I prefer Asia,....I have the first or the only album in studio of Gtr,...the sound was too noisy imo and the high tone , of the voice of Max Bacon is good for a pop or aor ,but not for compete with singers like john wetton...jonathan Mover is a good drummer but not like carl palmer,in GTR the influence of Steve Hackett was little except in Hackett to bits that is a cover with more speed and stronger of one song of his album please dont touch-......the first album of Asia was commercial but with the good voice and good play of bass of Wetton, the good guitars and drums and with not too excessive sweet songs like GTR Songs

I never knew what the letters GTR actually stood for. Maybe someone can enlightnen us ? GTR was a 'supergroup' that was formed in the late 80's by Steve's Howe & Hackett. Whilst the album and a single charted in the USA & UK, they didn't have the same success as Asia. Whilst the GTR album has one or two good tunes ie. 'When The Heart Rules The Mind' , 'The Hunter' & the two Steve's solo tracks, the rest leaves a lot to be desired. I actually liked Max Bacon's vox on the album. The thing that I found most annoying was Steve Hackett's guitar tone. Whilst it may have suited the lightweight Genesis sound, it sounded out of place on a rock album, which is what the GTR album essentially is.

Thanks
Needless to say that I haven't heard anything (knowingly) by GTR so I won't vote. However I do like Asia and have most of their studio albums. My only problem with Asia is listening to my Walkman. As I have it sorted by album alphabetically most of Asia's music comes in a fairly short spell. Never mind eh.

GTR: simply thought it was shorthand for 'guitar(s)' because of the presence of Hackett and Howe

That first Asia album was absolutely amazing. GTR's album, on the other hand was rather run-of-the mill except for the instrumentals that featured Howe and Hackett (Sketches in the Sun and Hackett to Bits.)
GTR had a greater need for a decent lyricist than almost any other '80's offering that I listened to.

The few Asia songs I heard were no where near as horrendous as the GTR tape I own.

Asia was aclassical Supergroup, noot the best they all could (too many cooks in the kitchen ruin the soup) do but with some good moments.
GTR was the worst disappointment, what a terrible album, if you listen Hackett and Howe in the same band you expect wonders...at least some good solos, but in this album they gave nothing.

I'd have to agree with this assessment. Asia's first album, while much more mainstream than anything you would expect from those guys (well, except Downes), was a very high quality and influential offering. GTR's album, on the other hand, was mediocre at best except for the two instrumentals, but did have the luck to score a moderately successful single.

Where is the "I hate both" option ?
Seriously, I never understood why Asia was dubbed prog in the first place (except for the musicans' previous bands) while Saga is listed here as prog-related (and they are way more prog than Asia ever was).
I remember the first time I listened to Asia's debut (sometime in the 90's) and I thought "That's it ? THIS is the mighty Asia ?"
I find the album crappy and cheesy at best, such a heresy considering the quality and credentials of all musicians involved.
And I'd rather not even say a word about GTR...

I have a fantasy where all recordings of these two two groups are "accidentally" destroyed.

I agree on GTR that should never have happened and is best leaved untouched, unheare, and beheaded, but Asia debut is really great if you look at it with open mind and expect a Journy/Boston/Foreigner type of stadium rock, great album.

Yeah, I do. I don't listen to them much any more, but they were much better than Asia.
