Good day fellow prog-heads !  I need your help in finding instrumental-only albums in the same vein as Ozric Tentacles, Helmet of Gnats, Karfagen, etc.  I find the genre very interesting because brilliant music is often overshadowed by vocals (good or bad).  Thanks in advance.
p.s. please don't talk to me about Magma...I tried 'em and hated 'em (sorry)Dead

Not entirely instrumental, but it's only got a couple minutes of singing on one track. A classic Canterbury album with some strong jazz influences. http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=3237 - Soft Machine's Third

Thanks member_profile.asp?PF=326&FID=51 - Fitzcarraldo , I had a sneak peak at Goblin (the available track on PA, and on the band's website)  Really interesting indeed.

I suppose you can enjoy The Enid (1st ~ 4th), Er.J.Orchestra, Mongol, Lalena, Weather Report (1st ~ Domino Theory). But Domino Theory includes a vocal track. Cry

Gryphon/Red Queen To Gryphon Three
Ain Soph/A Story Of Mysterious Forest
Soft Machine/Softs
Brand X/Livestock
Shylock/Ile De Fievre
etc may be interesting for you ?? Smile

You could give Tangerine Dream a listen but they're electronic so you many not be interested.

As a matter of fact, I'm not.
but thanks anyways

No problem I still think you should give them a brief listen, I wasn't interested in electronic music until I gave them a try I'm now looking to explore it a bit more. I think there are a few mp3s here.

All right then, any albums in particuliar ?

I'm not really an expert but Phaedra,  Rubycon, Ricochet and Stratosfear are all very good.

There are some mp3s in their profile which give you a fairly good idea of how TD sound, in their case I would give them a listen before you spend any money.

One of my favorite newer instrumental prog albums http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=6124 - Guapo: Five Suns or Black Omi. Dark, heavy and melodic, a bit similar to KC 73-74.

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=2736 - Flamen Dialis
http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1097 - Maneige (three first)
http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=7062 - Dedalus (debut)
http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=7889 - Tangle Edge: Tarka
http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=7889 - Morte Macabre
http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=5220 - Sensation's Fix: Portable Madness
http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=983 - National Health

Shylock, Tangerine Dream (Phaedra might be a good start), and Soft Machine (Third) are great suggestions.

There's hundreds, maybe thousands of great ones out there, really. Since you stated you hate Magma (probably my favorite band) I stayed away from the extreme, very experimental bands and albums.

I just stumbled across an excerpt from Guapo's Five Suns (five suns ii), YEAH! Thumbs UpThat's the kind of stuff I like !!  Can't wait to try your other suggestions Rocktopus....
I did give TD a chance and so far (for what i can hear on their site) i might get used to this "electronic prog".
And, no.  Magma is way too extreme for me.Confused

Morte Macabre I did enjoy as well, for what I could stumble upon.
And I'm listening to National Health in the background...  I don't know why but it kind of reminds me of Gentle Giant (which I love) without vocals !

A lot of Post Rock and Jazz/Fusion is iinstrumental, as noted by earlier posts.

A few recs

TNT  Tortoise

Enigmatic Oceans - Jean-Luc Pontry

The Grand Wazoo - FZ, I like it more than Waka-Jawaka, although "Big Swift is ana amzing song.

Nova Express  - NebelNest French Avant-Gade, soudn a  lot like King Crimson. Good Stuff.

Amarok - Mike Oldfield 60 Minute Title Track, Oldfield uses over 60 instruments, very pastoral and

avant-garde.  One of his best albums.

PFM's Stati Di Immaginazione is going to be mine next choice, that's for sure.  And Ain Soph's A Story Of Mysterious Forest, as recommended by member_profile.asp?PF=4647&FID=51 - honganji Clap, is sure to follow.
I did notice the fact that most instrumental bands are from the Jazz/Fusion sub-category.  I wasn't drawn to this genre at first but I have to say that a couple of real gems are hidden in there...  Thanks for keeping the replies coming in Thumbs Up

Check out Cabezas de Cera, in a couple of songs they speak, but their music is instrumental, original and great.
