Post Heavy Prog bands that aren't metal or directly related to metal, like
being on the hard rock/heavy metal border, my list may help you see my
definition of heavy Amon Duul II - first three albums are very heavy, and Eye Shaking King might as well be the heaviest song ever written Mahavishnu Orchestra - goddamn they were heavy Guru Guru - possibly the dirtiest music ever made (that is still very listenable) King Crimson - generally a heavy atmosphere to their music but the always managed to knock you to the floor at least once on an album Magma - very weird, very dark, very heavy some honorable mentions ELP, Nektar, Univers Zero , German Oak, Lard Free, Ash Ra Tempel Aaron |

Many modern KC-inspired bands: Anglagard, Anekdoten, Landberk, Liquid Scarlet, etc. Zeuhl seems to be pretty heavy overall. In addition to Magma, Dun have some heavy moments, and Ruins seem more like avant punk than anything else.  A lot of Avant/RIO stuff in general is, such as Taal's Skymind and Henry Cow.-------------

Try White Willows album, Storm Season. The second guitar player is riffing and sounds like a metal player but overall the music isnt metal at all. Wobbler can get a bit heavy, especially in Rubatto Industry and Clair Obscur Tiles are very similar to Rush so they're an obvious choice. Strangefish are heavy but can sound very upbeat. Proto-Kaw are another obvious group due to their relationship with Kansas ------------- Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

Explosions In The Sky are surprisingly heavy and loud, especially in concert. "Greet Death" is by far their most intense song. -------------

| Some modern ones: Taal, Nemo, Muse (not Prog, but on this site as Prog related...), Pure Reason Revolution (they have a couple of pretty heavy moments) and of course modern KC. |

Night Sun's only album mournin is very heavy,a bit like sabbath with organ, Atomic Rooster's death walks behind you, Il Balleto Di Bronzo's YS is very dark and heavy, the guitars have that hendrix influence, Comus' First Utterance has some heavy moments, and Blackwater Park's dirtbox ------------- What is prog rock ? It is music that does progress. Progressive music takes a riff, turns it inside out, plays it upside down and the other way around, and explores its potential. K.Emerson |

I love heavy prog bands which are NOT Prog metal.I like some Prog metal,but no the most(and I say ABSOLUTELY NO to Power-Prog metal,sorry).This is always a surprise to find that Prog band ROCKS! While Porcupine Tree or PRR have their guitars tuned in D,they are not Metal...anyway,they are pretty ROCKY...
Same goes to Scandinavian Prog - even guitarless parts in ANEKDOTEN music are heavy due to Jan Erik's wonderful roaring bass! Listen to Russian LITTLE TRAGEDIES - they are growing heavier and heavier!!! I always loved this ROCKY side more then simply METAL one.Listen to "Get'em Out By Friday" - it ROCKS and it needs no low-tuned guitars or two bass-drum drumkits...and it's beautiful! |

Obviously Crimson -- the terriffic The Power to Believe is about as close to modern metal as my collection gets. Awesome power -- even scary at times! IQ can be rather heavy (at least to my old ears), especially with some guitar work that's "metal-esque." (I like it though -- when they "cook," they really cook!)
Another guy who can really rock, and bring in metal elements (despite being listed under "prog folk, last time I checked) is multi-instrumentalist Steve Unruh. (He's really all over the place, stylistically -- another example of the inexact process of assigning narrow genres to artists, who "care not" for our restrictive categories.)
Porcupine Tree can be really heavy at times, too (too much for me -- I also find their stuff too overtly derivitive of Floyd for my tastes).
Finally, good old Steve Hackett can really get heavy, at times. Check out tracks like "Mechanical Bride," "A Tower struck Down," etc.  ------------- "And, has thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!' He chortled in his joy. |

What about Steve Howe - Quantum Guitar? Compares well to the John Petrucci solo album.

| Hella are heavy in a metal-esque way at times. Though one of the heaviest things I've heard is the Swedish band Kvartetten Som Sprängde's only album Kattvals from 1973. Unfortunately, it's extremely hard to find (never re-issued on CD). |
