Yes indeed Jody, one of British comedy's truly memorable characters.

Sad news.
I was surprised to discover that AYBS was so popular in the US. I would have thought it was too "British" (but what do I know?).

I'm floored.
Enjoyed Inman very much. AYBS had an excellent cast, but Inman truly shone.
Sadly missed.

According to one of the obituaries I read, one of his responses when people came up to him in the street and asked if he was free was "No, but I'm very reasonable...".  I liked that.

I always loved the running jokes about Mrs. Slocombe's "pussy".

Do you think she dyed it blue to match her hair?

Every day I find more and more hard to regret someone's death. Death is a part of life, and if a person lives a good life, there should be nothing but happiness and good memories, specially if you get to die at a very advanced age. I do, however, feel sad about infortunate deaths, as in innocent people being murdered in fuel wars, innocent people getting killed by arseholes drivers, etc. But if you get to live your life more or less in a good way, and you feel happy with what you acomplished, then a natural, peaceful death is exactly what you should expect, and no one should look at this as tragedy, just as a natural and quite logical event.

regarding "Are you being served?" i worked in various London department stores in the 80's and 90's and though the show is a caricature of department store life it is not so far from the truth - the characters were real - the snooty one, the posh lady with the pussy, the wise old ex-military manager, the fatherly old man who is useless but no one has the heart to sack him, the dolly bird, the gay man, the cheeky youngster, the grumpy storeman, i knew them all!

some of the situations were real though exaggerated, they could have made a good scene from was the fire/bomb evacuations, people standing in the park in various states of dress or in the middle of a hair do - the managers running round finding everyone and worrying if someone was locked in the loo!

happy memories when i see the show, and some stores are still like the one in the show!Smile

I worked - very briefly - in a department store in the North of England in my early 20s and the AYBS characters were all present and correct there as well. I never liked the show that much, but Inman was a real icon of British popular culture.

John was great, as were the others. We get re-runs of AYBS every year or so over here, an somehow I always run into episodes I hadn't seen before.

RIP

I never expected a thread dealing with the late John Inman to be seen here, yet am glad it is

Like Fred & Syzygy, I put in some time during 80's and early 90's in dept stores.......Are you being Served.... it was all so true to life!

It must be 20 years since the Grace Brothers closed it's doors..... I am sure John will be remembered fondly by many.

Captain Peacock: Are you free, Mr Humphries?

Mr Humphries: I'm a little busy at the moment

Captain Peacock: There's a man here who would like to be measured for a dress

Mr Humphries (leaving other customer immediately): I'm free!

+++cue raucous hilarity from studio audience+++

British humour, eh?
