Hi evrybody, I'm Hans. I'm a musician (guitar, bass, composer etc) with quite an ecclectic taste, whch includes but it is not limited to: some Metal (Slayer, Meshuggah, some NWOBHM), 70's P-Funk, some old rap (especially the louder the uncompromising type hard dry beats), classical music (Stravinsky, Varése, Debussy, Arvo Pärt, Wagner etc), Miles Davis, Afro-Beat (Fela Kuti, very minimalistic groovy stuff, 30minute songs with a completely un-progressive approach, quite enjoyable if it's your thng) and of course prog (mostly the old 70's variety such as Yes, Magma, GG, VDGG, and some modern prog mostly TFK and related stuff). I try to keep an open mind although there is some music that I really don't like: C&W, dutch popular folklore (Frans Bauer etc), German schlagers etc, you get the idea....there may be some songs here that sound interesting, I just haven't found any yet.

I've been browsing this site for a while, I figured I might as well contribute at least in some of the forums, I may try and write some reviews one day

Smile

welcome Hans, good to see the contignent of dutchies is expanding.

so i understand you play and compose music, professional, or just for fun, do you play in a band, and do you have a myspace account with songs on them if you are?

Agree on Frans Bauer's music, but he is a dear isn't he. I've got more problems with accepting Jan Smit.

And know for the million dollar question.

which do you prefer, Selling England or Close To The Edge?

I am born and raised in Den Haag, first De Schilderswijk, then Mariahoeve and now Loosduinen, near the forest, dunes and beach (Kijkduin). My brother lives in Zoetermeer (Rokkeveen). Good to have some people from Holland here Thumbs%20Up

I don't make a living with it , I need a serious upgrade in my studio to take a shot at that.
You can find me at www.myspace.com/pitchblenderlab. There's no music there at the moment, sorry

Frans seems pretty authentic, he's probably one of the very few, if not the only one in that scene, I agree on that

I just sat through Selling England twice, just to be sure, however I do prefer CTTE, I'll tell you why:

I'm not too familiar with proggy Genesis, besides I'm a sucker for long songs, whether it's Fela, Funkadelic, Klaus Schulze, Wagner (his operas could last more than 4 hours, the Ring is even more that 14 hours altogether). I don't mind as long as it's well written and as long as the whole thing works. Besides, CTTE (the song) as one of the best bass-riffs I've ever heard. And I really like Jon's voice, one of the most disctinctive voices in rock history (together with Michael McDonald's).
I still think Selling England is a fantastic piece of work. Quite essential in fact. It just has to grow on me, I guess.

Which do you prefer?Question

Hans, welcome to this cellar moldy cellar full of the best prog wine. One more Dutchie is more than welcome. Greetings from Best to Bleiswijk.

And in response to your question: I cannot stand Jon's voice, contrary to you, so I prefer Selling England, which is also my favourite Genesis album.

Actually, I live in Bleiswijk at the moment, and have done so for 27 years now, but before I lived in Ijsselmuiden (near Kampen) en Dalfsen (my place of birth) both in Overijssel (East-Holland, just for the curious non-dutch viewers). I also remember the kakkers, with their brand clothes, that were so expensive only because of the brandname (that stuff still exists of course)

Yes, I had to think of that as well! Lacoste and Kappa and so on. Even if you saw only a tiny little bit of a shirt under a pull, it still had to be real Lacoste or something like that.

I attended a Frank Zappa concert in the early Eighties, great to see all those hippie fathers with their kids on their shoulders and Zappa frequently tuning his guitar with his headphone on while the band played the most amazing time signatures Wacko but Zappa remained in control, his most favorite hobby Wink !

I read you like Fela Kuti. Now that's an artist I would like to check out once. Is there an album you can recommend? I have the idea that he made many albums.

You're right, there are quite a lot of albums. Most of his total output is available on CD (2 albums per CD), with a few of them missing..
As his albums usually sound more like 12" singles (rarely crossing the 30minute mark in total) , it might be best to try some of his 70's albums like Gentleman or Zombie as the songs are a little shorter like 10 to 15 minutes, in the 80's his songs would be closer to 30 minutes (best to hear those on cd rather than lp as the songs are cut in two halves on vynil, an instrumental side with some saxophone/piano,guitar solos, and a vocal side). The typical Fela song would have an instrumental section and a vocal section, where the basic groove his being maintained throughout the song. But there's lots and lots happening on top of the groove.

So probably my favorite 70's albums:
Gentleman/Afrodisiac
Zombie
Monkey Banana/Excuse-O
J.J.D./Unnecessary Begging

Favorite 80's albums (if you've survived the above mentioned):
Teacher Don't Teach Me Nonsense
Beasts Of No Nation/Overtake Don Overtake Overtake

There's also a compilation 2cd (which I don't  have, because I have all the albums already). This one is called Best Best of Fela, which the selection done by his son Femi.

Hope this has been helpful to you.

Yes, very much! I once heard a long track on the radio by Fela that was fascinating. He was raging against... I think it was I.T.T., probably some western multinational in Africa. So he got on my list of artists-I-would-like-to-check-out.

Thanks!

A lot of his earlier songs were about african culture, which upset a lot of the african governments who tried to perform well as european puppets. So Fela got in trouble with the Nigerian governement many times, he was severely attacked expecially by Obansanjo (the very same guy who is in charge overthere now, one of his henchman was Yar'Adua, who supposedly won the current election). So Fela's songs became more and more political. ITT (IInternational Thief Thief) being one of them. If you want some more (the whole collection?), http://biochem.chem.nagoya-u.ac.jp/~endo/EAFela.html here  you can find a very large, detailed discography of the man (mostly vinyl stuff).

Does anyone have any idea how I can put links here?

another discography with cd's available and a dvd.

I warn you about the man's attitude during concerts (I made a concious choice never to see him live because of this, his recordings are enough for me), because he yells and screams at his musicians, he's known to beat his (numerous) wives etc. A genuine Censored

He died about 10 years ago

Really! (About the yelling, beating etc.) Thanks once again. Yes, I know he died. I also remember that some of his children had a band (Femi, Sola and Yeni). And I remember that Femi saw his father as the leader of Africa. I suppose because of the political messages in his music.
