I just want to say that I think these two albums don't get enough respect. Maybe they are different and maybe they lack some elements that can be found in other releases, but I've just heard them and I'm thinking that most of the bad ratings are caused by the presence of Bayley who, I have to agree, has a weak voice (specially in quieter moments).... But I think the music is great and I'll give XFACTOR a 5 and VIRTUAL a 4 or a 3..... Am I wrong? Am I a fanboy or something? EmbarrassedBig%20smile... If so, I'm a lousy fanboy, for I don't like PIECE OF MIND....What do you think?

Also, have you noticed that 80% of the threads in this prog-related lounge are about Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and The Doors? LOL

Well, T, it appears we agree on something yet again ; Piece of Mind probably is one of my least favorite Dickinson era album, saved by songs like Where Eagles Dare, The Trooper, Still Life (my favorite from Murray ever) and To Tame a Land.  The rest I don't care for, the album sounds... I don't know, too relaxed, maybe ?  I mean, Revelations is among my least favorite Maiden songs ever, like Flight of Icarus, Sun and Steel and Quest for Fire (Die with your Boots on is ok)...

Back to our sheeps...

Musically, the Bailey albums are strong, of that there is no doubt.  Traces of the style they did on those two albums are still present to this day, yet now it is revered instead of bashed upon because Dickinson (and Smith) is there to upgrade the songs with his magnificent voice.  I wouldn't go as far as giving X Factor stars (four at the most) and Virtual XI 3.5 stars at the most.

And about the percentage of the polls in prog-related on Zeppelin, Doors and Maiden, I think it only goes to show how much those bands are appreciated by prog fans and are really worthy of addition onto this site.  Just my opinion though.

Bayley sang in a band called Wolfsbane, sort of NWOBHM style. His voice was ok and it fit that band very well. On the Iron Maiden albums his vocals were extremely dull. Not sure who is to blame here. Vocalist, songwriter, or producer. Most people thought the album should have been better, people familiar with Blaze Baily felt he was poorly utilized. Bayley recorded a few albums after his time in Maiden that were said to be better than his Maiden output.

This was the case with me too, but something happened when I heard Bruce play it on his solo tour in 2002, and since that day it's been one of my biggest Maiden favorites. Today I can't see why I disliked it at first, it's a true masterpiece if you ask me.

And yeah, The Blaze era albums don't usually get the respect they deserve.

There is good stuff on XFACTOR  especially ''the sign of the cross''  but after a while there is some kind of sameness the whole album.
