No, he's a soloist. He's sort of an isolated artist... can't think of
any other big artists he's jammed with. I may be wrong though.

My brother was telling me the other day that Satch got his start filling in for Brian Jones shortly after he died during the American leg of that year's Stones tour. Can anybody verify this?

He's jammed with Vai and Malmsteen to name but two... and I believe he taught Malmsteen amongst others.
Vinnie Moore is a kinda 2nd-rate Satriani... come to think of it, Moore is nowhere near as inventive. Tony McAlpine should appear on any list of "Gods" in this category, but they all share the same failing, with the exception of Vai; They can all play mind-scramblingly fast licks - and tend to, even where fast licks aren't appropriate. They're virtuosos for the sake of virtuosity, generally - although "Surfing With the Alien" has some great moments (title track, Satch's Boogie).
In his own right, Satriani is a guitar god. In the context of prog, he's alright - nothing truly boundary pushing except in playing technique, but all these guitarists (with the exception of Vai ) quickly become mind-numbingly boring and cliched, as they over-use the techniques.

"Eh. Alright." Joe can play his scales, but he lacks originality. Actually, he may not have any at this point!

I've only heard 'Not of this Earth' and 'Surfing with the alien' neither of which I really liked. There's no doubting the mans skill, but NOTE sounded mostly like elevator muzac to me, and SWTA just irritated me. I'm not a big fan of guitar heroes. I know Joe Satriani is not really a speed guitarist unless the music warrents it; he's more innovative than the likes of Malmsteen IMO, but frankly the lot of them bore me.
I'd rather listen to a guitarist who, I think, takes the music more seriously, and is less obsessed with showing how techinically brilliant they are for the sake of it.

Yes. He did play with Deep Purple for a while, before they hired Steve Morse. Surfing with the Alien was a good album, but after that he's been just boring. I wish they would finally give him his Grammy Award, so he could move on and do something new and interesting again.

I'm sure somebody will correct> The story I'm told is Steve Vai, while with Zappa (or just after), decided to improve his guitarwork and ended with the Satriani the guitar teacher. Apparently Satriani's reputation then spread as the master shredder. As far as I've discovered the guy only looks up to is Allan Holdsworth (there is at least one long interview by Satriani of Holdsworth in 80's guitar magazines); ironically I feel the worst Holdsworth or Satriani recording is the one they did together IMHO, Radio Free Albumuth (on a Stu Hamm album of the same name). Personally, I find little to hold my attention across a number of Satriani albums (Surfing With The Alien having its moments). As I've said elsewhere, somebody might be the best musician in the world but without a decent set of tunes/compositions, that musician will keep the musos only happy and the rest of us bored. This tends to be true with other highly skilled/technically able shredders - however, when they do covers then watch out for fireworks! For instance, I've tried 5 Yngwie Malmsteen albums, and find his covers album Inspirations is way ahead, probably because he is playing some great tunes. The pretentiously titled The Infinite Steve Vai: An Anthology, (you might guess a compilation of Vai's recordings) is also one of those albums which highs of technically ability, and lows in tunes and arrangements - I challenge you sit through it in one sitting.
Satriani did take the lead guitar vacancy temporarily in Deep Purple , just before Steve Morse took up the poison challace. I eventually laid my ears on a 20 minute boot - it was so badly mixed that every time Jon Lord played any keys, Satriani was swamped out - however, when Joe did get through the wash, he sounded his own man and fitted the task well.

He's better than the shredders Malmsteen and Vai (his former student I believe) ... but I sold both Satriani albums I owned ... and left a concert festival headlined by Jethro Tull ... just before G3 (Vai, Satriani and Eric Johnson) came on ...

I have a few of his albums and he is definitely a smoking guitar player. I picked up his latest album just before Christmas and it is right up there with Surfing With The Alien I l also grabbed the G3 album with Ywingie and Steve Vai and he is by far the most creative and accessible of the three. My vote went to # 2 cool rock grooves.

I actually think Stach is the most listenable of all the "guitar
virtuosos", he's certainly less of a show off than Vai, IMO. Plus I
think he's a much better writer of melodies.

Satriani is great. I think he's the most listenable of the guitar virtuosos, like Forgotten Son said... Strange Beautiful Music is the first guitar virtuoso album I ever bought, but Surfing with the Alien is the best, at least from what I've heard so far. I agree that he does get boring sometimes, and I prefer Yngwie, MacAlpine, Vai, etc. over him, but he's still cool. I'm hoping to see him live next month, and if I have a good time then maybe I'll pick up his new album...

He is worthy of being deemed a "guitar god," sure, but when you get past his ability and past innovation, his songs and albums aren't very consistent, nor are they really musical masterpieces (maybe with a few exceptions). Most of his material is very straightforward, and that gets tiring for me. I'll give him "cool rock grooves."

That's somewhat confusing - you're saying that he's the most listenable guitar virtuoso, but then you say that you prefer the others over him.

I meant that out of the guitar virtuosos... more specifically out of hard rock/metal... I think Satriani is the most accessible or beginer friendly for people just getting into that kind of music because his style is not as extreme as guys like Vai and Yngwie but more catchy than guys like MacAlpine (does that make more sense?).
5 Favorite shred albums in terms of shred:
Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force - (self entitled debut) Yngwie J. Malmsteen - Trilogy Tony MacAlpine - Maximum Security Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien Cacophony - Speed Metal Symphony

Nice list! On my website I used to have "Metal Shred" as a category - I just added "Shred" as a rock category. I will add a page which lists albums from those two genres ... So we can determine the best shred album.
