When did Geddy Lee (Rush) sing at his best?

The 70's find him versatile, high-reaching, but his shrieks were kind of...atrocious. (sorry). The 80's found him better in melody, singing without breaking anybody's timpani, but less high-reaching and less versatile... The 90's found him tired. I'll go with the 80's then.

Actually, I liked him best from about Hemispheres through to Moving Pictures. I still like him now, but found there was a happy medium between the highness of his beginnings, to the more mellower tones we've heard since Signals. I put the 80's, but in reality I like from the latter part of the 70's to the early part of the 80's.

their 90s work was the best vocally IMO but the worst otherwise generally. Vapor Trails was a step backward vocally as he returned to his 70s sound.
Presto is the best Geddy Lee album vocally.

once he lowered his irritating banshee pitch from "permanent waves"
onwards, RUSH quickly became my favourite group. they were, of course,
quite amazing before that, but the "vocals" drove me up the wall! i also
liked the "new waveish" slant that they put to their music at that time.

fully enjoy a RUSH-album during the mid- to late-70s

Like Rush's music, Geddy's voice always suited the time period they were in.  He has a love or hate voice, I love it.

I think his voice was at it's best in the 80's when he was screaming less.

Moving Pictures remains my top Rush album, but his voice was at it's best between Signals and Counterparts IMO.

The '90s for me - quite definitely. His performance on "Counterparts", for instance, is really something. And when I heard him sing live in 2004 he really cooked! I know he's a love-or-hate vocalist, but he's really one of my favourites.

The very first album was the peak for me.
But it'll be interesting to see him on this new tour for sure!

Your question about Geddy Lee reminds me of one lawyers often ask to trap defendants:

E.g., "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?"

You question sort of assumes that Geddy Lee at some point was less than "improved."

If one answers yes, then s/he is sort of admitting it was less good before. If one answers no, s/he suggest Lee hasnt' improved.

Kind of funny...Smile

On everything up to 'All The World's A Stage', he was just too squeaky for me... when I listen to those early albums, I keep wanting to insert some 3 in 1 into his orifices...Pinch

I say he was always good, but maybe a bit better in the 80s...

His voice fits the music in any period, and I love it. Same great quality.

80's...... when he stopped sounding like a girlWink

I liked Geddy's voice since the early days, but I do have to say I prefer him singing in the lower register. He did go a tad too high at times on albums such as 2112.
I actually think he has improved over the years, so I voted for the '90s +.

This may not be the correct word to use in a rock context, but I think these days Geddy has a very 'pleasant' voice. Distinctive and strong. Smile

After 1981 his voice live went down alot. He can no longer sing the 70's stuff very well live. See 2112 on All the World's a Stage vs. Grace under Pressure DVD.

In Rush's 70's work, his singing is at the top of my list of best vocal performances of all time. Some people say he souds like a girl, just screams or is annoying, but I love his 70's singing more than any other singer.

Absolutely priceless! LOLLOLLOL

Hilarious! I agree, although I like his voice on Caress Of Steel and All The World's A Stage, I admit he did sometimes go a tad 'over the top' Embarrassed

His voice probably divides men and women more than any other when it comes to listening to prog.
I have yet to play Rush to a woman (my wife included) and have her say 'what a good voice he's got.'
Usually, the response is, after five mins or less: 'What a noise!' Cry

I agree word by word with iguana!
Maybe except the fact that they have never been my favourite group...despite being amazing songwriters and performers!

I Think he had a better voice in 70's

His voice is at it's best on Exit.. stage Left IMO. Without screams, but very clean and easy in his high-pitched notes. On A Show of Hands and mainly on Different Stages and onward he has problems with early songs.. So the early 80s' are the best years for him.

I prefer his 80's vox but he's still got the worst vocals in rock..........period.

I found the abrasive quality of his voice in the 70s to be perfect. The 80s material wouldn't have worked with that voice, but I still enjoy it more.
