Yes this is entirely serious. I would like you to recommend me a bad album that you would only give a 1 to 2 star rating if you felt like listening to it enough times to review it. It MUST be a studio album. I feel like listening to some music that I would not like at all and
would hate intensely but like it just enough to stand it every once in a
while. The sort of album you would return to a store after a few
listens.
Also no sl*gging off a band.
And try to stay away from RIO/Avant-Prog if possible.
Credit to Bern for suggesting the title and giving me the push to create this thread
And I am serious about this.

The only albums I have in my collection that could belong here are Jay Chou's Fantasy and the Rocky 4 soundtrack.

Just one?! I can't count the number of albums I bought and returned after a few listens (and some of them were great artists, too);
'Playtime' National Health (an aimless jam sans Dave Stewart)
'Remixes' Yes (oh dear-- I gave it a chance, but it's just bad)
'All Heaven Broke Loose' Bill Bruford's Earthworks (love ya Bill, but no)
'Velvet Darkness' Allan Holdsworth (his disappointing debut solo)
'Duke' Genesis (I've never understood its popularity)
Mind you, these aren't necessarily 1 star albums, but if wasn't going to be listening to them at least once a year then why own it..

Pain of Salvation - Scarsick Tool - 10,000 Days (not bad, but it's the same old, same old) David Gilmour - On An Island (some not bad moments, but it's dull) Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (not bad, but dull) Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Tarkus (the opening track is fine, the rest is terrible) Pure Reason Revolution - The Dark Third (overrated)

I'll be fair and say a bad Tull album. In fact, I'll say THE bad Tull album. I'll say...ROCK ISLAND. It's worse than even Big Generator, which had a decent song here or there. Besides, I expect better from Tull.

A really bad album from a favourite band of mine? Under Wraps by Jethro Tull comes to mind first. That one really isn't my cup of wonder. Also, I'm not that enthusiastic about such albums as Ummagumma by Pink Floyd, Vapor Trails by Rush and probably would not like the first Genesis album either (if I had it), judging from the versions on Archives 1.

Oops, sorry. Karcius' debut is actually just not too interesting, but it's not bad (imo). The two first Voivod albums would be "bad" for a proghead, as they are mainly screaming mid-80s (before hair was farmed) metal, & I do actually like about half of the music on them. & the Dave Clark 5 made great singles, but bad albums as most mid 60s "pop" acts did until the Beatles showed the world the light This WTF, what music do they play ?

Fully agree with these "if you want something bad" recommendation. I did not mention these in my earlier post just because I had not bothered to review them.

Well the idea put forth was "I feel like listening to some music that I would not like at all and would hate intensely but like it just enough to stand it every once in a while. The sort of album you would return to a store after a few listens."
Presto Ballet do exactly that to me. I don't hate it but it kind of annoys me and same with Kino and the others. Also the fact they cancelled their gig at Calprog 3 weeks before the show last year leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I disagree with The Mars Volta part, but about the second part of the quote... man, you surely know about music. Wisest words EVER...
Really, I recently gave a friend the oportunity to listen to Kayo Dot's...He's a man of varied taste that likes everything....
...I almost lost his friendship because of my "musical gift"...
When someone tries to sell you 14 MINUTES OF REPETITION as "avant garde art", well...
... you're the one who has to decide what to buy.

I am sorry to put it so bluntly, but The T has certainly lost the knowledge of where a joke ends and annoyance starts, as well as the difference between opinion and fact which he has been promoting as fierely as none other (not that I can do that either). I mean, I used to not be bothered, but reading the same message of the same content and attitude in every thread irks me a lot and makes me question if progressive forums ever progress.

C'mon, Igor, cheer up!
These forums are usually full of praise (often undeserved praise) and it's good to hear some negative opinions, provided they are given in civilised and rather humourous way, for a change.
Also from this thread you can learn about other people's dislikes, and it can be very useful for you (it is for me anyway), as it highlights musical tastes of others here and it makes it easier to establish how reliable their recommendation would be for you.

Are you talking about my Kayo Dot references? Oh sorry.... It's just my own inmature way of getting back at the countless of anti-DT cheap-shots I read in every thread (even non-musical ones ) every day... .... Yes, it's childish.... No questions about it.
By the way, if we're around here by year 2012, you know what will be my comments on every thread? "As awful as the Kayo Dot album from 2006"... ... Just kidding... Let's wait till june and I will quit crying like a baby.... Until then, please don't take offense, none is meant.
EDIT: And by the way, I think this thread from the start wasn't really trying to be THE most serious or objective thread ever....

Ah, you should not take it seriously, but if you hear from Sasquamo next time that Kino or Frost or OSI Free is a Masterpiece, bear in mind it comes from a person who thinks that Lamb and Relayer are bad etc etc etc .... Very useful indeed.

I already promised... I'll stop doing it so frequently... but whenever I see cheap shots, I will counter with cheap shots... and as cheap shots are, well, cheap, is it really so big of a deal?? I promise, I'll do it once a week from now on.... (unless is in the midst of a serious discussion and serves me as an argument, of course)

I would have to suggest:
Trinity - Precious Seconds
An English band supposedly influenced by Floyd/Pendragon, but in reality sounding very inferior to either, and with a singer who would do best sticking to karaoke.

It's really painful to see Kino mentioned several times here (especially by another Kansas fan) since I believe their album is the best neo-prog act of 21st century so far
To answer the original question, I would go with Queensrÿche's eponym EP. I didn't succeed to stand any song all the way through but I'll try again : I like to hurt myself from time to time ... and I haven't written a one star review yet !

well, Queensryche EP is a US power metal gem and not prog at all and maybe if you are not fan of the 80's US power metal scene (Fates Warning, Vicious Rumours, Titan Force, Savatage etc) there is no point in reviewing it at all...

^ "Script" is actually my all-time favourite album.
Considering 90s Marillion - yep, they're weak.
I dislike Power Metal and especially Power-Prog too...and I do not like FATES WARNING either(only "Disconnected" has some nice tracks)...but I like QUEESNRYCHE!!! Geoff is an incredible vocalist!

IMO, Marillion released only great albums, from their debut to This Strange Engine... i used to love power metal but i can't stand it now...
Fates' 1988-2001 period is awesome... A Pleasant Shade Of Grey is the best concept/progressive metal album ever..
Queensryche are great and most underrated.. Tate is God...
