Alex Lifeson of Rush. The Rush in Rio DVD set was a nice reminder of this guys sense of humor. And every time I have ever heard him on Rockline, he's always joking around.

Who would you vote for?

Zappas probably, but Lifeson has a great sense of humour. I always thought Fish was quite funny too, when he wasn't whinging about relationshiop breakdowns

Lets not forget Mr Wakemen too. He's always cracking jokes..some better than others.. I like his radio show on Planet Rock, he's quite a good humoured and lively presenter.

Jon Anderson

His jokes/sense of humor is the corniest of all corniest, but you will still get a good laugh out of them no matter how many times you hear them.  As corny as he seems, you know that he just really means to be a sweet person.  Some good ones are on the Yes Symphonic, Yes Years, and Songs From Tsongas DVDs.

Hehe yeah i got Yes Symphonic so i know what you mean and i allmost feelt sad for him since he yust wana be a sweet person but obvuiulsy cant come up with a good joke no mather how hard he tryed.

Zappa was very fun in the begining of his carear but the longer it whent on he started to try to hard and spoiled it all, and in the end whent over the edge.

Well i vote for Ian Anderson i seen some old shows with him and that guy realy know how to entertain and bring on a hell of a show and i realy like his humor. Thumbs%20Up

And i know hes not very prog but dont forget Keith Moon, the funnies rock dude outside of prog. LOL

Devin Townsend is funny also. I don't know who is "funniest" all matter of taste  obviously.

Indeed. A lot of his music I didn't find too funny, but as a person I think he was hillarious. I'm only one chapter into "The Real Frank Zappa Book" and I've already been in hysterics at least 10 times. LOL

I love Mikael Akerfeldts sense of humor, although he may not be the funniest of them all (maybe Zappa).  But Mikael does a great job of entertaining the crowd between songs.  I've seen videos of things like Death Metal vocal lessons during concerts to "guess the song" competitions with some great jokes thrown in.

Peter Gabriel - his droll humour is so dry - it's perfect for Prog.

Alex Lifeson. Defining moment - some 25 plus years ago at the Junos (canadian grammy equivalent) - He & Kim Mitchell were presenting the nominees for best classical recording, when they came to Liona Boyd, Kim said how good he thought she was. Alex replied that , yes, she was so good that she could blow them both with one arm tied behind her back Wink

P.S. Kim - "hey you can't say that on national television"!

Portnoy cracks me up; but, I don't care for the overuse of the profanity (especially the 'F' bomb).

^ That's a classic LOL

I was going to say Alex as well, but for an interview I saw once, I think on the Rush in Rio DVD (I only watch the add-ons once, focus on the actual performance). He was talking about Geddy: "He's playing bass with his left hand, keyboards with his right, using his feet for the bass and synth pedals, and he sings to it as well. He's only got one limb left to play with, and I'm not sure I want to see him play with that...."

The guy is my favourite in this thread, because he makes jokes like that every once in a while and still doesn't get the image of a joker, like e.g. Zappa does.

I have to nominate Rick Wakeman and Bill Bruford. I have an episode of 'Rock Family Trees' with both of those interviewed and their reminiscences are wonderfully amusing. Bill Bruford's humour is very dry and Rick's delivery of anecdotes is second to none in the prog world, imho.LOL

Posted By: The Whistler

Really? Bruford? Huh. Never woulda thunk it.

Wakeman I've known from tidbits of interviews I've read (and the use of a paintroll for keyboard plaing on Top 'o the Pops with the Strawbs).

Without a doubt Mani Neumeier, drummer of Guru Guru (who are by the way one of the most humoresque bands in prog. Just listen to albums like "Mani und seine Freunde", "Tango Fango" or "Mani in Germani").
Fantastic drummer too, by the way!

Have you ever seen Lifeson's on stage antics? I remember during the TFE Tour, he had a lifesize Pamela Lee Anderson cutout he would flirt with all concert long.

My vote goes for Emerson ... when he's playing live, he's just too amusing.

As for actual humor: zappa, lifeson, or wakeman.

Excerpt from an interview of Alex by Alex dated May 13, 2007.

Let me begin by saying how lovely it is to see you.
Yes, I know, and it's terrific to see you too.

I dunno, but did you get a haircut or something because, wow!
I trimmed my ears last week, maybe that? It makes a big difference.

Yes.
...
Um.

Tell me, what goes on behind those eyes, deep in your brain, out the back of your head and down your leg, around the corner and so on?
What? LOL... did I actually say LOL? I promised I'd never do that.

No, it's okay, you just typed it. Tell us a little about how you prepare for one of your lively concerts, just the parts while you're awake.
Well, it takes hours of intense thinking and questioning... yes, questioning why you're thinking so intensely so intensely. It's like a giant circular circle or a snake that's been man-made into a circle-like circle snake-but definitely not like a flying shark snake, which is usually on days off.
From there it just gets intense.

I see. Fascinating. As are your shoes! They are absolutely to die for. Prada?
Pravda, actually. I bought them in Prague from a street vendor who was having a closing out sale on Soviet footwear. Placing the heel on the front of the shoe was revolutionary.

How Bohemian. LOL.
LOL too.

So, Alexandar, let's go deep for a moment and travel back to May 12. It's 7 am and you're getting up. You walk down the hall, pass a mirror, glance fleetingly. You arrive in the kitchen to the prospect of a coffee. You have the coffee, shake your head and smile, you think, 'this is a good coffee day' when suddenly you stub your toe, drop the coffee cup, spill scorching hot coffee on your hot pants, slip on the wet floor, go flying, smash a vase when you crush the coffee table and coffee break the door off the dishwasher and totally break all the coffee cups ever. What was it you saw in the mirror? What?
Where do you get all this stuff? That is amazing. Your research department is to be commended. I'm just blown away that you have all that. It's as if you were there. No really, that's something else.

The mirror, Alex. The mirror.
Huh? The mirror? What mirror? I didn't look into a mirror.

The... mirror... Alex.
No really. There was no mirror. I glanced out the window.

What the, no, I, wait...
You're SOL, buddy

Why you SOB!
Hey.FU!

ICUP!!
SO?!

Getting back to something I'd like to explore with you. I've watched ice melt and seen the wind die, the Leafs blow, I've been a wailin' on the high seas. If you could be a friendly insect, what would you be, and not hairy or anything?
I've always had a hard time answering that question. There are so many insects, maybe hundreds, and really, how do you choose? What are the criterion? It's not easy, for sure. Maybe a salamander.

You mean like Sal, a man, 'der? LOL again.
FU.

Continuing on that train of thought for a moment, ask yourself this: where did I leave my keys, you idiot?
In the car at the gas station while you were filling up an hour ago and you went in to get a coffee and... oh oh.

If you could go back in time to just that last, say, hour and a half, what would you do differently?
Quit drinking coffee.

I couldn't do that. I'd go crazy and I don't even like coffee but no one can make me quit if I don't want to, though I'm not saying I don't want to or quit wanting to or just plain wanting to quit.
Exactly. I've been saying that for years and I'm finally relieved to know other serious, smart in brain people are making the think in headvoice ideas too. It's time to take a coffee stand and deciding stuff to make the world a faster place to live in.

Well, we seem to have run out of time. I've quite enjoyed our conversation, as usual, and would leave you with this thought to ponder... but don't ponder too long, and when I say 'ponder,' I don't mean, like, PONDER, just think about it with your eyebrows scrunched up and like you're pondering around. Okay then, what is the absolutely best day of your life?
Next week.

Bold and brilliant! It's been a great pleasure. Thank you.
Charmed, I'm sure.
