Well, it happened, Hussein is dead. Executed by hanging. I have mixed emotions on the subject. First of all, I was shouting for joy when the man was removed from power (though I never quite got to the extreme of Iraqis, it is not smart to shoot guns straight up ) However, I am strongly opposed to the use of the death penalty (and a Conservative too! The ideas mix, really!)
When I found out about Saddam's death, I prayed, I prayed for the man's eternal soul, I prayed God would have mercy on him. Then I found myself thinking, what kind of a man am I to be praying for a ruthless, murdering dictator? Then I realized, I am a Christian, a real Christian, and I knew, for the first time in my life, what it meant to truly do what Jesus said, and love my enemy. The world is probably better off without him, but I think as God truly works in mysterious ways, Saddam taught my a valuable lesson, bet that would piss him off.
Anyway, just wanted to share that, sorry for the personal story in there, but the real news is Saddam Hussein was executed, so there.

Amen to that.
Mixed emotions here as well. I will offer an Iron Maiden song to Saddam: Hallowed be Thy Name.

Not only that, but I believe Iraq will be easier to handle-at least a little. Once people realize, holy crap, the last dictator is power is DEAD, not just in a minor setback, but DEAD, some of the radical Imams will probably not be as keen on being the next power hungry, maniac dictator

But wasn't he hung?....
I'm not exactly a supporter of the death penalty, but I feel this is a very extreme case of murder under his regime that could possibly come close to justifing his hanging...but I'm still very uncertain how I feel.

This is wat my God told me:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the gentle,
for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness,
for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God.
Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake,
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
"Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
"You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men. You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can't be hidden. Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house. Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
"Don't think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I didn't come to destroy, but to fulfill. For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished. Whoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments, and teach others to do so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
"You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, 'You shall not murder;' and 'Whoever shall murder shall be in danger of the judgment.' But I tell you, that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment; and whoever shall say to his brother, 'Raca!' shall be in danger of the council; and whoever shall say, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of the fire of Gehenna. "If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are with him in the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison. Most certainly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there, until you have paid the last penny.
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery;' but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna. If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna.
"It was also said, 'Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,' but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries her when she is put away commits adultery.
"Again you have heard that it was said to them of old time, 'You shall not make false vows, but shall perform to the Lord your vows,' but I tell you, don't swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God; nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Neither shall you swear by your head, for you can't make one hair white or black. But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes' and your 'No' be 'No.' Whatever is more than these is of the evil one.
"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you, don't resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. If anyone sues you to take away your coat, let him have your cloak also. Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and don't turn away him who desires to borrow from you.
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.' But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you, that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don't even the tax collectors do the same? If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Don't even the tax collectors do the same? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Verses 22-27. And when men shall quarrel, and shall strike a pregnant woman, and her births go forth, and harm is nor done, with fining he shall be fined, as the woman‘s master shall lay upon him; and he shall give according to the judges. And if harm is done, then thou shalt give soul for soul, eye for eye tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for wound, blow for blow. And when a man shall smite the eye of his manservant, or the eye of his maidservant, and shall destroy it; he shall let him go free for his eye. And if he shall knock out his manservant’s tooth, or his maidservant‘s tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth.

Hate to quote Wikipedia... but I really don't feel like finding a better source right now...
"Most Christian scholars and commentators have agreed that such an
interpretation is a misunderstanding of this section of Matthew. The
"Expounding of the Law" includes a series of six sayings in similar
format, known as the " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antithesis - antitheses ". In each of them Jesus quotes the provisions of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_Law - Jewish Law
without criticism - indeed, the passage is prefaced by a ringing
endorsement of the Law as whole. However he then calls on his followers
to go further than the Law demands, in order to "Be perfect". It seems
clear Jesus was not criticising the law, but calling on his followers
not only to refrain from the abuses the Law condemns, but to go to the
opposite extreme by exercising forgiveness and love — even when one has
a just claim to vengeance."

And thus claiming that the law was a past thing, replacing it with a new law, and a new interpretation. Leaving intact the previous notion, and keeping the people who lived within and following that law prior to his arrival within his kingdom. The old law didn't count anymore as he was there to replace the old believe and the old law with a new commitment from God to men to accept jesus's sacrifice to fulfill the prophecy and allowing people to follow into the Kingdom Of heaven.
or something like that.
jesus's Crusifixion was still the fulfillment according to the Old law, for indeed he didn't invalidated them, he re-wrote them and his death sealed the new pact, within the confines of the old-pact (old testament).

I personally don’t think killing one, already subdued person will solve anything.

Gotta love the fractured English. Really makes you look intelligent. "We dun-did president should kill!"
But yeah... what you were *trying* to say was just as ignorant.

Just remembering that English is the second (or third) language of more than 50% of PA members. The common sense adopted by old fellows is not to take in consideration minor errors done by "foreigners". Thanks and let's keep civil the thread!

Like Scapler, I have mixed feelings about Saddam's execution. It is good that he was taken out of power, but I feel that execution was not the right answer. I think a life term in prison would have been better. It would not cause as much outrage as killing him.

My opinion on the subject:
I think that any execution is a sad event and should not be cause for celebration. Independently of whether you support capital punishment or not, it's a fact that any punishment won't bring back those who he had killed. So, rather than celebrating his death, we should be mourning the victims.
@tuxon: there is no such thing as pure black and pure white in these matters IMO.

The were showing the moments before Saddams hanging on the news a few seconds ago. Apparently they made a video of it. But luckily they didn't show the actual death. But still I do not want to see them puting the noose around his neck.

This execution was so quickly done, that it worse than a murder. Ever heard of proper appeals????.... (even if Saddam was not the kind to allow appeals).
I propose Bush goes on trial (the same one that tried Saddam or the one in The Hague) for the many more deaths of Iraqians than 30 years of Saddam regime.
Pinochet dies in bed because he was pro-US (or anti-communist) and Saddam is executed because he was anti-US (and at first pro-communist >> the Baas party was of communist obedience in the 60 and 70's)
This murder is properly scandalous.(more in the manner than on the whole of the charges)
The least they could've done is put him to a firing squad as he had requested.
And this execution is only the start of more unrest.

Bertrand Russell did a trial of LBJ for war crimes in late 60s... no effective action only the legitimate issue.
Talking about Saddam's execution, I think he should die in prison as old as possible, gathering manure, ironing clothes, sweeping floors, etc. Now he became a martyr!

I agree with you.
Other opinions in the same vein:
FATHER FEDERICO LOMBARDI, VATICAN SPOKESMAN
"A capital punishment is always tragic news, a reason for sadness, even if it deals with a person who was guilty of grave crimes...
The killing of the guilty party is not the way to reconstruct justice and reconcile society. On the contrary, there is a risk that it will feed a spirit of vendetta and sow new violence."
RICHARD DICKER, HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH
"Saddam Hussein was responsible for massive human rights violations, but that can't justify giving him the death penalty, which is a cruel and inhuman punishment...
The test of a government's commitment to human rights is measured by the way it treats its worst offenders...
It defies imagination that the Appeals Chamber could have thoroughly reviewed the 300-page judgment and the defence's written arguments in less than three weeks' time... The appeals process appears even more flawed than the trial..."

Sorry, RA but you obviously don't know what you are talking about.
Canada has two equal official languages. English and French. (The majority of Quebecers, for example, speak French as their mother tongue.)
We also have many immigrants whose first language is neither English nor French, and the most ethnically-diverse city in the world -- Toronto.
