I choose LZ... their 5 first albums are pioneers in heavy metal...

I also like Maiden but... if i compare or if you make me choose between them and Zep, DP or Sabbath... the options are logical...

Easy, Led Zeppelin by a very large margin. Iron Maiden are pretty good, but they don't interest me the least.

lLet's face the facts: both are fantastic bands, but Zeppelin is better. They were one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and Maiden is only one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time.

this is exactly what i was afraid of... sure, both bands are great but what are they doing here and why are they taking time from us while we could search and find out about tons of other prog bands their existence we ignore?

My thoughts exactly. I don't dislike Iron maiden and even went to see them in 1980 but there is just no comparison. Led Zeppelin win hands down for creativity, ability and innovation.

Zeppelin -- don't think I've even ever heard an IM song.

(I just know that they are a major metal band -- but I haven't cared for metal since around age twelve - thirteen, when I started getting into prog.)

What used to be called "hard rock" I can handle, and enjoy, and I don't mind encountering some "metallic" flavours in prog (Rush, Steve Morse, Steve Unruh, even IQ, etc) -- but flat-out metal just doesn't turn my crank. I find it to be too emotionally uni-dimensional, "cartoonish," or something.

There's lots of beauty along with all the power and testosterone, in LZ. No animated, murderous, bloody skeletons on their album covers, either.Wink

Surely these bands are from two different genres of rock?Stern Smile

funny poll, no similaritiers between the two.

musically Led seppelin is the better party, songwise Iron Maiden where better, but overall quality will always be in favour of Led. But i'm still inclined to vote for Iron Maiden, such beauty in their songs.

so I vote for Iron Maiden, does that make me a bad person.

They can't be compared!! come on!! what were you thinking about? may be that you are a real Fan of Maiden just to campare them with Zeppelin, but Zeppelin is part of the History of the begining of Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, besides they are the Base of many other bands that appeared after. I like maiden as well, but they are more important in Heavy Metal since 80's only.

This is very easy to choose, really.
One of the hundreds of reason is that without Led Zep, a band like Iron Maiden would not have existed. Period.

I'll go with the weak one here... I don't like Zepp's bluesy-style, neither do I Plant's vocals....I prefer The Maiden.

Really difficult to choose between the two for several reasons.

1. The bands are from different generations.

2. It's unfair to compare one classic band that quit making music 25 years ago to one who is still    recording and touring.

3. It's hare to compare two bands with such different sounds. Led Zeppelin is blues/rock and Iron Maiden is metal/rock.

And I could go on and on and on.

Bruce Dickinson and Steve Harris are better musicians. Jimmy Page is the better guitar player. And Led Zeppelin is more "progressive" than Iron Maiden. I also have to take into account which band changed the music scene more. Had Iron Maiden started in the 60's then they might have made more of an impact socially. If you listen to mainstream radio chances are you will hear Led Zeppelin but you WON'T hear Iron Maiden. Stairway to Heaven is a classic song. Houses of the Holy is one of my all time favorite albums. But Iron Maiden has several classic albums as well.

This is like comparing apples to oranges. Both are great. But I guess I can choose only one.

In the end I have to choose Led Zeppelin.

Typical young boy observation. One thing is to like Maiden more than Zep; another is to confess ignorance about Zep and, in the same sentence, make a wanna-be sarcastic comment.

BTW, this comment teachs a lot about some overrated groups in this site (I'm talking about the prog metal outfits).

Like both and have all their albums, but of course Zep is invencible in this dispute.

Iron Maiden has been my favorite band for many years. Led Zeppelin is OK, but I'm not a huge fan. They have some good songs, but nothing too special. Iron Maiden has done some of the greatest songs ever, for example Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and Alexander the Great.

I think I haven't voted in this poll yet - mainly because I think these two bands can't be compared. Therefore, instead of expressing a vote, I'll just add my two eurocents to the debate...

Probably, without LZ there wouldn't be an IM, at least as regards the former's influence on the formation of heavy metal as a genre. However, LZ weren't just the initiators of heavy metal - they dabbled in most genres, and this is one of the reasons why I think such a comparison is unfair.

However, IM are one of the very best examples of heavy metal made by serious, professional musicians who happen to be smart people as well. They have created an unmistakable sound without getting stuck in a rut, and have influenced many bands, both in 'straight' metal and in Prog Metal (Queensryche, anyone?).

Iron Maiden where influenced by Rush (who were influenced by Zep) who were also the prime influence of Queeensryche. Zep are one of the most influential bands ever.

quite right, Raf... back in 1985, Queensryche, between The Warning & Rage For Order, were the support band for the Iron Maiden 'World Slavery' Tour... from which came 'Live After Death'... their influence most certainly rubbed off...Wink

Yes, Led Zeppelin is influential, "important" etc etc etc.... But that doesn't necessarily mean that it's good. I like Iron Maiden more than I like Led Zeppelin, even though Iron Maiden isn't as influential as LZ. I bet Elvis has influenced many different artists, but how many of you like Elvis because of that? I like some Led Zeppelin songs, for example Immigrant Song, which is excellent. Still, Led Zeppelin is a bit overrated band in my opinion, they just don't have songs like Alexander the Great, Rime of the Ancient Mariner of Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

And I also think that this poll is a bit stupid.

The pioneers of hard rock vs one of the pioneers of the second wave of heavy metal.

Hmm - can't really compare them, as both are very different - it's difficult to hear Zeppelin in Maiden's music (which is quite unusual for a second wave heavy metal band, although not as unusual as the almost complete absence of either Sabbath or Priest).

Zeppelin were not really original - they just extended the heavy blues sounds already in existence.

Maiden took the energy of punk...

Oh hang on - that's the decider.

Can't vote for the punk influenced ones... LOL

Pointless? I don't think so. Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden represent two very important steps in the evolution of 1970s hard rock into 1980s heavy metal. Expressing appreciation for one these bands in a prog-rock forum also means revealing your own point of view regarding prog: in my opinion, if you choose Led Zeppelin you're also saying that you consider prog more a 1960s/1970s phenomenon, focusing on the evolution of rock and experimentation in a given period. On the contrary, if you choose Iron Maiden, you regard prog more as a style. For me, therefore, this thread is pretty interesting.

Diversity makes this site/forum a great one Smile

Your point is interesting, but I stick to my opinion, because if you link artists based in the history of rock development, then you could as well compare Led Zepellin with Dream Theater, Iron Maiden with Kamelot , Deep Purple with Opeth, and almost everyone with almost everyone. Confused

On the other hand of course, if we reduce everything to a matter of taste then we must chose the one we like the most no matter how different the artists are compared to each other.
