Various Genres definition

Albums or CD's where more than one artist is featured either as a SAMPLER or a TRIBUTE to a particular band. Examples: - Peter and The Wolf - Prog Fairytale - 1975 / The Reading Room - 2000 / Leonardo - The Absolute Man - 2001 / Best Prog Rock Album in the World... Ever - 2003 / Un Voyage En Progressif Volume 1 to 8 / Kalevala - A Finnish Progressive Rock Epic.

When more than one artist is featured on a particular album it doesn't mean that the album belongs to various genres of prog. What if the featured artists belong to the same genre? Confused

Besides if it's a tribute album then it always belongs to a particular genre even if artists featured on it are from different backgrounds.

Anybody agree with me?

Various genres should only be used for the Various artists sections, there should not be any bands under that classification.

The various artists sections needs to be so classified, as we do not (yet) assign genres by album.

But look at the definition. It doesn't say anything about genres. An album featuring various artists belonging to the same genre would still be classified under various genres although it would belong to that particular genre.
And the case of tribute albums. An album which is a tribute to a particular band belongs to the genre that band belongs to. Even if artists featured on the album are from different backgrounds 'cos they play the music of the band they want to pay a tribute to.
Do you follow my drift? Confused

But we can't classify by album, only by band. "Various artists" is effectively a band on this site.

Yes, I understand. But the case is Various artists don't necessarily have to belong to Various genres. How about renaming that "subgenre" to Miscellaneous for instance?

EDIT: maybe Unclassified would be better?

Why isn't called 'Various Artists'? All the entries are Various Artists  ... Confused

It's intended to describe the style of music.

The problem is that Various Genres is listed under the title PROG SUB-GENRES.
It isn't a sub genre! It's a special case.

Maybe this has been discussed before in another thread.
I would prefer to delete it from there because the title VARIOUS ARTISTS is already existing with links for the three relevant groups.

If we delete it from there, it would be deleted all together. Unfortunately, that lsit is picked up automatically from the genres.

Hmmh - i'm not really familiar with the database structure - but I think there must be a way to hide (not to delete anything) the link Various Genres (style=29) in the PROG SUB-GENRES title.

IMO nothing more is necessary ...
