What are they really for??

Apparently, Registry Cleaners are suppose to improve PC Performance, from slowness, crashes and sluggish performance.

If they do which ones work best, Free ones or the Pay ones??

Do they really make a difference to Windows working and so on...??

Don't know wabout you, but I clearly spotted a difference the first time I cleared my registry. Nowadays I do it with 2 programs and pretty much once a month, so I don't really see the difference. BUT, I wouldn't pay for one. I use an old version of Registry Mechanic, and XP Repair. Basically what I do is remove dislocated and/or corrupted files that are making my computer slow.

Yes SD, I do use CCleaner, and that is brilliant.

What I mean is as well is normal registry cleaning stuff like Registry Doctor, things like that, I don't have them.

CCleaner is one yes, Sentinel is another, that can also look for Spyware in Registry, Sentinel can be attached to your Anti Virus i.e. Avast, McAfee, AVG etc...

Well your computer is most probably crapped even though the registry is clean. Mine is. But they do make a difference the first time, and when ever your computer is crapped because of the registry.

Some apparently can cock up your PC big time, unsure which ones, before CCleaner (Free to use), I had used a Free Trial one before, (forgot which one) cleaned the registry and cocked up a file in the McAfee AnytiVirus system (Not anymore, now have Avast), and error messages always came on when loading up the PC.

Never heard of that happening. But I believe the problem might just as well have been with the McAfee.

I use CCleaner, seems to work fine.
But it hasn't got rid of this pesky spyware which I got last night. It keeps telling me I have viruses which I know I don't have. I've found a couple of utilities that are supposed to fix it but they don't. The problem is when you kill the program off (eg via Task Manager) it just starts up again, so all these utilities do is pop up a warning every second to tell me I have this malware on my PC.

It's driving me mad, but I've finally managed to stop the popups. I just have to get rid of the actual programs and DLLs now. People who do this should have their testicles nailed to a plank of wood.

what do you use for cleaning your computer then? As in software for unwanted programs? It should be easy to get rid of them, unless it's some super virus.

Finally managed to get shot of it with some software called RogueRemover Pro, although they had to issue a new database update to get rid of it.
3 other utilities (CCleaner, AVG and Prevx1) all identified the malware but couldn't get rid of it.

For spyware and stuff, I use Adaware and Spybot.  Together, they nail just about everything.  I haven't had an issue with spyware in over a year.
