I would like to know which non progressive bands do you enjoy but wouldn't necessarily tell everyone, and especially would be wary of admitting it to the members of this site.

Please don't just list bands, that makes for boring reading, list why and when you got into these bands.

For me - Metallica...sorry I don't know why but they have a powerful sound. (not their thrash stuff but songs like "no leaf clover" really are quite catchy.)
Also - Limp Bizkit....ok I am serious, I am ready to shoot myself for admitting this...but back when they came out I thought they were great and still catch myself humming along when I hear them.

From these 2 bands you would think I am a metalhead...Im not. I like symph prog.

Thanks!

When I was just starting to get into music (around 7th grade), I liked Andrea Bocelli a lot.  He has a beautiful voice and I always liked the music.

I listen to a lot of potentially embarassing music. Shibuya-kei is fun, sometimes jazzy and impossibly cute which appeals to my japan dork sensibilities - Hi-Posi and Takako Minekawa are among my favourites.

I like a few goth rock bands, mostly Type O Negative and The Sisters of Mercy (and also Peccatum's final album if this counts) because I'm a gloomy person.

I also have a fair collection of computer game soundtracks which I've listened to so often that I can hum along.

I know people will come in and say "oh everything I listen to is brilliant and none of it embarasses me or can be called a guilty pleasure" but you should ignore them because they're just deliberately denying context ;P

Mine is DT. I hate listening to them 'cos there music is so conventional and uninspiring but then again I enjoy it. Going to see them anyway in Newcastle soon.

Don't really listen to any guilty pleasure non-Progressive bands really except the odd Rammstein or Slipknot track. Then again they aren't really pleasurable are they? Wink

I've been and am still a fan of Journey's music--a huge part of my childhood. I also listen to a little Jimmy Buffett from time to time, Hall & Oates, and newer non-prog bands like Train, Matchbox Twenty, Sister Hazel.

I don't consider this a guilty pleasure, but I'm also a huge Jackson Browne fan.

Tv game music. I just love it. Deus Ex type electronica, Monkey island reggae, but most of all, the tunes from the Final Fantasy series. I also like the song "where is the love" by the black eyed peas. Band-wise, it's not so easy dto find, really.. i don't like the killers enough to call them a guilty pleasure, and Babyshambles is not guilty enough, but i do like the lates album by the Fray, "how to save a life", and that is both shameful and pleasurable, so maybe that one.

Oh, and the swedish band "sl*gsmålsklubben"! Better than Genesis!

Music is something I never feel guilty about listening. I even don't mind admitting I have three Shakira albums, although I must say that it's mainly her older (pre-US) material that is listenable.
Even the worst material may be worth listening to, just because of that occasional good bass player or guitarist. It's just something to hear once or twice, but never something to feel guilty about.

Gary Numan and the Tubeway Army (Replicas and Telekon)
Bauhaus Clown (I can feel the scorn already -- loved "Bela Lugosi's Dead" -- which is an anthemic Goth song -- in the movie "The Hunger")
Toto (primarily for the Dune soundtrack -- "Take my Hand" is a blissfully enjoyable track for me)

(not bands, but Kitaro and Giorgio Moroder -- Moroder particularly for Midnight Express and Cat People)

When I played a Bauhaus CD for a friend (which I only bought for "Bela Lugosi's Dead"), he offered me twenty bucks if I'd burn it then and there.  I refused.

I'm a big fan of The Buggles. Well, that's not too far removed from prog.

Oh, yeah, and I like Neil Diamond.

Posted By: Atomic_Rooster

Music's music... whatever - even Robert Wyatt did a Neil Diamond/The Monkees cover (I'm a Believer)

My guilty pleasure is probably Bob Dylan for several reasons:
I like prog and Bob is sort of the antithesis.  He writes many poppy short/repetitive songs; he's a horrible singer; he's a bad instrumentalist; he became overly topical in many of his themes; and his lyrics - for all the hype - are not actually that great (I'm a professional poet, and my opinion of them is not very high; Hammill and Wyatt are much better lyricists)

But I still like Bob's music for some inexplicable reason; I think one of my older friends whom I looked up to in high school was a huge Dylanologist, so that might be it.

