In the wake of the recent melee over the latest Proto-Prog addition, I feel it is time for me to speak up. This is not about the merits of any band in Proto or Related, but I think there is an overt amount of attention paid to those bands. There have been many new full prog bands added, but you hardly see anyone talking about them. With the Exception of Erik's "Symphonic Progressive Rock Appreciation Thread," most of the activity in the "Prog Music Lounge" is about the same big names. Even then, I find it to be one of the less active lounges.
It's time for us to ask ourselves why we are here. Progressive music is supposed to be the focus of the site. I also think that many of us came here with hopes of discovering something new. However, that can't happen if we are only talking about the most well know artists, or proto/related artists that are played daily on every classic rock station. So, I am embarking on a crusade to bring forth new artists, and hidden old gems. I plan on starting threads dedicated to this venture. Erik already started a while back, but we need more. I hope I will find support in this venture. It's a good bet that most of what I bring up will be symphonic, because that's what I know best. I am looking to others to unveil some of their lesser-known favorites. So what do you say? Let's (prog) Rock! ------------- a.k.a. That's the reason I promote the Unsigned Bands forum (prog future is there) but with few exceptions no one really cares too much about them.
Anyway, a couple of bands there are going to the studios and soon they'll be here requesting their inclusion via the Suggest forum. ------------- Guigo ~~~~~~ |

What I am pushing here is discussion about the vast number of bands already listed on the site. I agree wholeheartedly!  Assaf's various threads have been hugely helpful in this regard, but we definitely need more. I personally haven't found the energy to create such threads knowing that they'll only get 0-3 responses, but maybe that should change. -------------

I'll support this how I can. I lately listened to much more than my prog classics, so I probably could be good in some of this desired direction. I'm also thinking to revive the Art Rock Appreciation Thread Ben once started and to give more introspective in the entire genre, through that topic. (but I'm not yet convinced that I'll do this). -------------

It's a very good idea, actually. Very "healthy".
I'd like to see the revival of this forum with some interesting discussions on some (relatively) new issues.
Hopefully, this idea will come true, sometime...

Great effort Bhikkhu, straight from your progrock heart Let's unite and keep ourselves motivated and let's focus on the good things instead of drowning in the swamp of complains about negative things and loosing energy during personal clashes, fellow progheads/symphomaniacs

I think that your call is necessary because of the huge amount of added non-prog bands while lots of interesting progrock bands still have to be added to Prog Archives, for example Combination Head, The Third Ending and Maze Of Time, lots of progrock site paid attention to their music but on Prog Archives it remains almost silent about these bands. Fortunately we have now the Update New Bands thread, a good thread because ther we can focus on new progrock bands and there we can communicate, I conclude that thanks to this thread there is a better communication, this will result in quicker additions, for example Combination Head, The Third Ending and Maze Of Time 
Personally I have the idea that since I joined Prog Archives in early 2004, I have to double my efforts to keep my motivation because it's more and more about non-prog bands on this site, it has become way more commercial and if often turns into too emotional about some subjects.Posted By: Dim

There's an old saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". The simple fact is that people tend to focus on bands they are familiar with. You only have to look at the number of views of threads about less well known bands to see how they are ignored.
The proto prog and prog related sections serve well to bring people into the site. We would not have been nearly as successful without them. The challenge for our collaborators is therefore, now that we have them here, how do we educate them in the wide range of music which is here?
The obvious answer would be to share the music, but that brings with it copyright issues. So what can we do to encourage people to investigate and discuss less well known bands.
I don't have the answers. What I would say though is don't blame the PR and PP categories, without them many of our members would not be here to present the prog bands to.

I am under no illusion that the old discussions won't continue as always. However, there are plenty of members here that have the lesser known stuff, but still get dragged into the the topics concerning the well covered artists. I am just trying to encourage some alternate topics. I'm sure there are members that want to discover some of these oddities that we love. It's funny, HT and me (We chat almost every night) keep updated with rare stuff not because of the forum, but in most cases because in our chats we end talking about bands we never heard before and it's a challenge for us to find something about the band the other one mentioned the last night.
This is what we need in the forum, open the interest of people for unknown stuff, I don't know if we will achive full success, but every step we give is an advance..
I just hope people join this cruzade to rescue Prog, I see a positive attitude, relation between Collaborators is better than ever, Erik has helped us with many additions and his thread is a great source of information,. Art Rock team has a lot of feedback, Sean and Folk also, this can work..
So, lets not leave it in words.
