^ ok, but when a member does all the posts in bold/uppercase/increased font size, it loses any useful meaning.
BTW: It's banned in many other forums, too. It causes other people to also increase their font size/writing uppercase etc..

I can't decide what to vote. First I hate seeing posts in all caps, but I do it occasionally but not too often (I hope), but I hate seeing it abused. I guess I will vote yes. Because it could get abused and that would get out of hand.

italics are needed on a music forum as the proper way to quote a title is by typing (the title, not the author) it with italics. to be more specific, the overall title should be written in italics (the book's name, the album's name, the magazine's name, etc) and any inside title should be written normally but with quotation marks. also the author's name should be spelled with uppercase letters, but this is not mandatory.
an example:
John DOE, "Aesthetics today" in Journal of Philosphy, nr. 1/2006 pp. 21-44 (article quotation)
PINK FLOYD, "Time", Dark Side of the Moon, 1973 (song quotation)
Neica NIMENI, Tratat de nimicologie, cap. 1 - "La inceput a fost nimicul" pp. 3-30, Bucharest, 2007 (chapter quotation)
back to topic, i wouldn't like losing "bold" and "italic" options from post formating as i sometimes need to make a bold statement or to define a more subtle nuance. i don't use capitals but enjoy when some others play with them, it can be funny. i see you haven't put colours in the poll, if you did that i would have suggest to also include Peter Rideout for outlawing

This would be a valid remark if there were not these huge signatures at the bottom of most posts.
I say Mike's idea for a new forum rule should be implemented.

I haven't seen a single argument here as to why we should ban large font and bold....just people stating a preference.
On most forums members "police" this themselves by explaining to the "offender(s)" that it is poor forum etiquette, or posting "why are you shouting at me?"
Something could be added to the "Site Rules and Guidelines" about forum etiquette, however to make a rule about this seems both excessive and pedantic.
I too think that very large signatures exhibit bad manners on the part of the forum member.

Those making constant uses of it actually go against the grain (intentionally or not) or have an inferiority complex, wanting their words to come across as the utmost and complete truth.
I personally choose to bold (and color) my replies in a quote, but normally nobody takes that as a shout, because I do not upper case it. More than the bolding, it is the constant uppercase that is tiresome to me.
This being said, I rarely read El Bothy's posts because of his choice of character policy, as I rarely read also Yukorin's italic and centered posts. Not because I do not like them or do not care for what they say, but I find it troublesome and not worth the effort.
Something could be added to the "Site Rules and Guidelines" about forum etiquette, however to make a rule about this seems both excessive and pedantic. Not really, as the simple fact that the sentence is there can be used to prevent abuse and even serve as grounds to excusion if necessary (in terms of trolls a.o.)

I thought one could express himself with some sort of freedom here, but
it seems there are people that get offended way to easily.
I´m starting to see Lostchords point of view of this site more and more.
This is clearly a thread made against me, you might as well have
written "Should el böthy keep on writing in bold letters?". If now, I
cant write in bold letters, whats next? Someone will come and say my
avatar is offensive cause he doesnt like the Muppets?
I will stop using this bold letters, not because some dont like it, but because it can bring trouble in the future for newer members and I dont want to be held responsable for it.
It´s a shame, I thought the forum was way more open minded that what it really is. I dont use bold letters so my words get more attention or because I think I have the holy truth, nor cause Im shouting. I am very disapointed with some of you, and others I just cant care anymore

In any case, rather than attempting to heavy-handedly "legislate" forum font manners or "morality," I think "netiquette" should take care of itself.
A little reply like "stop SHOUTING at me" should suffice. The "offender" may not even realise he is being "rude" according to common accepted practice.
Let the "court of public opinion" handle such matters -- I think it generally does the job well.

I guess some times you just have to use a lot of uppercase letters to express yourself in situations where lowercase does not suffice(imitating shouting, expressing anger or similar feelings).
But I think most people have enough common sense to understand that consequently typing with caps lock on is annoying for the other members of the forum, and thus reconcider their way of typing. If they don't, we can simply ignore their posts or choose not to take them seriously; like Peter Rideout said: Let the "court of public opinion" handle such matters
