Subject: Robert Fripp Appreciation Thread
Date Posted: April 25 2007 at 14:47
This thread is devoted to the mighty Fripp, may the stench of his stool forever reek with the aromas of rarefied screams, and his music, solo and KC.
Anecdotes are welcome, however because this is an appreciation thread, I would remind those who post to pay the proper respect to His Krimson Majesty.
From time to time I will post legends and myths that I have uncovered, that all might bask in the glory that is the Fripp, may his name be always whispered in the corridors of silence.
And remember always, my friends, "Discipline is a Vehicle for Joy."

Recently I have discovered what I believe to be the origins of the Fripp, may his ass forever squat upon the stool of our hearts, in an ancient Celtic legend of the Krimson King.
In times lost to knowledge, when Britain was ruled by the superstition of the druids, and when horrible fiends prowled the lands, devouring babies and raping men and women alike, a being came down from the Giant's Causeway. He had the look of a man, and he he hefted a musical ax that sang as he cut the heads from his enemies. It is said that he once slew a thousand times a thousand Furbolgs (some sort of Celtic demon of sorts) with a single, piercing harmonic that ripped from his ax as leaves blew against it in the light of the dawn. It is said also that afterwards he created from their bodies a terrifying Keep from whence he would stride forth and devastate his foes. Because of this he was called the Krimson King (the Druids like alliteration). Though much of the legend has fading to past remembrance, there is still one tale of how his true name became known to his followers.
One dark evening of a dark month, the minstrels of the land gathered for their yearly musical competition. Intrigued by the prospect of fair competition, the Krimson King descended from his the blood-besmirched walls of his keep to display his prowess to the masses. At the registration desk (yes, I know they didn't have registration desks, but the rough equivalent in Ogham [druid language] is big rock) a mortal dared ask him of the name under which he would enter. And what did he do? You ask; this is what he did. He smiled a cold, cracked smile that devoured the soul of the man's still unborn child Seamus, and said, "Robert". A hush of silence passed amongst the minstrels and troubadours (there was also a meistersinger, but you get the point) assembled. A silence soon to be filled by the solo that followed; a solo so powerful that the closest man died just a little on the inside. But, before the Krimson King could claim his just reward, a fire witch was summoned and she cast a spell on him that his ax should sing no more, but would utter simply, "Fripp". But, this did not worry the Krimson King in the least, he merely bowed his head in silence for a single, heart-rending second and said, "Music is the drink that fills the cup of silence." And, the spell having broken, he raised his ax and saying, "Take and eat Bitch." in that cold, hard way he does, hit her in the face.
Thus, he came to be known as Robert, The Fripp.
Remember always, my friends, "Discipline is a Vehicle for Joy."

His "glissato" solos from the 1970s are unbelievable and I feel my knees deeply trembling when I listen to "Prince Rupert's Lament" or "The Night Watch" (this last sounds better in its live version).

Indeed, this seems most meet that this be true,
and yet
it is still held in some circles that the Fripp, may his strings forever gleam with the facets of his hair, was not born of a woman as was Christ, but born of 10 women, all at the same time (from three fathers perhaps).

Is there really a guitarist as unknown as Fripp and as good as him? In my opinion he is the best, listen to easy money (LTIA) and tell me the solo dosent immedietly turn you on, in fact all of larks tounges is amazing thanks to fripp, but does anyone besides the prog community know him? Probably not, what a shame that amazing talent goes unseen. WHAT FRIPP SAYS IS LAW!!!

I like the 70s Crimson records ( despite Providences and Moonchilds ). I can't stand de 80's stuff. I haven't bothered to listen to what he does nowadays.

Mee too. After Red, I lost my interest in his work.
Discipline, Beat, Thrak, Vroom vroom are not music what I like.
I also don't adore him as a person. Zappa was also bossy with members of the band, but he is more extrovert and funny.
But I understand your admiration. When you are young it's very convinient to have Fripp as idol.

Because even if you dont fully understand him and his music, who can say that your idol isn't on top. Some of his karma could pass on you.
I think that anyone should have own opinion (taste), and if you have then it's impossible to like all his work.

Of course Fripp has a sense of humor, just listen to his comments on Windows Vista
http://youtube.com/watch?v=W7qz1LRCPPw
"Vista is a leap forward, it's not a subject that will touch Apple users... It really is very impressive to see where Windows Vista is going... I'm an Apple user"
He doesn't say a good thing about Windows the entire time. Only a man like Fripp could take phrases like "quantum leap forward" and "very impressive" and make them into insults.

I never before read any appreciation thread so I do'nt know if this one is different or it is allways funny. Yet, Fripp for me is a serious matter.
I think Fripp forced me to get deeper in music listening (by writing some beautiful tracks side by side to very undigestible tracks) and once I did so I've been hooked forever.
King crimso for me is a 25 years love story and it is still growing.

Haha, I watched that a couple of days ago and I didn't get it that way. Are you sure he was being ironic? I actually thought he wanted to say something nice, but didn't really know what and where to take it, so he threw in something ambiguous about Apple and how Vista is great compared to anything else...

I was thinking about the position of KC on the top 100, at number
7. I initially thought to myself, "Why arn't they higher, they
are the greatest in the universe?"
Then I remembered that 7 is the number of completion. So, it is a
symbol of fullness and it is a goodness that KC are number 7. A
symbolic proclamation of their perfection.

You betray your "newb"ness by even comparing Fripp to Hackett. They are both too awesome for words, they are both in leagues of their own. But, even Hackett would admit that Fripp gave him early inspiration, even before Genesis hired him to replace Ant Philips in the early 1970s...

Yeah, Fripp can be equated to god, and Hackett is... god's sidekick aka Laurie Esteban.
I just saw Children of Men the other day and it featured the song "In the Court of the Crimson King" in the soundtrack!

The Fripp appeared to me in a dream last night. He appeared in the form of a giant stool and lifted his cushion to speak. And what he said was the most profound thing I've ever heard, but I forgot what he said.
So, instead I present you with THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF FRIPP AND STOOLIE - and their sidekick Bruford
Fripp and Stoolie (his ever loyal stool) were walking along a pool of dirty water one day, when Fripp paused to ponder the nature of music itself.
Fripp: Stoolie, my friend and ever loyal companion, I have mastered the guitar and have become proficient on the mellotron, but I am still not recognized as the true genius that I am?
Stoolie: Oh Fripp, whose ass I would gladly lie beneath for a century of guitar soloing, I am but a humble, if ever loyal, stool. Why ask me such questions? If I had an answer though, it would be merely the suggestion that you kill off your greatest opponent in the prog community.
Fripp: And who would that be, for the Fripp has no enemies, he is a white-maned fox lurking among the forests at the edge of dawn, he feedeth on the fallow deer and hunteth of the autumnal plains.
Stoolie: Steve Hackett.
Fripp: Who? The Fripp knoweth only one Steve who be master of the axe and that be Howe.
Stoolie: He played in Genesis. And has a new album out with a naked picture of himself with breasts on it.
Fripp: HAHAHAHAHA. So he's Collins's boy? Very good, and how do you suggest he be disposed of?
Stoolie: Why we'll get Bruford to do it, of course.
Fripp: Ah, yes, why didn't I think of that. Bill, be a good boy and come here.
Bill: Yesssszsh, mashter!
Fripp: I have a job for you... to help improve your drumming. Kill Steve Hackett. Do you know of him?
Bill: Yesssszsh, mashter!
Fripp: Of course you do.
TO BE CONTINUED!!!!