*takes a deep breath* Post-1987 Whitesnake.....don't judge me! @.@
Ok, so this pretty much qualifies as guilty pleasure, I'm sure, but I grew up listening to it and grew very fond of Dave's music, that feel-good flashy, but somewhat tasteful (considering others), tunes and its vaguely mellow and sober counterparts...even the simply "softies" like Deeper The Love.

I know, I'm a bad, bad person.

Sorry, Rooster, I disagree. Technically speaking, something may be wrong with Dylan's singing (especially nowadays), but just think of his performances on albums such as BLOOD ON THE TRACKS. No-one else could have sung those songs better, or with greater sensitivity. (It doesn't come as a surprise that Ian Bostridge, Andreas Scholl and other singers of classical "Lieder" admire our Bob.)

My own guilty pleasure would be the Black Crowes, a band I have included among my favourites in my Prog Archives Profile. When they're good, I just ADORE them. Especially AMORICA!

At the same time, I'm fully aware that, in the eyes of the world, albums like A TRICK OF THE TAIL must be guilty pleasures as well. (Phil Collins singing his heart out about some half-baked fairy tale characters? Get lost!) Not to mention TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS, parts of which always move me deeply!

Not embarassed at all to say I really like George Michael, even "Last Christmas"

To further revolt the British members here - I used to really like Oasis, and I still don't think their music is that terrible.

To disgust the French members here - I quite like that first hit song by the French pop starette Alizee (don't remember the title now).

To horrify the Polish members here - that hip-hop song "To my, Polacy" is badass. Kasia Cerekwicka isn't that bad, either.

In fact, I would probably enjoy at least some blatantly commercial and simplistic pop music from all the countries represented on PA.

To top it off, I enjoy (to a varying degree, but still) a fair bit of strictly commercial pop I overhear on the radio, both '80s and '90s (probably the '80s more).

I guess some AOR- Journey, Boston, Foreigner, Toto- could be deemed as my 'guilty pleasure' but I'm not even guilty about that, really. I had some 'hair metal' for a time but soon went off the boil on that where I couldn't listen to it anymore. Maybe Phil Collins' debut 'Face Value' is another, but I do genuinely think that's a great album though I don't like none of his others.

Which is ironic as there's precious little gloom in The Sisters, they're actually quite droll.

I myself own a Petshop Boys album for the sole reason that they have silly glasses and are quite funny, and the record cost 30 NOK(Somewhere around 3.5 USD).

Well, whenever I hear AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long played live by a cover band, or watching one AC/DC's DVDs, I'm one of those people who loses it & start making all sorts of funny "rocker" gestures. If it's played on the radio I switch stations.
My horrendous theory - "Classic" rock radio might just  kill it off by overplay of the same 100 songs. Even the so-called deep tracks' shows play songs everyone knows. Heck, if you've got a bunch of people who love 80s Genesis, is it that hard to figure that you could slip in a few older tunes like "I Know What I Like" or "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", you'll differentiate your station from others & introduce people to music from some of their "favourites" that they might not have heard ?
But then, I remember these business are run by accountants, not music fans or other so called creative types ...Confused

Oops , forgot to add - I love 60s & 70s top 40 radio. I've been able to compile about 10 eighty minute CDs worth of choice select singles. I have no shame or pride, inferiority/superiority complex when it comes to what I like. Prog, Pop, Punk, even a few Polka tunes that I enjoy. Though the only Polka music I own is Weird Al Hooked on Polka medleys.
I guess you could say in brief that I just enjoy musicStar
P.S. Good thread, nice to see prog fans aren't necessarily snobs...

I don't wanna fall on any kind of agressive discussion, but you can't find a band uninspiring and enjoy their music, that's non-sense.

Maybe I didn't explain myself clearly in what I meant to say.

If you like them, something inspires you in their music, maybe you feel cheerful, agressive, depressing, anything, but they actually cause a reaction on you, and that's what makes you enjoy it. BTW, Van Halen rocks!!!

