? I've always loved Easy Livin's/Bob's reviews; the headlines are sheer class and the reviews themselves are always succinct and to the point (something I struggled with for some time!!). Hugues', Trotsky/Martin's, Peter's, Erik's are always well written and enjoyable too.
As for non collaborators/prog-reviewers, I like The Whistler and progismylife's reviews a lot.

You're all masterliness... but since I like virtually every sub genre on the site, I tend to listen to different people when it comes to different music.
For Kraut and electronic... Philippe is the man, the most priceless resource. Followed closely by Rico and Oliver.
For prog folk, most classic symphoni, RIO/avant and almost anything else(gotta use good judgement here though ).. Hugues is masterliness.
For Symphonic and RPI... Eric and Micky, also Mandy in cases when I can understand the reviews
For neo, guidance in Zappa albums, and anything else... Cyg, we have very very similar tastes. Followed by Blowie.
For obscure Avant stuff... Chris, Adam and Assaf.
Prog metal... Jody, Joey and Mike.
etc....

Thanks for mentioning my name, guys.
I really like reviews from many members here in PA and they helped me
alot one way or another (non-prog reviewers as well like Drakk and a
couple others), but these next guys are the cream of the crop. I read
their reviews without thinking twice:
Trickster F. - The guy that got me into one of my favorite bands. Haven't been dissapointed with his 5 star ratings yet.
TRoTZ - Short, sweet and to the point. He makes one of the
tightest reviews around and be as informative as any other 500+ words
reviews (no offense!)
Sean Trane - How more versatile can you be!
Syzygy - a very informative fellow. I managed to discover alot of bands thanks to him.
There are many more worth mentioning (Opethguitarist, Avestin, Cignus,
The Miracle, Black Velvet, Sinkadotentree, Gatot, IPOF, Rico, etc.),
but I don't have all night to do a list that big.

I think it's time for a second batch of applause from me!
I've rarely had to read Gatot's reviews, because he really doesn't post reviews where I review (we seem to avoid each other...)
Salmacis write a good review as well (when I encounter them), ditto for Julian (joolz). Ansen and Stonie's reviews when encountered.
Andrea Cortese's reviews on RPI are always helpful and I like his analysis on lyrics.
Chamberry's reviews I've encountered a fair bit of late and I like them.
Ian "Vibrationbaby" Gledhill writes a particularly good review as well! Those Octobre reviews were particularly hard to match, Ian!

I'm always reluctant to name names in such threads, as inevitably I will miss may people who deserve to be mentioned.
We have a wonderful team of prog reviewers and collaborators who write quite outstanding reviews. The strength of the site is the combined depth of knowledge we have, and the passion we share for our music.
If I can indulge for a minute, I'd mention our prolific guys, Hugues, Erik and Ivan, who do not allow quantity to in any way diminish quality. I always admire Gatot for his never ending positive attitude to virtually every album.
Salmacis and I form a mutual admiration society, as our taste is very similar. There is a maturity and depth of knowledge to him though which should inspire our younger members.
Tony writes great reviews, but needs a kick to at least finish the Rush ones! Likewise Peter, one of our early greats needs to find his muse again sharpish! Good to see Vibe and Lor68 submitting again too.
Shakespeare, Zowie Ziggy, and the all the neo-1000 group (they are getting there fast) are all great reviewers.
We have some great new reviewers too, who I'm sure will become prog reviewers soon. Kenneth Levine comes to mind straight away, but there are many others.
Sincere apologies to those I have not mentioned, it is my privilege to read each and every review which is posted to the site.

I have thought about this long and hard, and I have noticed that, by and large, when I read a review that resonates emotionally (or intellectually) with me, I tell the chap about it. Usually through PMs, but if I see 'em on the forums, I tell 'em so.
However, the reviewer that I feel is the best is Chicapah. We don't always agree; in fact, it was through "hate mail" that I got into contact with him. However, I can always understand his position, and all the writing is well played and perfectly understandable, while remaining entertaining and enlightening concerning both the music and the musicians.
Sorry to single you out mate.

That's actually good. I remember much worse interpretations of myself reviewing. (damn, I've started to write much too saturated again, gotta cut down...yet again )

I don't know why, but it's fun reading your random Schulze reviews for stuff like Dark Side of the Moog part 83 and that porn album.

I just spent some time reading several of the reviews of our common friend ../Collaborators.asp?id=4892 - laplace . What I don't know is why isn't he already Prog Reviewer, with an solid case like his: 67 reviews, very varied choice of albums, little of which are from the more mainstream prog, good ratings distribution (only 9 five star reviews from 67), excellent writing, always bringing something fresh without making it too long. And he writes the best and fairest negative reviews, along Certifi1ed's.

