Bravehearth: The story of a fireplace which leads its fellow fireplaces in a revolt against oppression.
 How could you discuss epic movies and not list anything from the Star Wars or LOTR series? Anyway, Revenge of the Sith is my all-time favorite movie, epic or otherwise. I'm still surprised at how much the Star Wars prequels are hated... HATED. I think they're fantastic and taken as a whole, the saga is easily one of the finest. |

I went for "other" the film being "Ben Hur". Spartacus would be a close second. Ironically, I don't really go for "Braveheart", I don't appreciate the graphic blood and gore of the modern movie. The great Alfred Hitchcock demonstrated how you could make a good thriller without the need for graphic illustration.

Sticking strictly to your list I would have to say Gladiator,but after seeing 300 4 times in the theaters and literally drooling over the upcoming dvd release I would have to say it's a very close second.

Saving Private Ryan is my most epic movie. Its not like all 300 or Gladiator like, but i do believe it is EPIC and you feel like your part of something greater in the movie. Besides the epic cast of actors makes it great on its own...im not going to list them but there are literally more than a dozen AAA actors in it. Interesting poll....From the ones I've seen:
Troy : a decent movie, I liked it much more than the critic which panned it. I hate Orlando Bloom in that movie and Pitt is too much of a "celeb-Achilles" but O'Toole as King gives a lot of seriousness to this movie.
The Last Samurai: Very good movie, I actually love it, even though I have to rcognize a few flaws, the biggest one being that it's kind of diffcult to swallow the idea that a group of SAMURAIS could almost be LEAD by an american soldier, and that he happens to be the lone survivor in the final battle ... but full of atmosphere, NO CGI (there you have another proof that you CAN make big movies withoput using CGI for everything) and magic...
300: haven't seen it. The fact that is a cgi-fest scares me away from it.
Kingdom of Heaven: Orlando Bloom makes for an awful hero, no character, and suddenly he turns from simple farmer to the best military strategist ever... Salahadin has character, but Bloom lacks it... It's a shame the little time Jeremy Irons and Neeson have on-screen, for the take all the screen when they appear...
Gladiator: Good movie, at times it's only a fight movie with no story, no substance, but it's entertaining and well done... Some CGI scenes are so phony and fake it's not forgiveable (the first pan over Rome is ludicrous, you can SEE that it's a CGI effect)... Good, could've been better.
Spartacus: I'm one of the few who thinks this is Kubrick's worst movie alongside EYES WIDE SHUT.... Douglas slave has no character, that's no hero one can rally behind.... Peter Ustinov EATS him alive, that was THE actor...
The 13th Warrior: irrelevant little entertaining movie... actually, much better than I expected/...
The vikings : if it's the one with Kirk Douglas, well, it's kind of atrocious... but we can forgive its flaws, as it's an old movie in an era where some things were not there yet and when cinema was still coming out of the theater womb..... the vikings are too polite, everything phony...but entertaining, somewhat..
Braveheart: THE BEST. Clothes, story, acting, the era-investigation, you can see a lot of reseacrh went into the clothing, all the aspect that make you submerge in that era... Yes, the story of William Weallace may not be as the movie shos us,. but who cares, the movie tells a story and does it wonderfully,... fantastic and Mel Gibson's best.
There's a lot of other movies that should be on the list, but it's decent nevertheless... and entertaining... like some of these movies... -------------

I'll go with Star Wars - especially the old ones (so I've gone with 'others'). 'Spartacus' and 'The Vikings' are pretty nice epic movies too as is 'Braveheart'. And don't forget 'Jason and the Argonauts' and 'Clash of the Titans'. 'Kingdom of Heaven' is okay, even though Orlando Bloom just can't act. I don't know if Mel Gibson's and Kenneth Brannagh's versions of 'Hamlet' count as epics, but if they do, I'd recommend them too. Oh, and there's also 'Ben-Hur'. I guess 'Lord of the Rings' would belong here too. They're okay, although I was disappointed a bit with the third and second ones. Oh, and does 'Conan the Barbarian' count? How about 'The Neverending Story'? 'Willow'?
'Troy' on the other hand is terrible. One of the worst films I've ever seen. The last Samurai has it's moments, but is generally silly. If the Matrix movies count as epics too, then the first one's okay, but the two other ones are quite terrible.

Braveheart was utterly terrible from the historical perspective. For instance, the Scots were not dressed in rags and living in mud hovels. They lived similarly to everyone else in Europe. And I've read that in the one hundred years prior to this war, it had been relatively peaceful between Scotland and England (the film mentions "one hundred years of oppression"). Although The Last Samurai takes a few liberties with history, it does so in a realistic manner. We see the faults and the nice parts of the samurai way of life (instead of thoughtless glorification of the non-English, as in Braveheart...and The Patriot. Mel Gibson just seems to hate the Britons.), and a real sense of the effects of the West's intrusion into Japan (warts and all). I liked Gladiator and Spartacus, but then who didn't? No complaints there. |

Another glaring factual error is the big battle scene in the movie.Historically it is called "The Battle of Sterling Bridge".and one of the reasons the Scots won it is because the English were on one side of the river and the Scots on the other.The English were crossing 1-2 thousand men at a time and instead of being "honorable" and letting the troops cross and marshal their forces the Scots cut them down when they crossed and the rest of the English forces looked on in horror.After witnessing the slaughter the remaining English forces fled to Sterling Castle.
Never saw a bridge or anything about it in the film,the battle was fought on a big,open plain. ------------- |

T, see 300. It comes out on DVD tomorrow. Yes, it's full of CGI, and in some places it's quite obvious, but it literally looks like Miller's graphic novel come to life (same thing for Miller's SIn City).

Very good movie.... all about a man's struggle to survive.... very well set in mayan time ... great costume reseacrh... great suspense.... a little bit of gore (not Al) as Mel seems to love since The Passion... I really recommend it...
I guess I'll have to see 300.... So many prog people can't be so wrong...
.... I just hope it's not cgi-per-cgi's sake......I agree that LOTR are epic movies... and quite THE epic movies at that... though the dialogues (specially in THE RETURN) fall in the cheesy side... -------------

^ Keep in mind many of the dialogues are word for word (or close to it) out of the books, and many of them are hailed as emotional turning points, but to each his own. And yes, you have to see 300.
Has anyone seen the clip of Apocalypto where they changed the subtitles to reflect Gibson's drunken anti-Semitism, such as the priest declaring the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world? Hilarious.
