Definitely the background dancers. DT wouldn't be DT without them.

I voted drums but a band can have as few or as many differnet instruments in it and still be good.

Depends entirely on what one's playing. Impossible to choose one instrument and call it the most important.

I voted drums but in reality its how well whatever instruments are used combine. Each instrument has its own atmosphere and attributes and to assign a preference to one negates the music as a whole. Look at all of the great prog bands- Floyd, Genesis, Yes, DT- they all display master musicianship in every field and function well together. For good guitar over everything, listen to hair metal. For good bass, listen to the majority of funk (P-Funk excluded).

Drums are most essential, but that's because I'm a drummer. Bass guitar is a very close second. Piano, keyboards (including synth, mellotron, moog, etc.), guitar, saxophone, flute and vocals are close behind though.

Drums are in charge of what the sound like. Even the heaviest riffs wouldn't feel heavy without the support of heavy drums... So i think drums are very important. but thats more of a generally important for rock music, not prog specificaly.
SYNTHS rule prog... Prog is based on lush keyboards, no matter what way you look at it... With the exception of a FEW prog metal bands (Tool, Opeth...) and Rush which also use synths here and there...
Synths are what bring the epic feel to prog. In some cases, the very existence, or the TYPE of keyboard is what differentiates some "Semi Prog", or "Prog Related" bands, from true Prog bands...

Good thread. I said bass cos I like the sound but then if the drumming is crap then it spoils the music for me. So should I have said drums???

You are so right! The mellotron was made for prog, and prog for the mellotron. The best prog songs incorporate that essential instrument in some way, shape or form...

What's the difference between a viola and a lawnmower?
You don't pour gasoline ON the lawnmower...
On a serious note, bass is the most important.

Figuratively speaking, drums are what makes a Word-document Excel(briliant wordplay, no? ).
Without drums, you have a white sheet with lots of numbers and letters scattered around, but when you add the drums, you have lines and frames around it all to put it into system!
I've no idea if this makes sense to anyone, but it (sort of) does to me. that being said, drums are 'nothing' if you don't have bass imo.

Basses are the rhytym for the guitar player, along with the drums. And it also adds complexity to the music.

What an odd idea for a thread... a band needs several instruments to really be a band, so it's pretty pointless to single out one as more important.
However, the omission of saxophone on this list is irritating, as I'd say a good 75% of my favourite bands use a lot of sax. If you add sax to the guitar/drums/bass/(possibly keyboards) setup then you've already got a prog band in the making in my opinion. No song is hindered by a good squonking sax solo.

I'd say every one of those instruments could be dismissed (not all of them) at any moment in a prog band
