Philippe, an eminent PA member, came at home recently and had the opportunity to listen to my system.
(BTW, there has been a lot of upgrades since your venue, Philippe). How did you find my sound, Philippe (compared to Mr Everybody (crappy) system)?

Nice to see that you still think you have the only "worthy" system on the planet Oliver.

My system is very modest, compared to others.
But indeed it's awesome, compared to what everybody has.
There's absolutely no insult here. It's a very sad thing that most people don't listen to music at home anymore and it's mostly due to digital.
I'm also very sad for the young generations who grow up with bad music and bad sound (sub-digital), and it goes together. That's why i keep on trying to convince evrybody that good Hifi works and is a fantastic source of musical pleasure. I want to share that.

^ maybe more people would listen to you if you didn't insult them to begin with (by calling their system "crappy")?

I don't see why people should feel insulted. Unless one identifies himself with an object, for instance.
I can't help myself, cause that's what it is.

That's funny - I consider my system "awesome" ( and it is) and yet you insulted that! And I know for sure that you didn't know some of my kit. Amazing ability - to hear and trash by telepathy.

Generally speaking I’ve used to listen to music on truly imperfect systems (Sony…)…well, I’m not a technician about hi-fi equipements but I’m a musician and it’s clear that I highly appreciated experimentating old good sounds with Olivier “top class” installation. The basic idea is that “architectural”, sophisticated music, complex sound textures need too be broadcasted into a well made acoustic “gallery”. The musical environement provided by the sound system is absolutely primordial. In conformity with my musical tastes (micro tonal experimentations, space rock, sound sculptures, layering organic ambiences…) I believe that music must be experienced “physically”. For this reason I particularly appreciate the possibility to detect all micro-changes, frequencies, simultaneous tones. It can become many more intense within a spherical ambience. After what I’ve heard I think that Olivier’s system can reproduce to perfection (and with a high volume) astonishing energetic textures. This is the real material for a deep, intense listening!
(sorry for my english)

It still has to be said that there are many, many combinations of kit that can produce "awesome" sounds. Not all of those will match Oliver's criteria.
There's always more than one way to skin a cat.

If you're talking about MP3, that's no, deafinetly!

Oliver - I certainly wasn't referring to MP3. Although, the premise would still apply to MP3 playback.
I, personally, don't think that mp3 has a place in hi-fi. It's fine for i-pods and computer playback but they're a country mile from hi-fi. (Here's where Mike steps in and damns me............again )

^ no, I simply refer to the thread that I created about that specific subject, and the test that was conducted.

So what are you talking about?

You're kidding me right?
What on earth do you think I'm talking about? It was put quite plainly in my earlier post, however, I'll re-iterate.
There are a myriad of different combinations that will produce a wonderful or awesome setup. No-one, no matter who you are, can hear all of the combinations - not even you. You need to realise that other people can also come up with a good hi-fi setup. One that, on paper, is far different to what you consider the paragon.

i rarely listen to other people's hi fi systems, no one i know is really interested, they have their dvd set-up and they're happy with that.
i have spent years and months getting a sound i enjoy from my system, and i'm amazed how some old records i dig out from time to time sound so good, better than i've ever heard them before! also my view of what a good system should sound like may differ from others - some like too much bass for instance.
i have the highest respect for Olivier's opinion and experience, and i'm sure sometimes forum members get the wrong impression from his style of writing, but if i went to listen to his system, though i am sure it sounds absolutely fantastic, i would have to come back home to mine and it wouldn't sound the same.
i haven't the money to make any further major upgrades in the near future, so to a degree ignorance is bliss.
i am not an expert but i know enough to advise others of the basics of getting good sound, though i would not call anyone's system crappy, i would just point out the deficiencies and advise how to improve the sound, i was a salesman for 12 years after all - diplomacy gains respect.

I'm sure most people don't get the wrong impression from Oliver - put quite painly - he's rude, patronising and disdainful. That's hardly necessary and rarely called for. What's wrong with stating an opinion with respect in mind? We're not all wrong!
I'm sure he has a fantastic setup but, many people are capable of putting together a good system - a fact which he seems reluctant to comprehend.

Not to disagree, but .... When I was still in high school ( about a century or two ago), I had an old stereo that had speakers with ONE speaker each. NO Tweeter, Mid Range or subwoofer or any other animal like sound sounding name. I wired these old Radio Shack Realistic car speakers (the plastic one you put on the top behind your rear seats) to give me 4 speakers. I then played a few AC/DC & Foghat LPs. And I kid you not, I still have not heard a better sounding guitar tone since. Of course, the bass was not exactly prominent, not the drums, but the guitars sounded like buzzsaws. But anyways, does anyone remember when Canadian speakers were considered reliably well built ?

Many guitar amps come with one membrane only ... usually one 12" or 15" membrane is quite enough, since the guitar tone contains no ultra-high frequencies you don't need a tweeter.
