Just curious what instrument(s) any of you proggers play relatively proficient. By proficient, I mean where you can sit down and do chord progressions and may have at least played with some friend(s) if not in a band.
I'll start off by saying I'm a guitar guy (but I love to listen to the keyboards and mellotrons and flutes). I play electric/accoustic and also the bass guitar but I don't consider myself good enough to do anything more than just jam with friends or with the local church band. I'm always interested in hearing good prog with some cool bass lines

I play the drums. As I lacked proper education for it in the first years, I'm actuall;y self-taught. Later I've studied more but in general I'm a 99% selftaught drummer....I've received praises for originality and invention, though if you ask me to play jazz in difficult time signatures I'll probably ask for a glass of water...
By the way, my first band was an atrocious Nirvana-cover band (and that was the good part) which then turned into a weird alternative-punk thing (  ) but near the end became somewhat of a decent hard-rock band, though with a complete mess of a style (I don't have any idea what the hell we played) and two musicians who really sucked: the guitar player (he had good ideas but awful technique) and the singer (well, he had...he was friendly)....Then the bassist and me joined a fantastic guitar player and formed a trio and we actually played original songs, very proggy, like a mix between powermetal and prog-rock, instrumental-only. Then me and the bassist had our own project which was mostly experimantal (not only the music but HOW we achieved it, through experimentation with things that enhance your mind, if you know what I'm saying) and then... well, the bass player left my country, and soon I came. And I'm band-less since.... -------------

you should have made it so everyone can pick multiple instruments.

Bass since I was in high school... I can't play keyboards and guitar, although I own both - I know where the notes are, it's just my fingers won't listen to where my brain is telling them to go.
I use Reason to compose and a cheap DAW to overdub the simplistic keys & guitar that my tone-deaf fingers can manage play. ------------- What? |

| Been playing bass for about 1 1/2 years...been playing piano for 6...and I can strum a few chords and play a few songs on guitar....but I really would like to play the pipe organ for my church as well as a wind instrument or become good at acoustic guitar stuff...oh and I also want to play the drums, I can sort of play okay but its been awhile since I've had access to a drum set. |

6 and 12 string guitar, bass (fretted, only played fretless once), piano/keys, alto/tenor/bari (never played soprano) sax, recorder, and I rock a money cowbell (Bruce would be proud). I love to play drums, but I wouldn't call myself proficient, just competent. Self-taught guitarist for nearly 4 years now. I love the instrument and all it has to offer, lately I've been playing a lot more acoustic. I focus almost entirely on rhythm guitar (lead just isn't my cup of tea).I went through the cycle of piano lessons when I was much younger, but I never put forth enough effort to learn the instrument (which I now regret).
The violin is very appealing to me, and it is something I would love to pick up. ------------- When the world is sick Can't no one be well But I dreamt we were all beautiful and strong

I play guitar pretty well (both 6 and 12 string), and keyboards fairly well. I can read sheet music, but not in "real time".
I also can fake my way around a bass guitar. |

Well, I voted for Tuba because I am proficient on it and it wouldn't get any other votes, BUT in reality I play many instruments and am proficient on a few: Guitars (acoustic, electric, classical) Bass Guitar Tuba Vocals Those are what I'm what you could say proficient at, although not a master on any of them. I've taken lessons though for all of them though, and by proficient I mean I can play almost whatever I want really. Just not the professional stuff. I'm hoping to learn flute sometime soon. That would be fun. |

Proficient in Trumpet - I have been playing for almost 5 years now, and take part in Marching Band, Jazz band, concert band, and musical pit orchestras. I also have taken (and still take) lessons.
A bit of Piano - I took lessons for two years, but couldn't fit it in with my Marching Band schedule. I wish I could still take lessons. Self-Taught at Guitar - Not very good at all! I'd like to get lessons to learn the proper techniques and such, but I haven't got the time with my trumpet playing. I'm also taking music theory classes this year, and hope to get a dual major in college involving music (and computer science). So, yes, I'm a friggin' huge band and music nerd :D Oh, by the way, hi everyone! First post!

| The first instrument I learned to play was the saxophone (tenor is the best!). Even though I don't actually have one anymore and haven't played one in almost four years, it's still my favorite (I'm saving up to buy one). For about the past five years or so I've been playing the guitar and I have three of them. And no sax. Go figure. |

Have studied the piano for 6 years and after this tought myself to play guitar. After music-school piano studies, I quit playing the instrument for a while and focused on the guitar but now I enjoy playing piano as well as my electric and acoustic guitar. Voted for guitar though, because it's my 'main' instrument. Would like to learn playing a LOT of instruments, but well, can't do everything I guess...but aah, how I would like to play cello... |

Bass has lately taken over the position of a main instrument from guitar, and I can play some drums too, but I don't own a kit (yet). I've been playing guitar for like six years and bass for the same time occasionally in music stores and in school, until about a year ago I finally bought one from a friend. Most people with about a year or two experience are just as good as me, I've never really cared about practicing, I've just played stuff I'm able to at the moment. |

My main insturment is the bass guitar, but I'm also attempting the
piano, little bit of drums, and maybe someday I'll master the
orchestral bass as well! The only instrument I didn't care too
much for was the guitar. For somereason my fingers don't move in
that direction.

Drums first and foremost. I'm no Neil Peart, but I can hold my own quite well. As a matter of fact, I played off the cuff "Carry On Your Wayward Son" just the other day with a few good musicians. I was quite impressed at what I remembered, changes and all.
I also mess around with the acoustic and keyboards. -------------

I used to play guitar, both acoustic and electric. But I haven't played in the last few years (ended up emigrating without instrument). I also played the recorder a bit.

I play alto saxophone, a little bit of keyboard. A few years ago i also played clarinet. I haven't really tried singing but it looks like the band i'm starting up soon will have me on vocals  . Good thing it will have lots of black metal influences

I mostly play guitar, but I played first chair trombone in highschool. What I learned then set me up for a head start with guitar. I also play bass, but not as well as guitar. I consider my guitar playing abilities to be more than proficient...never played a gig, but everyone i've played with has told me I was good...one guy said 'he'd kill to be able to play like me'. One time I played with my father's buddy and he told me I was good. I've only been playing for 6 years, but like I said, I had somewhat of a musical background...a head start. I'm a lead guy, so I specialize in scales, though I know more than enough chords to get by! ------------- for those about to prog, we salute you. |
