As some of you might have noticed by now, I'm a HUGE Dream Theater fan. I was just wondering if anyone knows of any bands (from the archives maybe?) who sound similar to Dream Theater?
Please don't recommend 70's stuff that you like, but bands (from any era) which actually have a similar sound/style to Dream Theater (or Symphony X).
Thanks in advance.

Have you heard 'Ayreon - the human equation'? (with James Labrie). A classic.

Here you have a few bands worth exploring. There are mp3 samples of many of them in this site, so you can have an idea of how Dream Theaterish they are ![](smileys/smiley2.gif)
Angra, Ark, Empty Tremor, Enchant, Evergrey, Ice Age, Mind Key, Pagan's Mind, Royal Hunt, Shadow Gallery, Threshold, Vanden Plas, Zero Hour
And of course many more... Enjoy!!!

Pain of Salvation is the only other prog metal band I can stomach. They make real mind music, despite the heavy riffs.
But really, prog's not about bands that sound the same. It's about bands that are different - VERY different - so I'd implore you to open your mind to a wealth of astounding music you've probably yet to experience. A good stepping stone might be "Liquid Tension Experiment" - a side project featuring some members of Dream Theatre that fuses heavy metal with a bit of funk, a bit of jazz, a bit of sympho and a LOT of fun to create a very flashy and enjoyable sound. Well worth anyone's time and money.

That's also my favourite prog metal band, but I didn't want to mention it, due to the "similar to Dream Theater" constrain. PoS are wonderful, but they are not similar to DT are they? ![](smileys/smiley2.gif)
Oh, and Valarius, I also presumed that you already know bands like Fates Warning, Queensryche or Savatage so I only posted more recent ones...

TILES
They opened for DT a few years ago. Their newest disc, Window Dressing, is pretty heavy. Get the special edition with a second live disc from that tour.

Check out
Pagan's Mind - Celestial Entrance
One of the better prog metal albums I've heard in years.

Pain Of Salvation are by far superior to DT. You might check Fates Warning and Psychotic Waltz also. Or maybe even Arena (they got some reasonably heavy parts as well).

There are many DT clones out there, but I refuse to recommend any of them. ![](smileys/smiley17.gif)
However, for prog metal that sounds a bit different, try Ark and Pain Of Salvation.

I like Queensryche they're style is their own, but I can see a few similarities in Queensryche as Dream Theater. The song "Mission" is good and you can listen to that from this site.

Transatlantic all the way. If you like DT's style, I'd recommend trying the Liquid Tension Experiment.
