In my holy quest for perfect guitar tone, I've come across what seems to be a useful pedal: boost. Now, the only problem is, I'm unsure of the proper definition. Anything I've come across pretty much resembles "lol it makes ur gee-tarr sound bigger!"

I think I have an idea. All across PT's 'In Absentia', the guitar is very... in your face. Like a wall of sound. The solo during 'The Sound of Muzak' is an example of this.

I'm not 100% sure though. If I'm wrong, please correct me! Smile

Yea, thats a crude way to put it, but thats about it.
They really just give the guitar a more overdriven sound.

These pedals increase the volume level of the signal, which not only causes the volume to go up but also adds distortion.

BTW: I'd suggest you try the good old tube screamer instead ... many guitarists swear by it. In addition to boosting the signal it adds its own distortion, which can sound quite nice if you want a really "creamy" lead sound.

I personally use a Boss DS-1 as a boost pedal through a Roland Cube 30. I set the gain on the amp on full, put the Distortion level on the DS-1 about 20 per cent, put the Level control on full, and Tone on zero, half or full, depending on what i'm playing. Does anyone else like to use the DS-1 as a gain boost for boosting amps in ultra high gain territory?

If you can't afford a Tube Screamer, try the Digitech Bad Monkey overdrive.
