Frenchie just stated that Yes's TFTO is a very advanced state of prog... Arcer seems to think the same about BSS.... They are those "over the top" prog albums that people seem to either love or hate... So what prog albums do you consider to be advanced prog... those albums that you really have to be a fan... to actually get (understand).. or love???

Well I would definitely say VdGG falls into that catagory....All of their material, as well as most of Gentle Giant's material...all could be defined as "advanced prog"
King Crimson-Lark's Tongue in Aspic
Most of classic Krautrock, Zeuhl, and RIO sub genres is a love-hate sort of thing as well.

I agree with gdub about VDGG. Most people I know think prog is a joke full stop, but even they can becaught occasionally appreciating Pink Floyd or even Rush, but when I've played them VDGG, they just roll their eyes and think there must be something wrong with me for liking it..
I think the same applies with Yes, for evey album up and including 'Relayer'

'Advanced prog' is a weird term. Isn't prog advanced music already? Kinda like 'progger than prog'.
Why don't I like ELP while I like most other 'big' names in prog? Are they more advanced than the rest? Don't think so...

Well ELP were more advanced... that goes without saying!!!
However, I agree that I think Gentle Giant were also advanced prog... as well as King Crimson in all its forms...

If you don't like TMR, it's pretty hard to like anything else he's ever done.

Yep, VDGG, Crimson's Lizard, and Islands, as well as Gentle Giant. These acts/albums tend to polarize prog fans....
Can and Deus Ex Machina , too. The latter is particularly "difficult" stuff -- not for the "faint of heart," wot wot!
Magma -- nuff said!

Selling England by the Pound? How is that "advanced prog"?
And I agree with what was said above... advanced prog? What exactly does that mean?

It means it ain't the prog yo mamma listens to!!
it means that prog album or band that's a little too bombastic and pretentious to be appreciated by non prog or middle of the road prog fans....

hmm, i'd say those:
Pink Floyd - Atom Heart mother suite
GYBE
Gong maybe?
Yes (TFTO and Relayer) and VDGG (as said before)
and i dont agree on the Genesis and Camel albums mentioned, also Close to the Edge is not really advanced prog, since so many people like it. (it still is a very complex album of course, but not more challenging than the average prog IMO)
I'm not sure if BSS is really advanced prog .... it's more a kind of music taste, not that its that hard to get into.

Foxtrot???
I believe it's the most popular album here, and almost no proghead dislikes Supper's Ready, Watcher of the Slies or Can Utility and the Coastliners.
Selling England by the Pound???
I believe is the most radio friendly Gabriel Genesis album.

Some of the most advanced prog I've ever heard is from:
- Anglagard
- A Triggering Myth
And I love them both. A Triggering Myth is especially good, but remain
one of progs most undiscovered treasures. I don't think they've ever
release a bad piece of music. But to be sure, it some pretty intense
stuff ... it definitely makes a lot of other prog stuff sound almost
bubble gum.

Likewise I have trouble with the ambiguity of the term. For me, I would suggest 'advanced prog' is music by a band or heard on an album, which you struggled to get into but by persistence achieved that state, AND still heard something new on on every listening. I would suggest Henry Cow, Robert Wyatt (especially End Of An Ear), Soft Machine, and much of RIO (e.g. Univers Zero) and perhaps Pierre Henry/Spooky Tooth's ceremony (which Ultima Thule shop in Leicester have on their shelves labelled with the guidance: "Amongst the most difficult prog albums around").

Grobschnitt - Solar Music Live
One of those albums I keep going back to, as I can appreciate the musical abilities of the band members, but can't get my head around what they are trying to do
Either I'm thick, or this is too advanced for me

Good thread this.
I agree with Gdub that Van Der Graff Generator's output is a
challenging listen
along with a lot of the Crimson back catalogue. In truth, I've never
really thought of ELP as advanced prog. Complex and well arranged maybe
but for me, they tend to lay their
cards on the table in no uncertain terms which is no bad thing.
I always equate advanced prog with the ability to move beyond the 'big' sounds
of Genesis, Yes, Tull, Dream Theatre, etc who IMO exhibit a masterful knowledge
of mainstream harmony and use it to great effect but don’t take any real
chances with their compositions. For me I enjoy the kind of bands that like to
'stray off the path' a little into the world of dissonance or rhythmic
ambiguity and above all, are not afraid of doing what's right instead of what is
popular.
Zappa, Beefheart, Cardiacs, Adrian Belew, The Mars Volta (as a few prog related
examples) all exhibit to a greater or lesser extent that quality of advancement
that leave the majority of MOR fans looking on in bemusement. Personal taste aside,
to be advanced in my book is to ask something more of your audience that simply
buying a ticket, standing at the front of the auditorium and yelling for
'Grendel'.
Understanding that the two are not mutually exclusive, I suppose it depends if
you're after the entertainment more than the adventure.

See you guys all come up with your own terms.. and thats good. But I don't think its a question that needs to be limited to any one term. Everyone has their opinion on whats a little harder than others to be digested easily.
I look at ELP as being advanced in some respects. For instance, when BSS came out, I turned some friends on to Toccata for the first time.. Friends who were into ELP and Yes before.. but the minute they heard Toccata.. and to a lesser extent, KE9-2, they just looked at me and said... "What the hell was that"???

Advanced Prog - a better word would be "Ultra-Prog" - And The examples would be
- "Tales from Topographic Oceans" - Yes
- "Close to the Edge" - Yes
- "Relayer" - Yes
- "Going for the One" - Yes
- "Foxtrot" - Genesis
- "Selling England by the Pound" - Genesis
- "The lamb" - Genesis
- "Brain Salad Surgery" - ELP
- "Tarkus" - ELP
- "The Snow Goose" - Camel
- "Subterranea" - IQ
- "In the Region of the Summer Stars" - The Enid
- "Aerie Faerie Nonsense" - The Enid
These albums are the essence of prog (there are more but I got bored) - GYBE for example are avant-guarde noise makers and cacophony specialists, I think that "Ultra-Prog" needs to be symphonic and tuneful - with exquisite themes that are re-visited and ultra-competant muscianship - feel free to expand this list......

Step inside! Hello! We've the most amazing show
You'll enjoy it all we know
Step inside! Step Inside!
We've got thrills and shocks, supersonic fighting
cocks.
Leave your hammers at the box
Come Inside! Come Inside!
Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!
Left behind the bars, rows of Bishops' heads in jars
and a bomb inside a car
Spectacular! Spectacular!
If you follow me there's a speciality
some tears for you to see
Misery, misery,
Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!
Next upon the bill in our House of Vaudeville
We've a stripper in a till
What a thrill! What a thrill!
And not content with that, with our hands behind our
backs,
We pull Jesus from a hat,
Get into that! Get into that!
Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!
Quite offsetting to the older crowd!
