hey guys. do any of you like Incubus? their new album drops in just over a week. you can hear a few tracks by clicking the banner below:

they're stunning live & the tour commences late January

i particularly like how each part of their music blends together. amazing guitar, bass lines, lyrics, scratching, consistent drumming, stunning vocals entwined in deep lyrical content.

I am totally psyched for this album Tongue strange cover though.....I wonder what direction they'll take after ACLOTM, hopefully getting back to being funkier (not likely, though I like all their output)

sorry Dead i don't. i lost interest in them several years ago when my friend was like "you have to listen to incubus' new album. it's so great and they've completely changed their sound." and then i listened to it and i thought i was listening to the first album again.

maybe i'd be willing to give them a shot again if they really did move on.

Their very first album is good.  Not great... but good.

The rest of their work is atrocious.

I've heard good things about them, but I haven't bothered to check them out.

I really like Incubus, and I'm very excited for the new album. Unfortunately, they've been somewhat on a decline lately. Here's how I'd rate their major releases:

Science - 9/10 (great, original, funk-rock)
Make Yourself - 9/10 (more commercial but still great)
Morning View - 7/10 (getting too commercial here and a little bland, but a lot of good songs anyway)
A Crow Left of the Murder - 5/10 (blah, this one seemed uninspired. Still has some good tracks though)

I'm a little nervous, 2 out of the 3 tracks previewed there were really just eeesh...SCIENCE was their best record, and hopefully this new album doesn't mark their full decline, but I'm in doubt...

you've left off Fungus Amongus, which is a truly great record as well.  judging by your list there i'd say you'd give it at least an 8/10.  Science is my favorite from them, and the song "Deep Inside" is pretty great.  I'm hoping the new album will be more like those crazy psychedelic-progish epic tracks they did for the Halo 2 soundtrack.  That stuff was pretty great.  I still definitely like the band, and ACLOTM had some pretty weak tracks, but also some really good ones.  they have a very original guitarist and I think Brandon Boyd is one of the best singers in rock.

Clap Don't wanna be dominating this thread but Fungus Amongus could almost be good as S.C.I.E.N.C.E....A Crow showed 2 possible directions though: experimental and new or bland and uninspired. Let's hope for the former

Yes I am hoping for the experimental route but it's highly unlikely. My prediction: a lame album with not many forward thinking ideas.

My ratings:
Fungus Amongus: 8/10
SCIENCE: 10/10 (one of my favorite albums of all time.)
Make Yourself: 6/10 (almost cried when it came out. It was so much more uninspired and thoughless than SCIENCE that I thought they were done.)
Morning View: 4/10 (way too commercial. This is the official sell-out album.)
A Crow Left of the Murder: 7/10. A nice step forward into more experimental sounding soft rock. Would still love to hear the bombastic funk but I'll settle for some psychedellic ideas.

P.S. The main reason Incubus formed was to push the boundaries of music. On SCIENCE, the label gave them freedom and they said "Let's make the weirdest album we can." And they pretty much did. Almost.

Than the old bassist (forgot his name) reminded them about their beginnings and their pledge to non-conformity. Supposidely he couldn't stand the commercial sound of Morning View and their direction so they kicked him out.

Many people think the more experimental sound on ACLOTM was to show the bassist that he was wrong and they weren't conforming. Than the Odyssey songs were supposidely a slap in the face for the bassist guy. Just thought I would tell that story.

i was blessed to be at their Sydney listening party last month & the album sounded stunning. it also got leaked a few days ago & sounds as beautiful as i heard at the preview party.

it's awesome they still have some love. i think they're really under-rated, but that's just my opinion. at times this new album has elements of their old albums, yet it's presented with a new, fresh spin on it. i guess it comes down to musical preference hey? each to their own.

thanks for your replies guys :)

PS: Fragile, i'm a big fan of Alex Katunich (Dirk Lance, the old bassist). the new bassist Ben Kenney is really amazing too. you should check out his solo stuff. just go to his myspace/benkenney. it's got a nice, unique feel to it. the latest album is "Maduro" & i like it.

i don't know if that's the truth about Dirk not wanting to sell out to commercialism. apparently he use to start of lot of trouble, so they chose to get rid of him after MV. if you watch the Morning View sessions he seemed comfortable to me & contributed a lot musically. refer to the behind the scenes footage when they're doing "11AM" & he suggests to span the pre-chorus. then again, we'll never know what went down. i think it's easier to just focus on where the band is at now. i still support them after 9 years of being a fan :)
