The art of sarcasm has been replaced by a simple :P , I know I've been a techer for a while. I was cruel and dropped 5 points from every emoticon, and 3 of them failed XD XD XD |

Exactly! It's all too easy to read something into a written post that isn't there; what is meant as a jokey p+++ take can, if read wrong come across as insulting. Hence the emoticon - it can soften a sentence to convey the fact it was written with humour ( ), or conversly can emphasise the seriousness of a point ( ).
That's my opinion, anyway - if anyone disagrees they can go and themselves up the with a bloody big !

I'm not really sure on my opinion on this subject.... Excessive use of emoticons make people look more childish and immature(from my point of view), but emoticons are very neat in certain cases, f.ex when you want to express irony or sarcasm with a winking smiley

they are good when things can be taken the wrong way. For instance I recently made Tony R get upset with one of my comments which I was "making fun of him" a emoticon could've been useful.
