Silly question maybe, but did you check if it's even connected to your sound card? I ran into that once - a small, hairthin cable connecting the two was not installed....

I have the same problem with my PC but it's too difficult to fix due to the position of the connections on the motherboard.

Check your sound setup in Control Panel, it could be muted.
Have you checked that the headphones work?

This is more than often the case - or it is the AUDIO port on the motherboard, however some of the newer motherboards do not have a front headphone connection point.

If you open your case, see if the audio cables from the front panels are connected to a point on the motherboard.

There's usually two grey cables, one for 'mic' and one for 'line out/headphones'. If they're not connected, you need to connect them to something like 'fp audio', a bunch of pins on the motherboard. You really need to look into the motherboard manual to get them connected the right way. On some motherboards, you have to remove some jumpers from the 'fp audio' to connect the cables.
