I really think the second is better. It's more upbeat, Spanish Fly is better than Eruption, and Women in Love is probably my favorite VH song! Tongue

I like them both, but the first one is one of the greatest debuts ever made.

the first album is really good ... the second side is a bit lacking in terms of songwriting/inspiration though. The second album is outstanding too, and especially the second side is very impressive. I agree about "Women in Love" - it shows Eddie's ability to successfully combine melodic leads and riff-oriented rhythm guitar playing. Personally I think that this had even more impact on other guitarists than the flashy tapping solos or dive-bomb effects (which doesn't mean I don't love them too).Smile

There is no doubt the first sounds better, even Eddie said he much prefered the mix on the debut. But I do have a soft spot for II; Spanish Fly, and the solo in 'Beautiful Girls'. The first wins but just by a hair. Fair Warning best album.

They never topped their debut album.

Every single song is an absolute classic.

prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Nope, the fist album is far better wnd was recorded "love" in the studio with few overdubs. Sensational aobum that changed metal.

The second album was very dissapointing by comparison. Very tame.

Most bands would be more than happy to release as fine an album as VH1, let alone as a debut album; it hit the rock scene like a breath of fresh air, and virtually changed HM overnight. To my mind, the second album was considerably weaker by comparison - I can still listen to VH1 without getting bored, despite the number of times I've heard it (how can you ever get bored with an album which includes 'Ice Cream Man'?).

Given that they supported Sabbath on their 'Never Say Die' tour, I'd love to have seen Ozzy & Co's faces the first time they had to follow VH on stage...

The first is best and will win by a long way. Having said that, I love "Dance the night away" and "Lighting up the sky", and the intro to "Women in love" is out of this world.

I think VH2 might be better, but I can only think of VH1 songs right now.

Some friends of mine saw them on that tour. Van Halen absolutely blew the Sabs off the stage.

Actually, there is a DVD of Black Sabbath on this tour under the title 'Never Say Die'. Watching that (although I saw the VHS of it), I can easily see why Van Halen blew them away- Sabbath are sluggish, tired and sloppy (much like the accompanying album itself, with the odd good track aside, imho) and I'm not surprised changes were afoot for Sabbath around the corner.
