Now, Deep Purple is considered prog by some...but what about Slaves and Masters (Deep Rainbow, as called by some) the lone album by Joe Lynn Turner (and my favorite)...What would you put that under? Prog or AOR???

Taking love the only way
It's got to just flow
Making love and taking time to let it grow

I've always thought it is a hard rock album. Personally I like this album a lot, but unfortunately it is quite bashed, being considered by many DP's worst album.

That's a load of crap...I really like that album, Joe was just trying to do his best in a "Deep Rainbow" situation...

Certainly AOR... first two tracks are great... the next 7 are just fillers IMHO...

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I love the song Too Much is Not Enough! The album doesn't have any week points (to me) it's underrated really. People judge it before they even hear it.

It's a great rock album, but it's nowhere near prog.
i don't think Purple belong on PA Thumbs Down

I never saw Deep Purple as prog, Hard Rock not prog! I mean In Rock was pure hard rock! I didn't see really any prog there...

I like it, but it's not neatly prog, more like plain hard rock. Indeed one of their weakest albums.

See  my review: http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=91467 - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=91467

On my personal liking scale I'd give it a four.

Out of five of course. I quite like it, but from the Perfect Strangers-Battle Rages On it's my second least favorite album(BRO is very weakCry) The Morse era is better IMO.

I still idolize Ritchie, dispite what people say about Blackmore's Night...
I just always loved JLT's voice.

I would put it under "crap". You can see details in my review for this album (I have reviewed the Purple's entire catalogue (Albums & CD's; no DVD's yet). I still have to post my review for "Rapture Of The Deep" though and for a compil or two maybe.

You can call me a Purple maniac (I discovered them in December 1970 with Black Night/Speed King and saw them for the first time live in 1973 (March). Yes, I am quite old (born in 59).

But Slaves & Masters" is one of the very few studio album I have rated with one star (the other being the infamous "Abandon".

Cheers.

An awful and embarrasing album. I wish they never did it. Jon Lord really suffered in those days.

Well they did some concept albums like "Book Of Talyesin" and the "Concerto for group and Orchestra" at a time when prog had not definite shape nor form, so that's probably why they're on Proto-prog

EDIT: I previously said "Concerto for GUITAR and orchestra".. I was thinking of Yngwie Malsmsteen at the time

I didn't like that album very much. I like most of their earlier work though. I even like the stuff they did with David Coverdale and Tommy Bolin. But Slaves and Masters didn't really do a whole lot for me.
