Many of the bands listed on the site shown as emanating from England, Scotland and Wales actually contain members from two or sometimes all three countries. Marillion (Fish era) and Gentle Giant are two bands which come to mind straight away.

The present separate listings for these countries has therefore been abolished in favour of a single entry for the United Kingdom. Any bands from Northern Ireland would of course also appear under United Kingdom.

No change to the forum countries.

Sounds sensible to me.
However it was interesting to know for exmple that Gnidrolog originated in Wales, although one of Goldring brothers is now council of Lewisham (?), which is borough of London, I guess.

I understand SD. In fact there was very little maintenance to be done for the change in terms of reassigning bands.

The intermingling of the home country races meant that the current tags were inaccurate and confusing. Many of the bands should in reality have been multinational!Confused

The biographies can of course be updated to specify the country of the UK where required, although i think many will already do so.

Fine! And if it's noticeable and distinguished, like Gnidrolog or Beggar's Opera, bios may inform their backgrounds. Thumbs Up

I think Snow Dog was talking about "one of Goldring brothers is now council of Lewisham (?), which is borough of London, I guess." When they are from Wales.

I like the Untied Kingdom idea. Thumbs Up

in the search box of the menu from the home page, you type the country and it will show you all the bands registered from that country.

While I understand the rationale, I'm not so sure that it was all that confusing a concept. Although members may be "multi-national", I think its fair to say that most bands have tended to be reasonably comfortable with their "association" to a particular country.

Despite Tony R's disparaging remarks Wink, it's particularly bad for bands or artists who ARE "pure-bred" (so to speak). Just this week, I've been checking out the music of Marc Carlton, a Scottish musician featured here on PA. Had it not been for his "Scotland" tag, it's unlikely that I would have clicked on his link.

I'm disappointed in this move. Disapprove

it was the idea of a Scotsman initially....

I guess if we were to get lots of genuine complaints with balanced, well argued reasoning then possibly,we might reconsider...IMO.

Comments noted. It does mean though that Fish's Marillion era is not now under England, and that gentle Giant are more accurately reflected for example.

As long as the nationality is mentioned in the biography, a search on the home page will find the reference to it.

I prefer the seperate countries (Wales, England and Scotland), but bands like Marillion do have mixed UK nationalities, so I guess having seperate UK countries and a whole United Kingdom, option did seem odd at the time, even I didn't understand that first time round.

Question: If a band is from Northern Ireland would they be placed under "United Kingdom" or "Ireland".

Because there is a United Kingdom option I guess the Channel Islands and Isle of Man could count as "United Kingdom"Confused

(But I've read in some encyclopaedias that the Channel Islands are not scrictly UK island, as the islands have there own laws and stuff).

Northern Irish bands would come under UK, Republic of Ireland would be Ireland. Don't ask about what we'd do they are a mixture of both!Confused

I think we'll worry about the Channel Islands etc. if they ever produce a prog band!Wink

The Pentangle, Clive Original Band, Incredible String Band, String Driven Thing, Donovan and many more. Scotland's major contribution has through folk rock.

Have anyone mentioned NAZARETH, also?

It was done by a Scott, who is a brother in fighting them Saxon and Angles out of your hills.

But really , this is like in sports, I do not see why Scotland , Wales, NI and England get to send out a team  each (After the all the real official country is know as UK >> even inside the EEC), while France cannot sent a Britany,  Alsace and  Corsican teams or Spain with a Catalonian, A Basque and and Galician team.

GBR means Great Britain and normally does not include NOrth Ireland.

United Kingdom does as well as the the Channel islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Sark) and Man.

But my remarks apply to team sports like Rugby and Football.

We have a band of Scots running the UK cabinet and far from decent most would agree - when they have a perfectly good (?) Scottish parliament too.Wink
