If have been trying to get in to Zeuhl but i am not sure with weach album to start, should i start with Magma? cause Live has amazing reviews, is there something like a standar album for this genre (like dark side of the moon for space rock)? Zeuhl its like avantgarde with jazzier influence and operatic vocals, right? Thanks for your Future help.  ------------- When I Was An Alien The Truth Wasnt Out There... |

Magma: I would seriously advice to start by their first album. If it doesn't kill you, you should try Mekanik Destruktiw Komandoh, the "Retrospektiw I & II" album (avoid the III), Their second and their last. ------------- ¡Beware of the Bee! |

People say Udu Wudu is the best Magma album to start with. It wasn't hard for me to get into at all, but then again 1001 and MDK weren't either. Go for 1001 Centigrades if you like jazzier prog and MDK if you're more into avant music. Besides these three albums, I also own Retrospektiw III which is great (the Zeuhl gospel piece is very silly but I like it a lot, Hhai is amazing!, and La Dawotsen is a short, nice lighter piece), but I would suggest not starting with it. -------------

DUN - Eros,start with this,its the most avant-garde oriented Zeuhl album ,its the easier one to savour .

Fully agree with this recommendation - Magma was a bit difficult for me at the start, and, probably only after "4 Visions" I've fallen totally in love with the subgenre ------------- carefulwiththataxe |

I'd recommend MDK to start, because the jazzier stuff is less representative of Zeuhl.

Go with Udu Wudu, Jannik Topps bass is at his most interesting, its still an extremly weird album but more accessible, it was my first by them and Charley records have a far cheaper print of it than 7th records so its a good place to start and much more inexpensive so if you don't like zeuhl you havn't blown a fortune on something like MDK which is twice the price. ------------- |

Visions, in my opinion. If you like Jazziness, check out Zao (not the
Metalcore band) and Potemkine. |

For Magma I would start with 'Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh (.M.D.K.)' This is very Jazz influence. Vander himself stated MDK is to him what 'A Love Supreme' was to Coltrane.
For an easier start (which a lot of people have said here already), '4 visions' would suit nicely. I can also second 'Angherr Shisspa' by KOENJIHYAKKEI, which suprisingly easy on the ears. I would amuse also have have listen to Bordems, so the Noisy (punk influenced) complexity of 'Ruins' could be worth your while (thought technically I don't really see them as zeuhl). p.s. if you are looking to go a little deeper into the genre, have a read through the Zeuhl 5 thread; a lot of good information in there. |

 It's tricky indeed! Great recommendation anyway.I have Angherr Shisspa, which I think is wonderful. I haven't had the opportunity to hear the others though. |
