Hey guys im in the hunt to purchase prog rock cds and was wondering where you guys get yours from. Do you guys buy them online or at your local store? I don't mind if they are second hand (the cheaper the better), however i live in australia so importing might be costy. I'm after Genesis, King crimson, camel, beatles etc.... Cheers |

i get virtually all my cd's and lp's off Amazon and Ebay these days, occasionally buying from London collector's shops (pricey). obviously there is an element of caveat emptor involved, but if you use your common sense and find trustworthy suppliers you won't go far wrong

Good guy with wide range and as reliable as they come. He has a reputaion second to none and it is well deserved.
Another top guy is Malcolm Parker, here in the UK. I'm not sure about shipping to Oz but again, another friendly, reliable supplier (he also owns the label Cyclops).

What I woud add is that you should, like all purchasing, shop around. I use, amongst other things, a search tool - there may be an equivalent in Oz - take a look at the link for the concept..

He grabs roughly 95% of my web purchases, and these represent roughly 50% of my acquisitions, the rest done through local shops and the rare visit to chain stores.
Your local stores (not the mega Virgins, Fnac or Tower) are your best bet. ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

I concur with that - under NO circumstances should you, or anyone else, EVER use a large record chain. They buy large quantities with huge discounts from the record label (for bulk buying) which is NEVER passed on to the consumer. This also means that the small, independent labels have to sell their goods at a reduced price to the chain thus cutting their profit. I say profit but that's relative as many prog labels are on the financial knife-edge. That's the more covert side of the chain shopping experience. The most obvious factors for choosing independants are choice (from a prog perspective), personal service and cost - they are always cheaper, even when shipping is taken into account (again the Oz caveat must be applied here as I have no idea about shipping there).

I live in Sydney Australia and I too find it hard to acquire certain cds.
The JB HI FI at macquarie had the first 4 Camel albums which surprised me. I also got both Rainbow Theatre remasters from a JB HI FI in Bondi Junction and I thought that was an awesome find. So you will find some surprises just from stores but you do have to be a bit lucky sometimes
 .You should be able to find the other bands from any rock store really (especially The Beatles), I didnt have any trouble hunting down Genesis and also King Crimson.
Beyond that I find some bands are exceptionally hard to find here in Australia, such as Anglagard, Anekdoten and Kayo dot, so you may need to use web site orders to get albums by less commercially viable and older bands. |

JB HI FI is the best big chain in Melbourne. They have a reasonable choice if you are prepared to look through the Heavy Metal section for Prog. I am. There is also Radical Records in Dandenong. The name says it all. I get my IQ CD/DVDs direct from GEP. It is faster by a country mile and all the money goes to the band. ------------- Allomerus. Play.com, eBay and Amazon are my favorites. CDON is fine as well, except for poor service when it comes to delivery times. Otherwise, I buy stuff at regular CD stores too. ------------- RIO/AVANT/ZEUHL - The best thing you can get with yer pants on! |

I use two stores mainly. Looney Tunes, in Burlington Ontario, and Records on Wheels in Dundas Ontario. Very knowledgable guys running the stores, love their Prog and psychedelic genres. Great stock of rare and hard to find cd,s and new and used vinyl.

Apart from my purchases from Amazon for which I am a little ashamed as
they are rather too big a company I use the following....... There was a recent newspaper article in my town journal about a guy who started an obscure record store in a basement 15 minutes from where I live. There was a quote from him that said "This is for someone looking for Van Der Graaf Generator and Magma." My jaw just about hit the floor. Unfortunately, the place is a bit small, so the selection isn't huge.
