Do any of you progheads out there know of other prog albums featuring harpsichord (even cameo appearances)? Outside of Focus, I am stumped. As for lute, same band , including Akkerman's early solo stuff ! Just goes to prove what a great prog band Focus was. They were my first proggy love! Yeah, love!

well... Steve Howe from Yes played Lute and Viehuela (yeah I totally butchered the spelling) on occasion
... we had quite a few named in my old Medieval Prog thread, but I can't remember most of them... I happen to love harpsichord in prog

Thanks for your input. You are right , harpsichord in prog would be damn good idea to look at , all those prog musicians should consider this amazing albeit complex instrument. Focus did very well with it on Hamburger Concerto .

Hey Thomas,WOBBLER uses it on their debut,as well it's on "Lumpy Gravy" by ZAPPA. It's used on AREKNAMES album, not sure which one. Some of the proto-prog bands like GRACIOUS and IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY use it as well.

Tull may have used harpsichord, but then it could have been a synth sound emulating a harpsichord.

ELP Still You Turn Me On. Keith played a harpischord live so I assume the one on the studio is also.

Didn't Rick Wakeman use a harpsichord on the Yes song Madrigal, and I think you can hear one right at the end of Turn of the Century.

Not quite progressive, but there was a completely classical Cd by a guitarist by the name of Yngwie Malmsteen that had a lot of harpsichord in it.
The Cd is called "Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E flat Minor Op. 1". Go listen to some samples of it maybe. It's all written like classical music, but with some electric guitars. It does have a lot of harpsichord in it though.

Rick Wakeman uses a really good electric harpsichord/piano. John Evans from Tull uses harpsichord on the Life is a Long Song EP, and Thick as a Brick. and there's an electric one in Songs From the Wood, so most likely in Heavy Horses and Stormwatch to.
As for lute, Martin Barre from Tull plays lute in Thick as a Brick and Songs from the Wood.

Long live the harpsichord!
I totally agree with many of the recommendations given above. In particular, Rick Wakeman's solos on "Siberian Khatru" and "The Prisoner" (on NO EARTHLY CONNECTION and on several Wakeman compilations) are superb. (They turned me on to actual baroque harpsichord music!)
In addition, there's some highly refined harpsichord playing on "Velvet Green" by Jethro Tull (a lovely mini-epic on their SONGS FROM THE WOOD album), on THE MATHEMATICIAN'S AIR DISPLAY by Pekka Pohjola and on Zappa's UNCLE MEAT (totally un-baroque but great fun).

Check out the song "La fabbricante d'angeli" on Le Orme's Contrappunti. Tony Pagliuca plays a muted harpiscord which sounds very similar to a lute. So, you have both things in a single number!

Newbies and others are recommended to use the local search engine, since many subjects have been covered since the founding of PA. I believe it is better to concentrate insights, info etc. on a subject to a single thread if possible , i.e. have some form of knowledge base concentrated at one place, rather than having it spread and the risk of missing something that might be useful.

I can't say I know anyone since Bach or Martin Luther that played a lute...although it is a cool instrument and should be used in prog. Harpsichord however if you dig is in a few PFM - Appena un po - Good harpsichord with flute. Beautiful song! ELP - Still You Turn Me On - I wish Keith would play more harpsichord, it sounds beautiful against the 12 string on this one. My stuff - when I come out with an album I hope to incorporate the harpsichord a lot...it is a very interesting instrument!

hey dick, do you go up to people in public and tell them to stop having their conversation because the topics are already covered on wikipedia, or because you had that same conversation with a friend a month ago and that they shouldve been there to hear it? ...i hope not (maybe you do)

Damn, all the Tull has been taken...unless there's some in the single "Strip Cartoon" that was tacked onto Too Old, but I could be remembering wrong.
Still, I can plug Keith Emerson's use of the harpsy-cord on ELP's first studio album.

For goodness sake, read what I wrote with care, because I do believe you miss the point. In fact it is an invitation to add your insights to a single thread, NOT TO STOP ANY FORM OF DISCUSSION, for the reasons given! What was written up a month ago on PA is still on public record (and indeed many threads date from much earlier), and can be read and can be added to. Let's concentrate the information not dilute it.

But you`ll notice they`re all unaccompanied except for the short intro at the beginning of Hamburger Concerto and Britannia off Tabernakel. I read a couple of articles back in the seventies and he said that it was hard to keep in tune which is why he only played brief unaccompanied lute sections while touring with Focus in the seventies.

- Dr. Z - "Three Parts to My Soul"
- Jacula - "Tardo Pede in Magiam Versus"
- Gracious - "Gracious!"
- Trace - "Birds"

He also sometimes used the real Harpsichord!
(For example: In a Glass House, Title Track, where in several parts he doubles the bassline with the harpsichord).

He also uses one (I don't know if it real or not) on Acquiring The Taste. I believe it is on the soft part of Wreck.

A harpsichord sound can also often be heard in Lacrymosa - Joy of the wrecked ship, but I believe it's a sample and not the real instrument.

The RMI he used live (and of course some places in the studio - like the "piano" chords on the down-part (forget what it's called) of close to the edge, plus all over 6 wives), but on siberian kathru it's a real one in the studio-verion, no doubt.
I'd also mention Banco del mutuo soccorso and Il revescio della medaglia, plus loads of other ita-prog-bands.