Not precisely guilty but I really enjoy ther music of many non-prog bands that made a kind of "soundtrack" when I was 13-20 y.o. and Their music still makes me remember those days:

U2: Their albums til Achtung baby! are really good IMO.
Simple Minds: It's impossible for me to forget songs like Alive and Kicking and the classic Don't You Forget About Me.
The Cure: One of the most non-prog amazing bands that I've been heard! Disintegration is a masterpiece!
Johnny Cash: Master!
Tom Waits: MASTER!
Tori Amos: Beautiful songs, beautiful lyrics, beautiful woman.
Diamanda Galas: Amazing singer with some of the most impressive and weird albums that I've been heard.
AC-DC: If I tell you the crazy things we made when we were young with AC-DC music breaking our ears... you would'n believe it!

On-topic: The most "guilty" pleasure I have & like is some trance like Alice Deejay.

I don't think I have any music that makes me feel guilty when I listen to it, but in certain situations certain bands can be embarrassing to mention. I wouldn't play early Genesis or ELP to my heavy metal orientated friends, or mention that I like Kate Bush and Duran Duran, I wouldn't dare say that NWA or Public Enemy is good in my prog circle (although to be fair my prog circle consists of 3 people), and liking Foreigner and Asia brings a negative reaction. Whenever I play Magma my family thinks I'm weird. LOL

The "you listen to that type of music, your knowledge is of less worth" type reaction I've noticed always comes from people who always stick to popular or highly-respected music you can't possibly attack.

These days I just don't have any guilty pleasures, I mean I'm into such a wide range of music that I really don't care if I'm judged for certain facets of my taste, I really don't care about being judged on my taste at all to be honest, I enjoy hearing what everyday people think of thrash and death metal.

Absolutely!!! What a lovely little ditty! "Careless Whisper" is irresistible as well! I guess guilt just doesn't come into the picture...

Same with Abba's "Waterloo", and maybe a handful of other Abba tunes, and even the Bee Gees' hits (universally beloved! ) from SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER - although you wouldn't have caught me admitting this back in the seventies!

Do you remember Vicky Leandros? Now THOSE were the days!

AAAAAAAAAAAAABBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Such humble beginnings, but they went to become popmeisters. Not prog by  any measure, but  their compositions & arrangements do show a certain genius in weaving a complex wall of sound into simple songs.

I'm too young to remember Vicky Leandros, but I've actually got one album and the wonderful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nD4ib9-laGY - L'amour Est Bleu on '45. Came in second to Sandie Shaw's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRgAZL2Oz44 - Puppet on a String in '67, both great songs but Vicky (and composer Andre Popp, another hero) deserved to win. (She won with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0Ar-YiiPFs&mode=related&search= - Apres Toi in '72, is nice but I prefer the former)

ABBA's last album Visitors is kind of prog-related. here's (a not so good example on that, the hit) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8jqAEoogHw&mode=related&search= - Head over Heels

Their first two-three singles were all great (+ the new one with that violent video isn't too bad either)! And they should have won the Eurovision a couple of years ago.

But I still like Bob's music for some inexplicable reason; I think one of my older friends whom I looked up to in high school was a huge Dylanologist, so that might be it.

Just because you're a professional poet doesn't mean his lyrics are any better or worse based on your opinion.  If you were a doctor giving advice on a prescription I would take that into account more, but art is subjective and being a pro doesn't mean your say is the all mighty.   Maybe thats not how you meant it, but thats what I took what you were saying as.  Dylan wrote some great lyrics, great music and he is a fantastic singer.  Anyone that covers dylan makes his songs watered down.

I never understood guilty pleasures because if people feel so guilty for listening to bands X, Y, Z  then why do these people freely admit to listening to band X, Y, Z?

I listen to what I want, who cares what you listen to as long as you genuinely enjoy it.

the answer to yout last question is: the same reason you played spin-the-bottle in high school.

Bob dylan is a great lyricist. He may not always have been that consistently good ("i would not feel so all alone, everybody must get stoned", for instance) but whoever claims that songs like "Mr. Tambourine man", "Love mius zero", "it's all over now baby blue" and "Hurricane" are weak in the lyrical department must have real confidence in his own poetry indeed :)

I am the kind of person that think that every type of music deserves to be listened, it also depends on the listener's tastes and that's what makes us all different. When you are growing up, your musical taste goes through a "journey" that ends with the choice of staying with prog as your first listening option...however, there are some bands/singers that still you like, no matter what...
I am not guilty at all for the bands i'm going to list because, as i said before, the music experience relies heavily on the listener and his perpspectives...
* The Cure (does anybody hate their "goth" era, 80-83?)
* Bauhaus (Masters of Goth)
* The Smiths/Morrissey (Finest brit pop at its best!)
* Nick Cave & the bad seeds
* Metallica (81-90 era)

Triumvirate: so cheesy and EL&Pish but so beautiful (Illusions... and Spartacus, of course).