A big bravo to ZOWIE ZIGGY ( more than 700 reviews in less than 6 months , all long ones, very clear and complete, none in the 4-5 lines kind you see all the time around here)
RICOCHET is the best writer as he adds a lot of poetry in his reviews, a unique talent.
SALMACIS is very good too, going in depth for everry album he reviews
Anything less than 10 lines should not be considered as reviews, i think !

couldn't agree more with those....
Ziggy is becoming quite the reviewing legend... so a bit of a ode to him...
Ziggy reviewed that prog, jamming good with Marillion and Ange
The spiders from Mars. He wrote it left hand
But made it too fast
Became the special man, then we were Ziggy's fans

Man Overboard. Only a few reviews, but they are golden!
Another mention goes to russellk . Senior member from 2005, why he's not PR? http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=117783 - This is, IMHO, the best review ever stored on PA server. It's not a review. It's a poetry.

MEN!!!! Always ready to add foxy-looking women with the excuse they're prog ....
Time for revenge, though... You didn't mention ME - when I was a reviewer, that is... Now people don't even remember heroic tour-de-forces such as my famed "Awake" review, which amazed DT fans (expecting a severe bashing) for its fairness. I suppose I should try my hand again, but I seem to have run out of inspiration .

My favourites are Gatot's (so passionate), Certif1ed's (often amusing with top notch analysis) and Erik Neuteboom's (short and sweet, he writes reviews for so many oscure albums).

This site has a remarkable number of knowledgable, perceptive reviewers
who manage to be informative and entertaining, so a thread like this is
as much about who isn't mentioned as it is about who gets an honourable
mention. So, at the risk of alienating anybody I haven't already
alienated...
My friend Sean Trane manages to combine a remarkable breadth of
knowledge with a real depth of understanding, and when he gives an
album more than 3 stars it really means something.
Another reviewer who has voluntarily spent time in my company more than
once is Alan 'Chopper' Hyde, who gives extremely clear sighted and
realistic reviews of proto prog and prog related albums. It's easy to
cover stuff that hardly anybody else knows about, but far more of a
challenge to find something new and pertinent to say about The Beatles;
Alan manages this and makes it look effortless.
And just in case anybody thinks this is turning into a mutual love in,
I have always enjoyed Cert1fied's reviews, and I hope he returns to
review some more albums soon.
Having said that I can't think of a reviewer or collab whose reviews I
don't like or find informative, especially those tireless specialists
Like Erik Neuteboom, Philippe or Ricochet.
Carry on proggin' one and all!

Thanks for mentioning my name so many times, keep in mind that my father refused to give any compliment during the first 80 years of his life so you have compensated a lot, this means very much to me, what a boost
Personally I appreciate Cesar Inca Mendoza, Salmacis, Ricochet, ZowieZiggy, Sean Trane, Gatot, Andrea Cortese, Sinkadotentree and Easy Livin because of the way they blend a personal flavor with a good view and an important amount of objectivity so you can rely on these reviewers. In fact Prog Archives hosts many good reviewers at this moment!
And I have to mention Avestin, Prog-jester and Bhikkhu for their support to lesser and unknown new progrock bands

I tend to enjoy the reviews of ZowieZiggy, Gatog and The T the most (of the ones who review a lot) and have musical tastes similar to mine for the most part. Ricochet has the best usage of the English language here, though I need a bit of concentration in order to comprehend his reviews well. His musical tastes are similar as well from the albums I know.
The reviews from all collaborators are very informative and the only subpar ones tend to be mostly on the early reviews, which may be due to the fact that the reviewers were not titled 'prog reviewer' at that time. Hey, some of my early reviews are embarrasing

woa, nice topic, made it passed these eyes somehow.
The reviewers I follow almost religously - I read pretty much everything they write on here:
Finnforest, Erik, Salmacis, Dave Connoly (when he used to review), Ivan Melgar Morey, Peter Rideout, Andrea Parentin, ClemofNazareth
Special mention to these talented individuals:
Gatot, Bob McBeath, Hugues, James Unger, Cesar Inca, Martin Vengadesan, Andrea Cortese, Micky & Raf, Shakespeare (what are you doing here...don't you have some sonnets to write?), Russelk, Rollie Anderson, Tszirmay, maani, Cert, James Lee...
phew...you can see I've read a good many reviews (without writing any myself ), these are the people that spring to mind right away, really everyone is an excellent reviewer that I've come across. I'd like to express my gratitude to all of the individuals who work hard to make this place the best source of prog rock reviews on the web IMO
as Gatot would say, Keep on Proggin'

Mine would be Chamberry. So many times I come to an album page and there is only 1 rating and low and behold it is Chamberry. If not for Chamberry so many albums would have no reviews at all.
Thank you

*goddamn these pop-up ads when I am trying to listen to groups for this
damn site on my computer... can't do that and keep the volume down*
rant over...
she has been raving about it to me.. has made me interested to hear
it... and I am definitely not a fan of the group. I'm in her boat
and do find it interesting when groups do covers/interpetations like
that. She does have a good number of albums, as she mentions in
her review, and they are really interesting to listen to... but for the
insipid DT album with those cover songs on it... was enough to send me
running to grab a Caravan album

I don't know who my favorite reviewer is, but there's this one review that is the greatest review ever in all dimensions. It's a review of The Flower King's Unfold the Future by a guy called Man Overboard. Most epic story leading into a review ever, I can so picture being in that situation. Read it, all of you.
