Topic: Standard 'Olympic' Country Codes

Subject: Standard 'Olympic' Country Codes

When it comes to identifying a country of origin that a band comes from where there is a shared band name it seems there is no real standard applied in PA. As an example you will find bands from France with either (FRA) or (FR) as a country identifier, or from Italy the code may be (ITA) or (IT)...

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1337 - ASGARD (FRA) discography, MP3, videos and reviews

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2966 - EDEN (FR) discography, MP3, videos and reviews

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=30 - ASGARD (ITA) discography, MP3, videos and reviews

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=3013 - CLEPSYDRA (IT) discography, MP3, videos and reviews

My suggestion: PA should adopt the Standard 'Olympic' Country Codes for applying the country of origin as a standard, giving consistency of entry of information in PA. The list of codes can be found here:

http://geography.about.com/od/countryinformation/a/olympiccodes.htm - http://geography.about.com/od/countryinformation/a/olympiccodes.htm

I understand this is not a 'biggie' but consistency of entry of information leads to better understanding of what people are reading and does make things a little more 'professional'.

Anyway, a little something to think about in amongst all the other things.

Cheers,

Absolutely agree ... we should be consistent .... I'll have a look at it!

OK, I prepared a list… I shan’t change the entries due to the problems with the diacritic signs in my computer. The correct code of a country is below each group of bands.

There are three groups that should be discussed.

1. Bands with the same names:

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1299 - Spain

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2064 - Poland

Should be – ESP, POL         ***

Should be – GER, GBR      ***

2. Bands with the similar names: Here the difference is in a diacritic sign only. I think these bands also should bear the countries codes beside them.

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1484 - Mexico

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1653 - Italy

Should be – MEX, ITA        ***

Should be – USA, CAN

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1078 - Sweden

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1349 - New Zealand

Should be – SWE, NZL

3. Bands without the counterpart but with the country marker (for what reason?):I suggest to delete the countries codes.

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=456 - Argentina

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=131 - United Kingdom

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=163 - United States

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2892 - United Kingdom

I suppose there are bands with the same or similar names that are not prog and thus are not in the archives. That's the case of NIRVANA for instance. Smile

BTW, how would you solve the case of IRON MAIDEN? We've got one IRON MAIDEN from UK and we're probably going to have another band with the same name from the same country (or do we have them already?).

If we have two bands with the same name from the same country, there should be another determinators (or how do you say it in English?).

For example, there are two Camels in PA, differentiated by the years of activity:
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=50 - CAMEL Symphonic Prog United Kingdom
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2511 - CAMEL (60'S) Psychedelic/Space Rock United Kingdom

(these two entries should be updated too, I think...)

There is another example:
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=216 - LEVIATHAN (ITA) Neo Progressive Italy
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1512 - LEVIATHAN (USA 70S) Crossover Prog United States
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=207 - LEVIATHAN (USA 90S) Progressive Metal United States

If both the name and the years of activity are the same, you may put a subgenre as a determinator...

Of course this is the case, there shouldn't be any doubt about it.

But still, I don't think we need it unless the other band (say, Nirvana of the USA) is added to PA...

Thanks, Guigo!

By the way, is it possible to move this thread to the "Errors & Omissions" section?

I think it'll be more helpful there.

Thanks in advance.

Done! Smile

BTW, I think we have to find a standard for the bands' names, some are all in capital letters and some (the majority) have only the initial as capital. Anyway, some bands like UK or IZZ, maybe should be displayed in all capitals.

Yes, maybe. The differences exist now, but they are possible to be seen only in editing zone, not in the alphabet pages and bands/artists ones. Thus, how many of the site users know that the Armenian Prog-Folk band lead by Vahan Artsruni is called ARTSRUNI and not Artsruni? -- it is impossible to see from the mentioned pages (I found that simply by chance...) Somehow all the letters become upper-cased when appearing in alphabet lists...

It's not some specifical diacritics. It's the process which is annoying, since I have to rewrite all the diacritics.

I can do it myself, but it'll take ages. If I hadn't those settings problems, it'd took seconds. That's all...

It is very kind from you.

You may have a look to my long post (a list, to be more precise) on the previous page -- I update it from time to time, adding a *** mark to the group of bands being corrected (I also post here each such a group in a separate post).

Some names simply killing me because of the diacritics ( http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1994 - AMON DÜÜL , for example...) -- the settings on my PC don't fit the ones in the correction zone.

I remember about Octopus (Chi) for the moment (there should be more, I just don't remember all of them). Is it possible to change it to CHI ? (the text of the bio contains my "beloved" diacritics"... Embarrassed  Big%20smile it was a reason why I kept it as it was)

Thanks in advance!

I don't want to be picky because I think this system is great, but aren't AMON DÜÜL (GBR)  better known just about everywhere else as AMON DÜÜL UK?

What?

Ops... maybe you have reason Dean, but if we write AMON DUUL UK then the (GBR) won't be needed and the original AMON DUUL could be writen without (GER).

Frankly, I discovered the British AMON DUUL only after discovering PA. Embarrassed Hence, I see no problem in having an exception here.

I think that since Amon Düül are all inter-related the exception is justified.

Thanks for paying attention, Coops!

There is a long post of mine at the first page of this thread where all the (found) cases are mentioned (including those you've just posted). The changes made are inspected and the changed cases are marked in that post. The process is in progress...

As for ANON DUULs -- the system were quite neat...

You say the band was known everywhere as AMON DUUL UK?

Then, maybe, this kind of a compromiss is possible:

AMON DUUL (GBR) (aka AMON DUUL UK)

AMON DUUL (GER)

AMON DUUL II

Question

^ I would suggest asking for advice from the Krautrock team (or BaldFriede) on the Amon Düüls ... IMO they are a special case because of their inter-linked history.

Embarrassed if my words sounded somewhat unpleasant -- that wasn't intended by any means.

All the posts of missed cases are welcome. Also, bands are being added to PA from time to time, and there is always a chance of creating some new pairs of bands with the same name...

You're right - I suggest to make it in this way: Amon Düül (UK)
the (UK) expression is just a part of the name used for differentiating the bands.

So on the other side there is even no need for Amon Düül (GER)

Another tricky thing is the name of Amon Düül 2 - dominantly used as Amon Düül II but the website shows it in another way Confused

A little appendix about the curious name:
it's a combination of Amon, the Egyptian sun-god and Düül as the name of a turkish fantasy figure
