  One of the best French progressive bands of all time who blended all the right elements. The music of Atoll is complex, very elaborate, and yet beautiful and delicate. Arrangements are sophisticated yet melodic and powerful. Their music exudes a certain degree to that of Yes and Genesis yet still remains characteristically French and original. L’Araignee-Mal is a masterpiece and in relation to their debut Musiciens-Magicians works slightly more on the fusion elements. The album contains lots of great symphonic keyboard work with the addition of violin on this album, which sounds great when mixed with their guitar, bass and drum interplay. Side B, as it appeared on the original vinyl issue, is consumed by the epic title track which is a truly wonderful and inspired piece of music. An impressive release. Highly recommended.

 

MUSICIENS - MAGICIENS

 

 

 Atoll were a talented French ensemble who very much carried their own symphonic sound blending the finer aspects of French comrades Ange, Pulsar, and Mona Lisa. Next to Ange, Atol were probably the most influential of the French symphonic groups. With this debut album Musiciens-Magiciens, Atol led the way for the others with a wonderful progressively charmed album full of emotion and originality. Their style was very theatrical in nature offering dynamic and melodic arrangements with some great song writing and vocal harmonies. Musically Musiciens – Magiciens falls in with the likes of Genesis, Yes, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Ange. The album is comprised of 7 tracks of early prog rock with the amazing 11 min epic track Le Baladin Du Temps being its defining moment. An excellent and recommended album full of originality!
