How do I create a poll in the non-prog forum?
Anyway, two of my favourite rock epics are Zep's 'Kashmir' & Rainbow's 'Stargazer'! I can't seperate them but which do you prefer?

Ah... the two Egyptian sounding songs!
I'm going to vote Stargazer, because Ronnie James Dio has a badass voice.

I vote Stargazer, probably due to overexposure to Kashmir, and because Dio sings, and because Blackmore plays, Powell slams, Bain too...
I love Led Zep though...

Kashmir, by a country mile, for me.
Rainbow did not age well for me (I stopped listening to them before I was out of my teens), but I remain a major Zep fan. I think they had more musical depth and were heavy rock pioneers. Rainbow seemed to be mainly about hormones/testosterone, and following an established "template." (They were very good at what they did, though.)

I remember worshipping Blackmore/Rainbow/Purple for about 6 months while in my teens. Likewise Frank Marino. Just got old for me. Zeppelin's music never stood still, always evolving, took musical risks other bands of the era couldn't or wouldn't take. Not all their long shots paid off, but the ones that did -- e.g. Kashmir -- made them legends to this day. I recall *hating* that song for quite a while, but only because I wasn't expecting it and therefore couldn't appreciate it.

Heh, yeah...looks like this one is "Stargazer" to my "Kashmir."
I still go with "Stargazer," for the live version, which rips the living sh*t outta any too-pretentious-for-its-own-good classic metal song, 'cause Blackmore's soloing is, quite literally, inhuman. It scares me.

Oh, I like how all the Led Zep guys are giving their well-thought out analysis of the songs, or just simply saying "Kashmir," and all the Rainbow dudes are saying "Dio's awesome" and the like.

A country-mile is too short: Kashmir by a light-year! Switching time-signatures (though it was predominantly 3/4 throughout), using orchestral arrangements to give that full Arabesque sound, using the flanger effect on the drums in the last 90 seconds of the song - it truly stands the test of time! It is, hands down, the best song Zeppelin ever recorded (IMHO)...

I was hooked on Stargazer as a kid. It is good, but Kashmir gets my vote.
If I hear Stargazer these days, I find myself yawning at all the Dio cliches in the lyrics; towers of stone, rainbows, wizards etc..

Well...i'm gonna tell you somthing that DP fans may fell angry.....but...it's true....two tracks with eastern musical structures....but Kashmir was released in 1975 and was created in mid 1974....and since first Zep album we can find tracks with easter musical mixtures like Black Mountain side......Stargazer appeared in 1976-77 in Rainbow Rising album.....and hipnotic riff...like kashmir....yeas...i mean as always Blackmore pick up some somedody else's musical ideas....for example look tha last part of stargazer....and then listen last part of Kashmir....
Another Zep influence

Led Zep were one of the worst proponents of plaigarism ! 'Whole lotta love' just for starters!
Whilst I don't have any particular preference between the two songs, Blackmore steals his own solo from 'Stormbringer' . It's almost identical to the one he uses in Stargazer.

For me it's Stargazer.
kashmir is rocking, and has quite a Dose of wonderous moment's, but Stargazer is the ultimate hardrock epic, only few songs come close in really exciting me that much, a selection of those include Sleepwalkers from VDGG, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and Grendel by Marillion, and that's it, total entrancement and when it's on, no need to speak to me, for than I'm listening with all my senses.
one of the best songs ever created is Rainbows Stargazer, and Kashmir is just one of many great songs.

Kashmir reminds me of classical composition Bolero. It builds up, it keeps tension, it keeps flowing, it explodes. And trust me when i say that i had my fair share of Rainbow when i was a heavy metal kid. Zeppelin all the way.

They're both great tracks, though I have a personal preference for "Stargazer". However, I don't understand those who speak of plagiarism... "Stargazer" doesn't really sound anything like "Kashmir" - all they have in common is the length and epic scope, and perhaps that Oriental-inspired vibe. That's all, IMHO. If you really want a song that's clearly influenced by "Kashmir", I'd say, listen to Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers".

Let's see...i like "Stargazer" so much, it rocks, its great...but as always i suspect about Blackmore...in some point of his career time he was lost...i'm thinking in his personal influences and inspiration, muses, whatever....as musician and he begun to attend some elements of 1st position bands...emulating, whatever...to join the mainstream...and the mix rock and ethnic, mystic it's and example....i think he needed new ideas to leave DP...look again the hipnotic riff....the last part with G and A based scale like Kashmir...well the hipnotic riff is in E and Kashmir in D but i'm talkin about big structures.....and the chorus.....A minor to G in Stargazer ("...in the heat and the rain...") and Kashmir G minor to A. ("...All I see turns to brown...") ....more than one
I like stargazer but kasmir was unique in 70's

Perhaps Kashmir is repetitive..but for me is hipnotic.......there are famous repetitives themes in classic music like Bolero of Ravel..............that for me is hipnotic,..or like a sexual act

Kashmir 1 Stargazer 0
I would rather prefer Kashmir although both classics I don't really like them. I choose Kashmir cause Plant's voice is great, in the other hand Stargazer's drumming is great although Dio's voice is rubish.

Stargazer!! I dont think it sounds like Kashmir at all. Thats a bit like saying that Powerslave sounds like Kashmir because of its eastern sound. Dont forget that there were enough songs who sounded eastern before Kashmir come along. Deep Purple The Mule for instance.
