I smoke. I will be quitting yet again at new year. Like any addiction; drugs, gambling or whatever, smokers are not stupid, but they have a weakness IMO. I rue the day I ever started, and hate seeing teenagers - or kids! - smoking. Thankfully in the UK, smoking is becoming more of a chavs habit, and smokers are ever more being pushed into dingy siderooms, or our into the cold to indulge in their filthy habit, where it wont affect others. In July next year we wont be able to smoke in our pubs. Good!

Whats this poll doing here..?

^^ You'll be pleased to know that when I was 14, I tried a cigarette on the back of the school bus, and it didn't agree with me at all... I coughed my lungs up, had tears rolling down my eyes and all my mates laughed at me...

...all my mates who went on to smoke into 6th form and beyond....Ouch

Never smoked aside from trying a few of them in high school.

Regarding the debate about smoking & intelligence, some interesting statistics (don't ask how I know this, I memorize Almanacs in my spare time, no joke, I'm a huge nerd):

About 33% of people who never graduated high school consider themselves smokers, while only about 12% of people who graduated 4-year college are smokers (at least here in the U.S., but I'm willing to bet the stats are similar elsewhere).

Now, I know, it's debatable whether education level has anything to do with intelligence, but one thing's interesting: education level is correlated with salary, so the people who can least afford (money-wise) to smoke are the ones that do most often.

If you smoke, please stop. Prog-listeners are valuable human beings to have on this planet, it'd be a shame to lose you early.

Same here.

People that are anti-smoking act as if people who do smoke don't know that it damages your health.
I think a lot of smokers just think of the short term, I mean I enjoy smoking I think it feels great.

Of course when I first tried one it was absolutely horrible.

I could imagine if people didn't smoke the population would rise faster.

I smoke now and then. Then feel guilty and stop and then start again, etc. etc.

Smoking is like taking any other drug. Once you've tried it you know its effects and they are normally pleasurable. Even though you may stop the fact that you've once tried it means that you will always be susceptable to a relapse when temptation presents itself. The ban on smoking in public places comes in to place during 2007 in England. Hopefully that will mark my permanent cessation of dragging on the evil weed.

I'm currently "clean" but anticipate having the odd smoke after Christmas.

So do smokers

During the week, I'm down to 8/9 a day, if we go out, or to the pub etc, it's considerably more (there's something about a beer in one hand & a cigarette in the other... a balanced diet, you might say).

Like many, I think I'd like to quit, but as and when I do, I'll not make a big thing of it - if I do, I do, if I don't - well, that's life.

+++Koff+++

Hmmm - excuse me for a few minutes

IMO..

I dont think smoking is specifically linked to low intelligence. I'm not sure what the politically correct way of expressing this is, but I'm convinced that these days, there are not many smokers left in the UK, from 'middle class' backgrounds, with a university education. Smokers, as you rightly say, are usually those who cant really afford their habit. Gamblers and drug users are the same in principle. Smoking, like these other addictions, often fills a gap in someones life where there ought to be something more rewarding and meaningful. Every smoker I know, including myself has some kind of self respect/self esteem issue, and yes, not much money.

Can't say I've smoke a cigarette before, but I would not be opposed to it in certain circumstances.

I wish to be an actor in some aspect of my life, whether for a local theatre, for minor films, or whatever may come, and say what you will about their health detriments, cigarettes are a brilliantly effective prop if the circumstace is right. I don't wish to actively smoke at all, though. Maybe a cigar now or then with friends, but nothing regular.

My first time smoking a cigarette was actually this past summer with Joren and a friend of his.

I'll have a smoke under certain circumstances (generally while drunk), but I'm far from a regular smoker.
