I actually like 4 of those and have regularly listened to all but the supremes. I guess its the Beatles but not because the others are terrible. Elvis had some great music as well so its kinda a toss up between him and the Beatles.

Clearly MENUDO.
They were the best possible band anywhere, ever -- past, present or future (or in any other posited time-space dimensions).
To maintain otherwise is rank ignorance, or basest ignoble self-deception.

could this be any easier? I know you selected them based on chart positions, but come on, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Mariah Carey. Zeppelin should be here. They are the top selling hard rock band and, if I recall correctly, all of their albums have gone at least platinum. The Supremes, Elton and Stevie are great, but The Beatles win in a landslide.

I have two candidates, both of recent exposure: one, mexican masterband RBD, a group of youngsters full of talent, musical knowledge, professional skills, beauty, sex-appeal, I mean, truly they are above the rest. You should see their vocal approach toward their songs: it´s a mix of baroque-poliphonic singing mixed with dodecaphonic and serial elements learned from Webern, with some grindcore elements thrown in for good. You should pay attention when the two female singers get the spotlight, then the harmonic balance that the masculine singers give to the music is just worthy of a place of honor in modern music theory. The other artist is reggaetton´s master mind Don Omar: before Daddy Yankee, there was Don Omar. His hit "pobre diabla" easily outclasses any music since Guilliame De Machaut.
But all of these PALE in comparison to MASTER OF MASTERS EL GENERAL. This center-american ethereal artist crafted some of the best lyrics ever, comparing women to coca-cola bottles and using the common metaphor of the banana to refer to a certain body part, but he gave us more than poetry: he gave us music of unexpected simplicity yet unearthly beauty, taking the language of the notes to new heights that even Bach and Beethoven wouldn´t be able to reach were they alive to listen to the master´s work.
This even tops Arjona, my most hated artist of all time.

No contest. From that list, only Presley can approach the influence of The Beatles. And there's so many other great artists missing - Buddy Holly, Hendrix, Brian Wilson to name but a few. They may not compare sales-wise but they are all far superior to the likes of Mariah Carey.

Man, that poll sucks! My vote would be Pink Floyd. But where is King Crimson? Genesis? THe only thing closest to prog on that poll is the Beatles, and they only had one song that was even close to prog, and that was A Day in the Life. And quite a few on that poll have sucky music also.

If you really think these are the best ARTISTS ever, then the world has been a much less interesting place than I thought. Say "20th century pop-music artists" or something like that.... ARTIST EVER means from all time, and believe me, all of these put together don't even reach the top 200.
Besides, artists like MAriah...please, she sings, I give you that, and she SELLS, but does she write her music? She's a PERFORMER....
But if we HAVE to pick one just for this poll's sake, let's say Elvis or The Beatles.

Fashion and videos
ABBA was widely noted for the colourful and trend-setting costumes its members wore. The videos which accompanied some of their biggest hits are often cited as being among the earliest examples of the genre. Though The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Who, Bob Dylan and others had made several videos, making promotional videos still hadn't become the industry standard by the early-to-mid 1970s.[ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources -

It contained the memorable and amusing line "one of us is ugly, one of us is cute, one of us you'd like to see in her birthday suit", these words alluding to the attractions of the two female vocalists - though for many the 'contest' was not as clear cut as this indicates, with many preferring Lyngstad's darkness (in style and image as well as voice) to Fältskog's blonde image.