EL&P itself: bombastic and overrrrrrr. But it was my introduction to the prog world. But I can't hear to Works anymore; only Palmer's side and the last side. Emerson's Concerto is one of the greatest pioece of cr%p from the sevenies.

Uriah Heep: in some circles I never mention the great love I have for this band (Byron & Lawton era, specially the first one). Wonderworld was my first Heep experience and still is so emotional for me.

ABBA: God, these guys make me remember my childhood!  And I love their melodies and the gorgeous voices of Fritha and Agnetha. And they were so beautiful...

Wakeman: so hyperbolic. In my defense, I really apreciate only his first album, The Wives.

The Monkees: I don't care if they were just funny guys without a drop of talent; their music was good pop-rock in the sixties way.

Helloween: The second Keeper is the only power/melodic metal someone really need to have. But it's wonderful!

Mercyful Fate: I know that King Diamond is creepy - in a way he certainly wouldn't like to know. But I really love their first couple of albums.

There is more, but I can't remember now. Shame on me!

I never played it in high school actually.

Anyways, it just seems really dumb that people will admit to liking something they obviously do not feel guilty about.  Especially when the artists aren't even considered guilty pleasures.  I mean people are just listing whatever they hell they want.  Its more like "name the band you like to listen to but don't listen to that much".

Come on, since when are Metallica, Faith No More, the Who, Bob Dylan, etc guilty pleasures?  Since when is listening to good music considered a guilty pleasure?  Oh my gosh I listen to f**king Beethoven, I'm so guilty.  Please arrest me, because no one should know I like the 5th symphony.  BLASPhEMY.

Seems a little ridiculous, almost like my sarcasm.

Being a teenager in the 80's meant I was exposed to Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, Teardrop Explodes and my favourite band from that era was Simple Minds.

Also have a soft spot for many 70's glam rock bands, The Sweet, Slade & David Bowie.

After a couple of beers I may put on some of the waltzes and polkas of Johann Strauss II.  I love classical music and opera, but Strauss is considered "classical light" by some and therefore not appreciated the same way as say Johannes Brahms or Richard Wagner; which is rather sad.

um, i would say my guilty pleasure in music would be either euro dance music or 80s pop. After playing hours of ddr i really grew to love the music, and bands like tears for fears i still think are cool. They made high quality pop music, and some of those bands could actually play. Um, also i would say level 42. Mark King is a great bassist even though he is in an uber cheesy group (who can all play fairly well). I also really like some bluegrass every once in a while.

I don't think liking anything outside prog is a reason to feel guilt. The way I see it, geting to know and enjoy different genres makes you a better listener. I congratulate myself for having such a big disposition to know about any kind of music. Regardless I find out I like it or not. I've heard from Classical to Jazz (old and fusion), Oldies (50's, 60's), classic rock, 80's pop (love it to death), 80's heavy metal (blond long hair guys type), dark, thrash metal, speed metal, death metal, pop and rock in my language, very old music from my country (stuff very few people under 60 listen to, I'm 32). I enjoy all kinds of prog, from the very light to the most complex and inaccesible.

When I was around 18 I really thought anything that wasn't prog, was crap. I started listening to 80's pop actually, and never stoped liking it. But I would take advantage of any situation to bash "inferior" genres to prog. After a few years I learned that there is more than complexity to music to make it good. Like diversity, passion, inspiration, feeling. And that was when I found out there are tons of crap in prog. I used to like Le Orme, but from a few years to date, I can't help finding it cheesier every day. Has anyone ever listened to "I heard it through the grape vine", by Marvin Gaye?, a 60's oldie?. I contains more passion and conviction than all Relayer together.

Feel guilty of disregarding thousands of great songs out there, just to be able to say Prog is the ultimate genre. ...It is not. Don't get me wrong, I love it. But not taking a chance to enjoy the rest of the music in the world is a huge mistake.
