Beauty = technique x emotion.
I enjoy DiMeola and Holdsworth from time to time, but they sound a bit too clinical to me. PAT METHENY is better, if he doesn't get too soppy.

technically speaking,
Adian Belew in Prog
Tom Morello (Rage against the Machine) in non-prog.
alternates:
Robert Fripp
Steve Vai (even though I don't like him musically)

Allan Holdsworth.... I don't think that there is a guitarist that can't compared with Allan.
Also, i think Jason Becker was an extraordinaire guitarist with excellent technic.
BUT i really like also the style of less-technical Mark Knopfler and Clem Clempson (You have to see 'Colosseum Lives').

Might I also nominate Albert Lee.

Satriani, Vai, Petrucci, Howe, Malmsteem.
Syd Barret?????? you're kidding me!!!!!
In the "guitar solos" of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn I only hear a great collection of noisy noise, hundreds of mistakes and errors, and the guitar is out of tune.....
------------- I like Tormato, so shoot me! Every person in the world can't think the same.

Clapton on The Beano album...(John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers featuring Eric)
Progwise I'd have to say the almighty Fripp and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez

My favorite guitar players are Steve Hackett, David Gilmour, Steve Howe, Andy Latimer, Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, Rory Gallagher, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ritchie Blackmore, Brian Setzer, Jimi Hendrix, Paco De Lucia, Paco Pena, Juan Martin, Sabicas, Julian Bream and Pepe Romero, to name a few
All these guitarists are very skilled and add an extra dimension with their personal flavor, they sound very distinctive and the focus is not on scale-acrobatics. It's hard to say who has the best technique because I am delighted about Brian Setzer who plays outstanding rock and roll but how many dare to say he's a better rock guitarist than Jimmy Page or Ritchie Blackmore .. ?

replace Michael Romeo with Sabicas (the Flamenco legend) and you are dead on.
But in prog, definitely the FRIPP.
I'm glad to see for once that people aren't catapulting Hackett to the top
------------- I am but a servant of the mighty Fripp, the sound of whose loins shall forever be upon the tongues of his followers.

I think some people dont know the meaning of technic I see names like Gilmour, Barret, Morello... you might like them, but they arent the greatest technical guitarist...
I must name Vai, he is technically perfect... yet I dont like his music, but when it comes to his technic... I cant argue

Pero, judging by your avatar (I think that's what it's called ) I would think you would throw Holdsworth in that list . Isn't "Gazeuse" like the greatest album ever! Oh, back on topic, I vote Allan Holdsworth for pure technique.
